Capable cameras, poor mounts, hobbled w/paywall
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you actually got EVERYTHING these cameras are capable of doing for the purchase price alone, this package would be a really good value and pretty easy to recommend. However, as is becoming more common these days with DIY home security systems (Arlo is not alone in this shortcoming), virtually all significant features that would seem to be fundamental to providing more than simplistic after-the-fact video monitoring is locked behind a subscription paywall. Add to that an inexplicably dodgy network experience (at least for us), and severely limited mounting options, and you’ve got a recipe for a poor value for your dollar…unless you head into things prepared to add nearly 1/3 to 1/2 of the purchase price (depending on whether you got it on sale) every year just to access the features that may have attracted you to the security camera system in the first place. You’ll need to have the Arlo Secure app downloaded and ready to go before you begin. Unfortunately, because there are 24/7 emergency response options included in the paid subscription services (and in the one-month services trial), you are asked to provide a lot of very specific detail about yourself and your residence that may bother some who are concerned about yet another company wandering around with all their vitals. From there, the Arlo Secure app provides a host of colorful, full-motion setup screens that walk you through camera unpacking, installation, and network access. First-time setup for each camera took a while for me because each camera required an update that took maybe 12-15 minutes to complete. Physical installation would seem to be straightforward. Using two screws, you affix the backplate to your mounting surface, screw the mounting arm into the back of the camera, then slide the camera and attached mount into the plate. It is here where some design choices/flaws started to make themselves known. The mounting plate system would seem like a great idea to hide/secure the mounting screws underneath the camera, until you realize that the internal batteries are not removable. So, once you need a recharge, you have to force the camera mount off of the snap-together fitting on the backplate and bring the whole assembly over to a charger. I found this process to be nerve-rackingly difficult because of how much force was required to break the hold of the snap-lock tabs between the mounts. There is also no pivot or tilt in the mounts themselves, so you have to count on the mounting surface to be angled and oriented just how you want it or settle for whatever you get from the camera sticking out perpendicular to the wall and level with the ground. Granted, the FOV is pretty wide without substantial fisheye distortion, but to not even be able to angle the camera downward from a really high mounting point (like where would-be hooligans can’t yank or break the camera from its mount) feels like a significant obstacle to placement in some cases. Assuming you do get things mounted to your liking, the video performance of the cameras is actually quite stellar. 2K images and video feeds are clear and colorful and the included spotlight is shockingly effective at illuminating large swathes of real estate (traditional night vision is also available)—I’ve included 3 nighttime snaps from our second-floor deck down into the swimming pool area to give you a sense of what unassisted video vs night-vision vs LED floodlight images will get you. Motion detection sensitivity, custom detection zones, person detection features, image quality settings, etc. can all be customized in the app—but a rather significant feature like, oh…say…recording motion events to review at ANY time later, is a paid premium feature. This becomes significant for virtually any detected motion because you WILL get scads of motion notifications pushed to your phone (motion detection itself seemed to work VERY well), but if you happen to not be able to attend to your phone right then and there, you cannot call up the video feed for the indicated camera to see what triggered the alert unless the person, animal, event, etc. is still conveniently positioned directly in front of your camera’s field of view. I DO understand that security subscription services including cloud storage of event recordings are becoming the norm for DIY home systems like this, but to not even offer a paltry few GB of local storage severely cripples the usefulness of these cameras once you’re outside of the trail period and/or elect not to use the subscription services at all. At that point, the cameras feel less about security and more like an always-on livestream cam that happens to push-notify when something happens in front of the lens. Strangely, I didn’t get any push notifications from my iPhone to my paired Apple Watch as I have with some other similar home security products; this would at least have alerted me to grab my phone if it wasn’t within earshot for the alert, or already vibrating in my pocket to respond to a motion/security event. 2-way audio is available between the camera and the app even without subscription services, and it’s a nice feature to have on board. In practice, however, it was difficult to use even in a quiet environment as the speaker output on the camera is limited and the mic’s pickup distance seemed fairly short before audio quality took a nosedive. Even using them indoors for testing, my wife could barely hear me talking to her through the camera, and I could barely make out her replies even with my phone’s volume turned all the way up. Finally, I’m surprised that with the bump in video quality to 2K (and therefore increased bandwidth requirements for a video stream), Arlo elected to go with 2.4Ghz WiFi only. We live on a cul-de-sac without many neighbors, so the WiFi spectrum isn’t all that congested. I have two 3-channel AX-11000 and one 4-channel AX-16000 router in a mesh configuration that covers all three stories of our house and a good portion of our yard in all directions. However, it would easily take 10-to-30 seconds or more before a live camera stream would come up in the app…and one of them was a camera mounted above a doorway that was just 10 feet from the main house router. Still other times the cameras wouldn’t start a live feed and all and I’d just get the little white spinning wheel of hope in the middle of the last still image recorded until it was clear the connection just timed out. Suddenly the lack of local storage became even more problematic because such delayed video streams means that even with a near-instant push notification that motion was detected, I would be unable to see what the heck was going on without leveraging the premium subscription storage services. Even more frustrating was that even after I DID get some livestreams going, the snapshot and recording controls seemed sluggish with easily a 5-10 second or more delay before it was clear that recording had commenced, or an image was snapped and saved. Sadly, my overall experience with the Arlo Essential security cameras was a bit of a letdown—which was even more of a bummer given the stellar video performance. Granted, if I was willing to shell out for the premium services, I might feel a bit differently as some of those features could even offset a few of the connectivity and responsiveness issues we encountered. But based purely on what you get inside the box for the price you will pay at checkout, I can’t say as this camera package represents a very good value.

