The fatal focus flaw in the Logitech c920

I love my Logitech c310 720p webcam but wanted to move up to a 1080p model. The c920 has generally great reviews but I immediately encountered a problem that was a deal breaker -- the focus is unreliable. The two photos here that were taken back-to-back demonstrate how it can auto-focus sharply on something that fills the frame but goes soft when the are other things in the frame that are further away. And when you use the Logitech software to attempt manual focus you find that it's still blurry at its closest focus (?) Try Googling "Logitech c920 focus problems" (which I wish I'd done before buying it) and you'll find videos from owners who've tried everything from attaching other lenses atop the webcam lens or even disassembling the webcam to rotate the lens to correct this. Some even had several c920's and not all of them have this problem. I'm always up for a DIY fix but it wasn't worth the trouble and the risk that it would still have focus problems and have voided the warranty. You shouldn't have to McGyver a brand new $100 webcam so that it "might" keep you in focus. This one's going back and my search continues for an affordable 1080p webcam with a good quality image.

      Hello Bobcbold,
I am sorry that you have had trouble with the autofocus on your c920s Webcam, I would like to help. I recommend checking that the operating system is up-to-date, drivers, and camera/webcam adjustments should be adjusted accordingly within the app, and for best experience, I highly recommend using the Logitech “G-Hub” or “Capture” software. Please always feel welcome to visit the Logitech website for product support. I will further elaborate on my recommendations…
Various Apps and Operating systems are periodically updated as are the Logitech “Capture” and “G-Hub” programs. These are my suggestions based on current variables, to address the issues that you described, with consideration to the unknown variables. These suggestions should cover those concerns as well as other details, as I am unsure of some specifics in your setup:
-Please check that Windows is up to date, also please check your “Device manager” for driver updates. In the “Device Manager” please check the pull-down menu under “Imaging Devices”, please right click on the “c920s” option and check for driver updates. If there are updates please run them, if you see “The best drivers for your device are already installed” please select “search for updated drivers on Windows update”. On the “Windows Update” screen, you may see a “You’re up-to-date”, message (you may see an option to “view optional updates”. If you see this option, please select “view optional updates”, where you will find the optional updates in a pull-down menu. If you do not see this option, please select “check for updates”. This likely will reveal the “view optional updates” option. This is based on what I experienced after a recent system update, and these steps resolved the issue that I had experienced. This should improve your experience, but I also recommend utilizing the Logitech software for custom adjustments.
Some programs that work with webcams have built in adjustment options. I am not sure specifically which programs you are running, so I am giving a broad solution which should cover the issue you have described. Please provide adequate lighting on the subject for best results. A backdrop will provide the best results but is not necessary. Many programs offer background replacement, even without a backdrop. The program that the webcam is being used with will likely feature different options to consider in the overall setup. (I am unsure of what program you are using, so I cannot make any specific suggestions on those variables).
-The c920s webcam is supported by Logitech “Capture” and Logitech “G-Hub”. Both programs have an option for backing up the settings, and both have focus adjustments as well as other customizations. I think G-Hub will be best for what you are describing. If you use “Capture”, please adjust the settings in Capture and select the webcam device input as “Capture”.
-With G-Hub, you can make adjustments and see the video through the G Hub software. (If using an App that uses the webcam, you will not see video on the G Hub software as the App will be using the webcam, but the adjustments will be visible on the App’s image display as you make the adjustments through G Hub. If you launch the App while G Hub is open, you will want to close and reopen G Hub so that the App can take control off the webcam’s image). If you select the image of the c920s webcam, you will see the camera/webcam adjustments. Under Camera mode and Video mode, you will want to “add a new camera/video mode to make custom adjustments. You can do this each time you launch the software that you are using, or you can set these settings to launch with a specific app. For example, I have my “G Hub” settings set to launch my webcam settings when I launch an app that uses webcam. (You can right click the app and find the location when manually adding an app if you do not see it as an option after scanning). To set this customization you will want to select the “active profile” pull down on the main screen of G Hub, and you can customize the webcam and other settings specific to certain apps if you want the settings to be remembered and preset for that app.
I hope these suggestions were clear and that this will help you to achieve the settings and performance that you are looking for. I hope you enjoy your c920s webcam, and please feel welcome to visit the Logitech website for further support for any of your Logitech products. I have attached the link to the support page for the c920s webcam; the “G-Hub” and Capture” software are available in the downloads tab.

Absolutely trash. AVOID THIS. Within 1 month and 3 times of me using the camera, it has a line going through the entire video/ picture. Read the negative comments and go with another brand. Also yes, I have tested this on multiple computers and used the G Hub, the camera is defective.

