    Nice upgrade from 1080P

I currently have 2 1080P Eufy wi-fi security cameras that I have used for over a year as well as an Eufy Smart wi-fi 2k video doorbell for 18 months – and while all have worked well, they required a base to store the videos and their batteries needed charging at some point. So, I was excited to get a chance to check out this new solar unit with built in storage. I wasn’t disappointed as it was easy to setup and relatively easy to install. If you are new to security cameras and/or want a compact all-in-one unit not requiring a base – I would recommend this unit. Nicely packaged and comes with; Security Camera (seemed kind of shaped like a cow bell to me) with 8GB eMMC memory (not expandable) and 600 Lumens spotlight. Also has an onboard 13400mAh battery. It also meets IP67 standard - yeah that didn’t mean anything to me either so looked it up and it deals with how watertight, heat resistant, etc. a unit is. Also has 90dB siren (which I did not test). 3-foot 6-inch USB-C charging cable (to be used for initial charge which took several hours) No AC brick/adapter to plug charging cable into. This seems the case with many manufacturers now, I guess they assume everyone has several lying around. Which is certainly the case with me – they are everywhere in my house. Cone shaped camera mount including screws and wall inserts to secure screws. Quick Start Guide 24/7 Monitoring Security Warning stickers Positives; Was very easy to un-pack and setup following nicely detailed instructions. But before I did anything though I charged the unit which took several hours. I already had Eufy app installed so I just chose the add a device option, selected the SoloCam from the list of products provided and it walked me through synching and installation. It uses 2.4 Ghz band to connect to wi-fi so I made sure my phone was using that band before adding unit. Once added thru the app it will walk you thru installation options as well as do’s and don’ts. Also once connected you can access the camera through app regardless of wi-fi or cellular connection and can be done remotely from anywhere. Once added there are multiple settings, etc. you have access to. Since I have other devices, I was able to re-order the way they showed up in the app home screen. You can also choose whether there is a water mark, date/time or both or none on your recordings as well as rename the camera. Set-up how you receive alerts, set whether spotlight comes on and how bright, night vision, motion detection sensitivity, power manger, video quality, storage, wi-fi connection, there is a mounting guide, about device and option to restart or remove device. After installation you will want to check Power manager to ensure that the solar panel is working and getting enough sun to function. You can run on battery and documentation states you can do so for up 4 months – but why pay for solar and not use it? Deciding placement of the camera was more difficult than I expected. The new unit is maybe 3 times larger than my old 1080P and maybe twice as heavy. I couldn’t just put it where my 1080P camera was as would not get enough sun to function and the camera mount is larger too, so screw holes don’t match. With that in mind I decided to mount camera on my patio overhang ensuring that some of the mounting holes/screws went directly into the wood structure under my stucco - as I didn’t want it falling off. Setting angle of camera. etc. is easy as you just tighten the camera mount once it’s in place. The camera is connected using AES 128 -bit encryption. Camera is only about 12 feet and one wall away from my satellite mesh unit so wi-fi signal is very strong and I have no problem streaming/viewing 2K video. Day and Night motion and sound detection are extremely good with very little lag time starting recording. You can set the detection level as well as recording all movement or only humans – it uses its built in AI to decide. I have it set to all, but I had to set the detection level down a couple of notches as sound set it off as did moving tree branches. You have option to view live. It provides accurate and fast recording with 2K resolution being very good with nice color. Doesn’t get nearly as grainy when zooming in as my 1080P did. Field of view is great and records in color at night when you have the flood light option on. But I use infrared only so have spotlight turned off – I only used once for this review. 2-way audio is available also - you can also speak through the camera speaker which again I only tried once and its reasonably clear - would have been good to scare trick or treaters though I think! It is very easy to download an event onto your phone if you want to save it. Can be used with Alexa or Google but I didn’t try either. 1-year limited warranty. Negatives; Can’t add/upgrade memory. It would be pretty much perfect if you could upgrade but having access to memory/battery probably would compromise the weather sealing/rating. Worry about elements affecting camera over time. I live in desert so snow and even rain really aren’t an issue – it’s the heat. I had problems with doorbell overheating in the summer and shutting down. Had to move to more shaded side of doorway. This camera will get morning sun so hopefully it won’t overheat. There is no computer application to work with Windows, etc. So, you must use android or apple to access. Since I already had the base, it would be nice to have option to use its storage. If camera is stolen, you won’t have any record as memory will be gone with the camera. To help avoid this I installed camera so that a ladder is needed to access it. I guess an argument could be made that base could be taken if home broken into. Overall, very nice and recommend. Just make sure you go through all the options in the app so you can fine tune to your liking.