|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overview: Devices are easy to setup. Download arlo app, scan the bar code inside the box and keep adding camera one by one. Picture quality (2k video) seems to be good most of the time but sometimes it gets dark depending on the position of the sun and I am not talking about direct sunlight exposure. Cameras are in the shade (see pictures), day is bright but images sometimes seems to be lot darker than usually, why is that I have no idea. I must add that when added to app each camera did run firmware upgrade. Storage seems to be one month free storage included but after that you will need to purchase cloud storage, which is unusual since all previously owned Arlo products did came with one year free storage. Picture quality: 2k videos seems to be great most of the time, but as mentioned in my overview it gets darker periodically which is why am I taking one star away. Motions: Motion sensors are great on Arlo products. It allows you to set motions zones and separate motions per categories such as human, vehicles and others. No complaints there. Battery: Battery life will depend on your settings such as picture quality, motions detection and area of coverage. Overall I am satisfied with battery life. Sound: Sound recorder is awesome, gets good and clear recording. Connection: Periodically (and often) I do get "connecting" message which once it shows up would never go away unless I tap stop and try to reconnect again. Once I hit connect again, it would start working instantly. Storage: Not sure why but Arlo decided to lower included storage option from one year to one month trial Mount: Mounting bracket seems to be firm but limited on how much it could move to desidered posion. Compared to other Arlo products which comes with magnetic mount I must say this is disappointing. Also this "screw in" mount not very practical to remove the cameras for charging. Conclusion: Overall I must say that I am disappointed with this product. Pros: 2K video Wireless Motion alerts Battery life Sound Cons: Periodically (often) darker images Lots of "connecting" messages Only one month of storage included Mounting bracket angle limitations Mounting brackets impractical for quick removing Only one charging cord

