Its ok. I had trouble getting it started and connected.I had to call h.p. it wasnt registering the cartiridge for some reason. Wish the screen had lighted letters not black. Buttons dont light unless u prompt it to print. If something isnt working it dont clearly display reason. It gives u symbols. Everytime i turn printer on it will suck in my 1st page to calibrate it wasting paper and ink. Shouldnt have to calibrate each time you turn it on. Note: not 2 sided printer! Printer should cost less for these reasons. But prints come out really clear and good.

The HP is a no frills, compact, all-in-one printer made from 45% recycled plastic. The Ink Tank and Ink Bottle design allows for quick, mess free refilling process when needed. Although it seems like a good design from face value, I quickly learned there are several drawbacks or limitations due to the design itself. For home or infrequent use, this might be acceptable but for office or frequent use this might not be the best choice. In the Box: - HP Smart Tank 5101 All-in-One Printer - Original HP 32XL 135-ml Black Ink Bottle - Original HP 31 Cyan Ink Bottle - Original HP 31 Magenta Ink Bottle - Original HP 31 Yellow Ink Bottle - HP Smart Tank Printhead - Manual, Setup Guide, Warranty Info - Power Cord Setup: At first I was a little thrown back by the setup process of this printer. It requires un-packaging, installing the print heads, and filling the ink tanks in addition to traditional setup of powering the unit on and setting up the software. Quickly I realized this isn’t a daunting task and it went by fairly quickly although I would set aside 30 minutes to do this. I really praise HP for the software setup as this can be done from the HP app on your smartphone or PC. I already had the software on my PC but chose to use the mobile app for this unit. It was very easy and everything went smoothly. Once it was connected to my Wi-Fi, I was able to control many aspects of the printer which I have never used before in such a fashion. The physical setup of installing the print heads and filling the ink tanks wasn’t bad either but it did require reading the directions to avoid any missteps. HP first tells you to install the ink. Basically open the bottle, turn it upside down, and snap it onto the correct tank filler. This truly is a no mess design as long as you let the tank fill before removing the bottle. You should have a little black left and the tanks require all the color ink provided. Installing the print heads was a little different but essentially you unlock the holder, pull a shipping piece out (CAREFUL! There is a splash of ink on it) and snap the two heads into place. It was not difficult but I had never done this before so it was new to me. The paper tray… well let’s just say it’s there. Usage: So after using the printer after a few days I have come to dislike more of the physical design vs the performance of the unit itself. The paper tray doesn’t hold a ton of paper so you’ll be refilling it often. At least it is out in the open, right? The 1x1” monochromtic display is incredibly hard to read and is not backlit. Not to mention it is so small that you really need to memorize the icons and lights on the buttons to know what it going on. The printer does have a few physical buttons which are nice but again it is hard to know what exactly is going on. If you control the unit from your computer or app, it makes it much more intuitive and easy to use. Luckily, this printer integrates well on the software side otherwise this could be a disaster. The physical printing speed and quality is good and what you should expect from a new printer of this price and size. I would say it might be a little slower than my previous unit. The images come out clean and clear both print and digital. There is no automatic document feeder so any 2 sided documents or several pages in a row will need to be manually placed onto the scanner. This is not something I used often but my last compact printer had this function so it’s a worthy note. This also does not do duplex printing which is one area I used often. Given this is a manual process it really is a downside. Overall: This HP printer does everything it should as an all-in-one design. It prints, scans, copies, and more but with some complexity that shouldn’t be required. The smart tank design is very neat and works well for refilling the tanks. It should be more cost effective over time but the main concern would be the print heads staying unclogged in occasional use but that does for every ink jet printer. The lack of a paper tray, duplex printing, and easy to use screen are the biggest shortcomings I would like to see. As a whole, I would strongly consider what you want in a printer and whether this model fits your needs. I am sure HP has other models that might work better if this one is missing something you want/need. Pros: - Made from recycled plastics - Compact(ish) Design - Ink Tank (Refillable) - Setup/Software - Print Quality Cons: - Lack of Paper Tray - Small Screen - No Duplex Printing/Paper Feeder - Shorter Power Cord, Plugs in Backside (5 Feet?)

