Customers are saying

Customers enjoy the RAD 480i Radar and Laser Detector for its reasonable price, user-friendly interface, and accurate detection capabilities. Many users have praised its long-range detection, which provides ample time to slow down and avoid potential speeding tickets. However, some users have experienced occasional false alerts and have noted that the device may not detect all radar sources.

Detects from an alright distance. By no means would I say it’s an extended range, especially compared to any other radar detectors I’ve used in the past. My main issue aside from the false alerts would have to be that it’s supposed to block out/eliminate blind spot mirrors and vehicle avoidance systems. This is not the case and quite the opposite in my experience. It’s been tested in a 2017 Honda Civic equipped with auto braking/lane keep assist and all I can say is I’m almost positive most of the false alerts I’m getting are from my car. Have a photo that I took from the app showing nearly 10 readings in a mile distance before arriving to my destination the other night. Will try in one of my other vehicles but as the Honda is the only vehicle I take on road trips this is upsetting. One of the main reasons I purchased this radar was to use on road trips in the Honda, which I believe is useless. Unfortunately, don’t suggest anyone spend hard earned money on this piece of garbage until they update firmware or figure something else out. Even if you don’t have a newer car changes are you’ll pass one when driving. Maybe you won’t continuously have the thing alerted you down the road but spend the extra money and get one that works.

I really do have mixed feelings about this radar. I have a RAD450 and honestly, it's one of the best radars that I have ever owned from Cobra. But this one this RAD480I gives off too many false alerts even with the sens on max. Sadly my RAD450 gave out although I can still order it from a different vendor, I'm not sure I would go back to this radar. Cobra IDK what you changed in the programming from the RAD450 to the RAD480 but in all honesty this new one sucks.

Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that you are not happy with RAD 480i. It detects radar better than the older RAD 450 which can result in more false alerts. To reduce these false alerts use Low or Medium SEN modes. If you use the iRadar app with RAD 480i (something not possible with RAD 450) then use Auto SEN mode which automatically switches the SEN mode based on your speed. cedarelectronics-cobra

Way too many false signals. There would only be 30 seconds of peace in between the constant false K and Ka alerts. This might be helpful on more suburban streets but on the highway it is pretty useless because of the amount of false signals and not giving alerts when highway patrol is sitting in the median doing nothing but watch people for speed. I get that they might not have been doing radar at the time of passing them, but if I pass 3 within a 5 mile stretch I don't think all 3 would not be using radar or lidar for speed. The only reason why I give this 2 stars is because the laser detector worked well and that is it. Also for anyone getting this for the app the app does nothing for controls for this device. In summary, this thing sucks and just use Waze.

Thank you for your valuable feedback. The RAD 480i is equipped with IVT Filter (In-Vehicle Technology Filter) that automatically minimizes false alerts caused by moving sources of in-vehicle technology, such as collision avoidance systems and adaptive cruise control. Additionally, it features adjustable sensitivity, which adjusts to driving environment, reducing false alarms from fixed position sources such as automatic door openers This helps reduce false alarms from stationary sources, such as automatic door openers. cedarelectronics-cobra

It is good when it's a true alert but there are a lot of false alerts that comes with it. I have an escort x80 in a different car and passing by the same road this cobra is a bit jumpy. On the bright side the volt meter is on the spot for me. I wish I can return/replace it.

I bought this radar detector to replace an older one that I had for about 8 years that finally died. I had a chance to try this detector out on a 6 hour round trip drive between PA and NY. The detector did pick up numerous K band signals (I didn't bother to use X band), all of which turned out to be false alarms. The problem is that many newer cars have proximity sensors which constantly trigger the radar detector and make it impossible to detect police radars. So, I returned it and will be relying on Waze for police information.

As far as functionality goes, this is exactly what you get. It's able to pick up the main bandwidths and laser, and with your phone, has gps lockouts and community radar reports. Except it's gotta be able to connect to your phone, and stay connected even. Every time I drove I had to wait up to 5 minutes before it finally connected, and that was manually searching for it within the app. Even then, I e often just had to drive without the GPS lockout or community features since it just refused to connect.

Just not sure if you have any idea of technology compared to the technology needed to detect your radars signals and I just don't have any hope of the basics like that back in the days. Cobra service series surprises me except for the prices. My personal preference not for everyone!