Great battery life and good algorithms.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Our neighbor has been subject to petty theft. We have people walking through the neighborhood lifting car door handles and trying to steel stuff out of unlocked cars. Recently I had my catalytic converter stolen with an ETA of 6 months due to back stock... Super frustrating. I tried to mount an wireless camera from another name brand to the parkway tree but the battery life tanked in just 1 day of use. So I got tired of climbing up and down the ladder. So fast forward to Arlo Essential cameras. Setup. I ran through the the setup and firmware and I replaced the 2 cameras up in the tree with 2 arlos. I also placed 1 on the dash board of my car. Day vision is great. All 3. License plates are still hard to read unless it is really close up. Night vision with light use in the tree and inside the car behind the windshield is bad. The light hits the leaves in the tree and it over saturated the image. Same with inside the car. App was super easy to use. This requires a monthly or yearly subscription so no external storage allowed. Battery..... I have another competitor camera system that is battery and wired and it only lasts 1 days up in my tree with both camera locations. I was skeptical on the arlos but put it to the test. After dialing back the settings that was right for me and all I got 1 full week.... The amount of video and incidents it was was enormous so not bad.... App was super easy to use. The algorithm to detect vehicle, animal, person was pretty spot on. All together I am impressed with Arlo. Only 2 wishes. 1. Allow for local storage. 2. Wished the resolution was higher so I could pick up license plates Other than that. I would recommend this product for what it is advertised for. Side note I went ahead and bought the solar charger for this to help prolong the battery life so 8 don't have to keep climbing up and down a ladder to charge these cameras.

Easy setup, clear picture, even at night!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you’ve owned the Arlo line of security products, you’re probably used to needing a hub to setup your camera system. So, I was surprised to see that Arlo now offered an “Essential” camera which only required use of the Arlo App and your WiFi connection. In the box you’ll find the camera, a USB charging cable, a wall plate, and the screw on mount. Charging the battery was a simple as simple as uncovering the protective flap on the bottom and plugging it in. My camera took about an hour to charge before it was ready to go. To mount the camera, you’ll need to use a wall plate, which allows you to screw into the wall. It’s fairly straight-forward to install, and the manual does a good job explaining how to place it. The mount itself will require you to screw it into the camera using a Philips screwdriver, and then it essentially snaps into place with the wall plate. It’s important to note that the Essential camera can only be mounted from the rear of the camera, so keep this in mind when deciding on placement. In my case, I mounted this outside of my residence overlooking an area where I park my vehicles. The 2K resolution does offer more clarity than the standard Full HD cameras, and while not 4K, is very clear for objects that are closer to the camera. The camera can also illuminate it’s immediate area when used for night time playback or when capturing motion. While this does offer color night vision, I found that I often had to toggle off the built in spotlight to capture it clearly. The camera would then toggle it back on, leading to a basic night vision picture. I’m not sure if this was due to the environment, or just a default of the camera. The 130 degree field of view offers nice coverage area. The motion detection does a great job triggering the spotlight and starting a recording. You can also set up activity zones to set where the camera triggers motion alerts. There is built in 2 way audio, and does require the person to be a bit closer to the camera to hear you clearly if it’s a louder environment. However, the Emergency Siren (which can be set to trigger or enabled in the app) is LOUD, even waking me up in the middle of the night, since it’s right outside my window. There is almost no way this wouldn’t scare someone if they weren’t expecting it. Given this is their essential line of cameras, you won’t have much for local storage, so keep that in mind if you’re wanting an “all-in-one” solution without a subscription for some features. Overall, I was satisfied with the ease of set up and the clips it’s captured so far. The motion hasn’t skipped a beat, and does a good job ignoring smaller movements (like a bug flying by) compared to my previous Arlo camera. It’s also nice not being limited by a hub, but I do miss being able to store my recordings locally without it.

Superior video quality
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The images from these cameras are excellent! I have a total of seven cameras on my house, they pick up movement extremely well, they identify whether it is a person, vehicle, or animal. The zoom feature is great, you can read licenses plates, the night vision is crystal clear as well. Highly recommend! We do have fiber internet which might play into are wireless connectivity, which seems to run these cameras flawlessly.

||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I may need to still set mine up because the battery seems to be going down kinda fast. Its been about 3 weeks since ive installed in and its around 25 percent. But my camera also goes off all the time due to dogs running in and out of the house. You can set it up to only record during certain times of the day.