HP Smart Tank 5101 is a good printer once it’s set up correctly. I’ve personally had some issues with getting this product to work properly. I’ll explain later but as far as being a good printer it does its job with standard features. The printer isn’t that bad with the design carrying over a modern look. The instructions have you set everything up including squeezing the ink into the printer. This was an easy part of the setup and placing the ink cartridges inside. Thanks to me starting to get complicated win the app became involved. Setting this up has been a pain for me due to no indication in the app when setup is properly done or looking for Wifi. It has had many issues. I have seen many “E3” errors on this device because I feel the method of setup is a little dated. There is no way to know if the app/printer is in the progress of setup. Spent two days trying to figure out how to fix this error with the HP app hanging. Wifi wouldn’t print with my phone. Then spontaneously, there was no more error and it started to work. Print out the test page and it just was fine. I was able to print and scan it. It’s been a strange two days but I was satisfied once everything was set up. It’s a good printer, but I personally suggest something that gives you a visual indication (screen on a printer) of the setup. This is no gripe against the HP Smart Tank 5101. Again once everything is set up to work it does its job just fine. Overall, if you just need something to print and do the job this is a good device. You can also fax with HP service. Printing documents and pages were quick and clear. Using the HP app allows you to change the sizes of pictures and edit them to print perfectly. This one would be a harder recommendation to family and friends just based on my own experience. It is a reliable printer when you need something printed out but the wifi issues I was having left a sour experience.

Printing and scanning is great with this unit when it actually works. Used it for several months connected to Wi-Fi. It had so many problems with connectivity. Would stop working on just about every other print job. I would have to unplug it and plug it back in for it to reconnect. The problem is not with my Wi-Fi. I have excellent fiber optic Wi-Fi at the top of the line router. The printer does work much better using a wire between the printer and the computer. But it still has issues. About one out of every 10 print jobs it just freezes up and has to be unplugged and plugged back in again. It is great having the large capacity ink tanks.

Thus printer prints well and fairly quickly but I rated it a 3 because I have to prompt it several times to print before it actually does and i have to clear the machine after every job. It doesn't automatically go to the next job. It appears as though their is an error which is annoying and time consuming. I would have returned but I waited too long now.

The print quality is amazing in both color and black and white. The ink tank holds a lot of ink and lasts much longer than cartridges. The biggest con is that it only prints one sided. This printer also lacks the ability to scan and copy multiple pages without lifting the cover and replacing the page. This makes it very difficult to copy/scan multiple pages quickly. Do your research before buying to make sure this printer will fit your needs. I would love to return it and get one with a top scanner.

I like the fact it came with a plentiful supply of ink. Easy to set up, easy to print from phone, or computer. When scanning something, it is a little slower than my previous printer, honestly sounds a little junky. I hate the fact that I must sit in the room with it if I'm printing off a bunch of pages. The feeding system is terrible. I have tried several different types of paper, and same issue with all of them. This printer does not do front, and back copies at the same time. For the price, it is honestly just an average printer.

It takes a while for the printer to warm up and orint out. No buttons on my printer has to work from phone if you want scan, fax etc options. Also feeding one page at a time is annoying.

We bought this printer as we have 2 HP desktops and 1 HP laptop computer. Really have been pleased with those products. The printer is not of the same quality. It was difficult to set up - never had to load my own printer heads before!! The quality of printing is excellent, but the machine is so very noisy and so very slow to get the job done. Think it was rather pricey for the quality.

Print quality is good. Symbols are used for the limited print options; would prefer text guidance rather than guessing what symbols to select. Did not realize I cannot do two-sided printing. Sometimes I have to unplug power as print project will not print until I replug the printer in.

I,ve had problems from the start. Nothing big, but a frustrating setup. I got it working with the help of HP. Worked great for a few months now the ink jets need replaced. Its only a year old. Im checking to see if they are covered in warranty. When it works im getting a nice clear copy.