[Pro: Video quality is clear.] Although 1080p uses less space when recording events, I much rather have better quality clips. The 1440p/2K video is very crisp, and this spotlight camera captures details that would be very important if an unfortunate situation were to occur. [Pro: Motion Detection and notifications are quick.] The S40 cam has very fast response times when detecting motion and sending alerts. Although I have the camera placed in a low traffic area, I knew quickly when activity was happening in my yard. Furthermore, I didn’t have any false positives which is a major plus. [Pro: Bright cameras help for great night vision] Night vision is adequate without the light, but the spotlight creates great recordings. Because the camera is big and sturdy, it has a larger light than most outdoor security cameras. [Pro: Battery life is great.] Battery life is good, but even better for those low traffic areas that still might need the presence of security. [Con: Solar panel placement is awkward.] The only major drawback for this camera is that the mount might not help it stick out far enough to catch a lot of sun. You might need utilize an external solar panel with a USB C connection unless you don’t mind unscrewing the camera from the mount to charge it up. [Con: Storage is not removeable] 8GB is enough space to record clips over multiple months. However, I prefer to be able to expand that video storage and to transfer the card physically to my computer. This is not a major issue, but more of a preference. Overall, the Solar Powered Eufy Spotlight Camera is not perfect, but very excellent in the things that it can do. It performs in a manner in which it meets all of my security needs.

The battery on the camera last for a long time. It does not record 24/7, it only records when motion has been detected. Notifications to the phone are inmediatly. Great quality for a security camera.

I got the eufy spotlight camera to mount next to the garage to watch over the driveway. I previously had another camera mounted there but wanted something with a spotlight also. My previous camera wasn't solar-powered and in its first location (watching the front porch), the battery lasted about 6 months before needing a charge. However, moving it to such a high traffic spot caused it to constantly record and need to be charged monthly. A huge plus for the eufy spotlight camera is that it is solar-powered. I fully charged it inside using the USB-C cable before installation. After installation, it rained for two days. As soon as the sun came out it started charging. I will note that the sun wasn't even directly hitting and it was already charging. I checked it again tonight and the battery is still at 100%. You can see in the app that it is charging. Another pro is that you can set it to only alert you for humans, instead of animals. I can back my car out of the garage and leave and it doesn't record it. For me, that's exactly what I want. There's no point in having tons of stored videos of cars coming and going. However, as soon as you walk through its path it will record. As far as the spotlight, it is very bright. Something that I didn't realize when I got it was that the light is customizable. You can go from brightness 1-100. You can also change the color temperature from warm (more yellow) to cool (white light). For brightness, I use the cool setting at 100% (600 lumens). There are two options for night vision. You can have black and white using the IR LEDs, which looks good, but a little grainy. The second option is for color night vision. This option turns on the spotlight when motion is detected. I used the IR lights for a couple of nights and then the spotlight. I prefer the spotlight option as you get better image quality and a light if you need to go out at night. You can also use the built-in microphone to talk through it. I tested this and the quality was clear and loud. So far I have 100 events recorded and it has used 376MB out of 7.3GB of the internal storage. You can download recordings from the app and erase the ones you don't need. You can prioritize between optimal battery life, optimal surveillance, or customize between the two. You can also set activity zones to monitor. The eufy spotlight cam gives you two. Every other camera that I have had only gives you one. This is perfect for me since the camera is facing a road. I simply set the activity zone below the line of the road so that people walking down the road won't trigger it. When it captures a video, it also takes a screenshot of the best picture of the person's face. Just below the recording, you will see the face of the person that it recorded. Click that and you have the best still shot of that person. That's a nice feature. If you're watching it live, there is also a siren button. It works well and is quite loud. Overall, there has been very little lag between an event triggering and me getting the notification. For example, my eufy doorbell cam notifies me after the UPS guy is halfway back to his truck after hitting the doorbell. The spotlight cam is nearly instant. There are a couple of drawbacks to the eufy spotlight cam for me. First, it is designed to be on the 2.4GHz frequency of your WiFi. Since I have both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands coming from the router, the eufy spotlight cam wouldn't connect to my WiFi. I had to create a separate guest network that was only running the 2.4GHz band to connect the spotlight cam to. I didn't have to do this with my eufy doorbell camera. It connected automatically with no issue. Another huge issue (and they tell you this in the setup guide) is that people walking directly towards the camera may not be seen. They need to cross the path of the camera for it to realize they are there and record. It has a big blind spot directly ahead of it. I tested this by walking straight at the camera from outside the activity zone. It didn't realize that I was a person that it should be recording until I was just a few feet from it. Basically, once someone figures out this flaw, they can easily defeat it and it becomes useless. They could just slowly walk directly towards it, duck down below it and it wouldn't capture anything. That's a big oversight for something that is supposed to be a security camera. Overall, however, it is a great spotlight camera that you (in theory) never have to charge.

Not my first camera, so I think I have some perspective. This camera offers many benefits and one minor issue, which is common among most external cameras. The image equality is excellent, both in the daylight and at night. Recording starts almost immediately when the moving object or person appears in the field of view. Notifications from the app are almost instant once an event is being recorded. There is a whole bunch of options regarding the quality of the video. Within the app you can add multiple camera activity zones or areas where the movement should be tracked. Regarding the solar battery I have the camera placed in a location that receives about 8 hour of direct sun, my charge has been consistently reported as 100%. The build is sturdy and looks quality. My experience with Eufy cameras has been better than with other manufacturers, who I also acquired over the years. I chose this camera because I did like how the Eufy app works. Everything is easily accessible and there is no wait if you want to access either the recording or the live view. The only gripe I have is the mount that is unsecured. What I mean by that is that anyone can grab the camera and easily remove it from the mount. But this is not unique to Eufy, all other cameras I had a chance to look had the same issue. Overall I am happy with my choice, would definitely recommend it.