|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Arlo Essential outdoor wireless security camera. 2k second generation with color night vision. I love this camera the picture is crystal clear even when zooming in it stays pretty clear compared to my previous security cameras. I love that it's rechargeable don't have to worry about replacing batteries. It was quick and easy to mount once you download the app which you do need you can set it up to get notifications or you can turn it off, motion detector it also identifies if it's an animal or a person going past the camera. It also has a spot light & siren. The microphone speaker is load and clear typing can hear and be heard clearly. The color night vision is also very clear I really like that it has color night vision images are better identifiable then the traditional black and white night vision images. It was easy to connect to WiFi at first it would connect then disconnect or took a little time to load but after a couple hours it was fine and have had no issues with the wifi connection after that. I would highly recommend Arlo wireless camera. We've already gone out and purchased several more to secure all of our property and also got a couple for inside the house to keep an eye on our dogs while we are out.

Clear video with 4 cameras in the package
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Arlo Essential Outdoor 2K Security Camera 4 pack The cameras are the 2nd Generation Arlo 2K video resolution devices which operate wirelessly and on a rechargeable battery. Unfortunately, the battery is not replaceable and wondering why that was the design. Maybe for an adventurous owner the device is easily opened, and the battery is replaceable but officially it is not. From some usage time I learned that the camera's battery will last about a week or two on a charge if you set the built-in LED to light on movement. The Box indicates this packaging is a Best Buy Exclusive. The packaging of the 4 cameras in 1 box also includes a yard sign which says "Protected ARLO smart security". Arlo offers a subscription service which has the first 30 days free but still requires a credit card number to start the subscription. The camera mounting base that comes with it does not swivel, pan or tilt. It allows viewing from whatever surface it is attached on. This is a good packaging of 4 cameras; they deliver good imaging and will no doubt provide a level of video documentation if anything illegal happens and also deterring some potential illegal activity from happening both with the visible cameras and with the yard sign supplied in the package. This home camera works as an Amazon Alexa device, Google device, Apple HomeKit device and Samsung SmartThings device. Clear video – 2K video capability makes images very clear indeed, the night time vision is also pretty good. Fully weatherproof – Time will tell since I have not had Arlo cameras before but that is a good feature. You only get notified when something enters the zone selected for activation. At night the “spotlight” function is Ok but definitely not a powerful spotlight. It provides increased clarity on nighttime videos but will not work as a general-purpose spotlight for your property. Each camera has two-way audio which allows users to communicate to anyone within hearing range of the built in small speaker and microphone. There is also a “Siren” feature which sounds a louder tone to both announce that cameras are on the property and potentially scare away someone who won't expect to be under surveillance. To get the full capability from these cameras the paid monthly plan is required. There is not indication on the packaging this is the case. The basic plan starts at $5.00 per month. Using the Arlo app for smartphones, a user will be notified when the camera detects movement in the predefined zone of activity. The app allows setting the sensitivity and detection zones. By learning the app more of the useful capability of the cameras will be gained and the users will receive less in false notifications. I recommend this camera to anyone who wishes to increase their peace of mind for their home.

Excellent for low-traffic zones
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For most people, 2K resolution cameras are adequate for home security. In fact, most Ring doorbells (the gateway gadget into home security) are 1080p and below. These new Arlo cams are wireless and rechargeable, which means they’re great for mounting somewhere you don’t have existing power or to pay an electrician $1000+ to get a new circuit to the mounting location. If you already have a junction box or power in your desired location, I’d recommend going with a wired solution. But these are great for Arlo’s app is amazing. You can set it to alert you at specific times for motion and it seems reliable for detecting motion even though its battery-operated. Please note that without a subscription, none of the awesome features are available. All you’ll be able to do is get real time alerts and talk to people, but all the recordings and smart features are useless without paying monthly. Battery seems like it lasts a while; I live in a *very* quiet neighborhood but wouldn’t buy this set if I lived somewhere busy because the battery is not removable. You can either take the unit down and charge it or connect a long USB-c cable to it. Not ideal if you have it mounted somewhere super difficult to access. I use these near my windows so I can reach out for charging. Just some stuff to be aware of. Highly recommended!

Big Time Camera Security without the Big Time Cost
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Arlo Essential 1 Outdoor Wireless 2K Security Camera (Arlo Outdoor Wireless Camera) is exactly what I wanted and needed. It has provided a simplified solution to a concern that I have had for several years as it relates to securing my home when I’m away, as well as when I’m at home. Although I currently own a wired system with six cameras, it did not solve my issues I had with a few blind spots, including some sections that simply were out of view due to the limits of the system. However, that’s no longer an issue for me since I’ve installed this wireless camera. I’ve been using the Arlo Outdoor Wireless Camera for a little over a week now and I am extremely pleased with its’ performance. The Arlo Outdoor Wireless Camera arrived to my house very well packaged, secured in place, and there was no damage to the camera or any of the included parts. I unpacked the camera and all of its contents and read the included small pamphlet. There’s a nice welcoming sticker once you open the box containing the camera. I appreciate one of the first things I saw was plastic covering the camera clearly indicating the need to charge the camera before setup. There isn’t a detailed quick start guide, but a small pamphlet is provided with instructions on how to get you started. I used the QR code, contained within the small pamphlet, to download the Arlo Secure App and watched the helpful “how to” videos. I found that the Arlo Secure App instructions were more helpful, and can help you avoid the pain of shuffling through links on the website to find the camera’s setup instructions. Everything needed to get started is included in the box with the exception of the charging adapter (an indoor usb charging cable is provided) but I was able to use an adapter I previously owned. Make sure you use a 5volt charging adapter to extend the life of your battery. I say that with a point of emphasis because it took me a long time to find the proper charing voltage as the battery is preinstalled in the camera and cannot be removed. Although the camera comes partially charged, I had to charge it for several hours to get it to 100% and elected to allow it to charge overnight. It takes a long time to charge the battery, but the battery lasts a long time. Initially, I was having problems with my battery showing that it was fully charged and the percentage of the battery rapidly decreasing. I’m not sure what was going on, but after a couple days, I tried charing the battery again and it charged to 100% and more than a week has passed and only 10% of the battery has been used, and that’s with me testing all the features and creating more than a dozen alerts on top of the other dozen alerts from movement in my yard. I recommend reading and viewing the “how to” information available online. I spent a lot of unnecessary time checking the battery charging status only to discover (while reading online) that a blue light will be displayed when the battery is fully charged. Once the Camera’s battery was fully charged (indicated by the steady blue light on the camera), I followed the step-by-step setup instructions within the app to setup the camera via my cell phone. The setup was easy to follow along from beginning to end. It’s a quick read of the start-up guide and simple a few “how to videos” that are short and easy to understand. In fact, this may have been one of the easiest security cameras I’ve had to set up. It was easy to install and attach outside my home. I’m using outdoors in my backyard to have a clear view of my home. I was able to attach the included clip to a wooden pole in my yard in minutes and clipping the camera on the small clip was a breeze. It is very easy to attach and reattach between charging. Adjusting the camera for the perfect angle is also extremely easy. This is truly a do-it-yourself camera for just about anyone. The picture qualitly of live streams looks fantastic during the day and the color night vision provides me with all the detail that I need, and the video quality of the clips are crystal clear. The viewing angle is extremely wide. I am able to see my entire backyard, the back of the my house and all the windows and doors with no blind spots. During the night, I am able to take advance of the integrated spotlight to illuminate the entire area because things are pitch black. I have the ability to use the two-way audio when needed as well the integrated siren to scare off unwanted animals in my yard and unwanted visitors. The motion detection and identification of what the camera picks up works really good. I received alerts on my cell phone for animals as well as persons in my yard. There are many more features you can take advantage of if you elect to sign up for a paid total protection security plan, but this camera is fanatic even without the plan. The Arlo Essential 1 Outdoor camera comes with a short trial period so that you’re able to see all that the camera has to offer. The Arlo Secure App was recently updated so there are so many new features. Everything is well organized and easy to find. I highly recommend the Arlo Essential 1 Outdoor Wireless 2K Security Camera; chances are you will like it as much as I do.

Excellent Camera Works Perfeclty with Arlo Hub
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I found this camera to be solid in quality at a reasonable price. The documentation is fine, there are also online support pages available if you getconfused. You do need to ensure you know some fundamental things the first time you set up the camera. One point is there are subscription levels available but you don’t need a subscription, especially at first, as you try things out. Another important point is that the camera will not detect motion unless the system is armed to Home or Away. However, the camera can be used even in Standby Mode if you want to look at the live stream, but nothing is recorded. Finally the recordings go to the cloud which is best since you want them safe and accessible. I did already have the Arlo Secure app so I followed directions and added this 2nd generation Essential Outdoor Camera to the Arlo Hub. The options and settings are logical and intuitive. This Arlo security system is very simple to set up and works flawlessly. The camera light will only come on if the area is dark. This is a reasonable design point. The camera can be constant or flashing. When it is flashing it does not go completely off and then on; instead it goes high intensity and low intensity. I like this design point since its slow flash does not create a hectic on/off cycle. You can set the intensity level of the light as well. You can set up multiple zones or a single zone to cause the camera to record and you can vary the length of the recordings. Be sure to go through all the settings so you are familiar with the camera including 'Routines'. I found that this low price camera has a lot of options that enable you to set things up exactly as you might prefer – tip of the cap to the engineers at Arlo. The camera has specs in terms of night vision that included night color vision. The night videos were not super clear but just adequate. If you get confused doing your setup you can always reset things back to the factory level and start over. The way to do this is to attempt to pair the camera again using the convenient button on the top of the camera. I did connect using the 2.4 GHz WiFi which was required. I also found the mounting process with the included hardware to be really well thought out by Arlo which made it easy to mount the camera on any surface. The camera is rechargeable and this helps avoid any wiring to get your camera installed so it is completely wireless. The battery is rated to last 6 months, but I’m sure this will depend on usage. I expect the design point where the camera will not detect motion and record clips unless the system is armed is to help ensure a longer battery life, so that's a smart design. Lastly, I went to the support site and brought up the online version of the quick start manual I had received with the camera. The support site has very helpful troubleshooting information if needed – well done. I can certainly recommend this very well thought out security camera.

Peekaboo!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not too long ago, I purchased an Arlo Indoor/Outdoor camera to replace a different camera that was longer usable. Of course, I was and still am happy with that camera but then I found myself in need of another camera. I noticed that there was some strange activity going on in the backyard, under the fence. Something was trying to dig into the yard late at night. And since I couldn’t be watching that area at 2 am, I decided to use an Arlo Essential Camera. Setting Up: I cannot express how easy setting up the Arlo camera is. It’s pretty much ready out of the box. It comes with a wall mount, wall plate, screws, and an indoor charging cable. I place this Arlo up in an elevated corner of my medium-sized backyard. I secured this camera on a wood fence post, pointing it at the back alley that is flush with various plants. Whether you’re handy with tools or not, installing the wall mount is incredibly easy. Once the wall mount is placed, the Arlo camera can be maneuvered for your ideal zone of activity. Pairing the Arlo camera with the Wi-Fi is easy as well. It’s not overwhelming to those who might not be tech-savvy. Download the app, sync it with your camera and you are all set. Extra Set of Eyes: At any time, you can check the status of the camera or set it up to get notifications when there’s movement detected. The light on the camera will illuminate the area, allowing you to see what is going on. Even without the built-in light activated, the night vision provided through the camera is solid. My new Arlo alerted me when there was motion activity happening around 2:15 in the morning. It turned out that there was a pair of raccoons that were trying to get under the fence. I reinforced the bottom of the fence and the two critters have yet to come back. Variety of Uses: Whether you want a camera to monitor your backyard, or front door, or to watch over holiday decorations that you might have on the front lawn, having a camera keeping an eye on and recording the activities allows you to be prepared for whatever might happen.