I've used this webcam for 1.5 years working remotely and this week, it started malfunctioning. The image freezes, fades, and morphs. If I turn off the camera and on again, it will appear to work for 2-3 seconds and then will freeze and turn strange colors. I've tried using different ports and plugging in and out and restarting and nothing is working.

The camera and my computer (a 5-yo Lenovo operating on Windows 10) simply could not communicate. I tried for hours to set it up for Zoom meetings, and it just would not happen. Also, I couldn't locate any software that would have allowed me to change the settings, so I was stuck with default settings. The puny info that is send with the camera is absolutely no help at all. THEN, when I went to return it, Best Buy wouldn't let me return it via online shipping label, in spite of what their sales page says. I had to drive half an hour and wait in line to get a refund. Not happy.

Hi MaryAnn, sorry to see you're having some software related issues with your C920s webcam. The webcams are designed to be plug and play but sometimes you have to tell the app you're using the webcam with (Zoom in your case), to switch from the default camera to the webcam. Hopefully that helps clear some confusion.

Eight months after buying this webcam, Logitech Capture software still doesn't support M1 macs. The software was part of the reason we bought the webcam, and for it not to support M1 macs many months after they were introduced shows logitechs lack of customer support/care. The camera does work with quicktime, and some 3rd party software, but you shouldn't have to pay extra when software is part of the package. SHAME ON LOGITECH SELLING A WEBCAM W/SOFTWARE BUT THE SOFTWARE DOESN'T WORK!

We are working on compatibility, but until then we have found that Streamlabs OBS can give you a lot of the same features as Capture. It is also a free download if you search for it.

Look up focus and setting issues online first

Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed.
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

1 star rating due to several factors all of which can be confirmed via a quick search on YouTube. The camera will not focus on the foreground (you), you cannot save custom settings at all, and all fixes to issues or inconveniences are via third party solutions or opening your camera up. These complaints are not from someone unexperienced with cameras or technology either. I assumed some of the 1 stars were from inexperienced users but that's definitely not the case. If anything, it may he the other way around (lack of recognition that the camera does not focus well on the foreground). It's focus field wants to start beyond you (aka focuses on the background). You cannot adjust the focus, zoom in, etc. The fixes are to take it apart and turn the lens a quarter ot to buy third party lens corrections. Loook up focus issues online to verify that its a very common complaint with no decent solution. I'm assuming from the overwhelming positive reviews that people don't realize they're not really in focus or they didn't mind taking it apart to fix it. Custom settings have to be set in their program you download, you have to have the program open in order to use those settings, and you cannot save those settings (they're gone once you exit the program). You can't create a preset and have it work while running your game, stream, meeting, etc. unless the program is open and you have to reset it each time. These issues are extremely common and easy to fix. This webcam is very inconvenient and there's really no excuse to not have more control over settings or having the basic ability to save settings. I returned this needless to say. Best of luck in your search! I hope this has helped.

Hello Kelbelle! Sorry to hear you're having issues with the focus on your C920S HD Webcam. By default, the C920S camera will use autofocus, and should normally adjust smoothly and precisely for consistent definition and fluid video of the subject in front of the camera. This all depends on the background you're using, if anything is moving around you, and how far the objects in the back are. To make manual adjustments, we do offer our free Logitech Capture software to help correct many elements to your desire, and then simply use this camera view within any conferencing software you'd like to use (Skype, Zoom, Teams, etc.). Logitech Capture can be downloaded here: https://support.logi.com/hc/en-us/articles/360024695174--Downloads-C920s-HD-Pro-Webcam. - Mathieu from Logitech

Logitech C920 Won't Work With Big Sur 11.2.3

Three months ago I purchased a Logitech C920S HD Webcam for our new macbook air. I would now like to take this opportunity to say it's a very nice camera, unless you decide to update your new computer to Big Sur 11.2.3. After we did the update, the macbook would not recognize the C920 anymore. I called Logitech and after several days of the run around one of their service agents told me they had a C920/Big Sur camera issue they could not fix. During the span of the last few weeks, Logitech told me I need to downgrade the Mac operating system so the camera would work, because they don't have a clue as to when they can fix this issue. So I strongly suggest you resist buying any Logitech product after our experience with their custer service

It is true that when the operating system was upgraded it changed the required drivers/firmware needed for Logitech peripherals to be used. Logitech was caught off guard with this and was a learning curve. Currently, a fix is still in the works. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. I'm glad that during the time you were able to use the C920 that you enjoyed your experience. Thanks for being a Logitech customer. Kristi from Logitech.

Yesterday it just started turning tan and no one in zoom could make our image out. Logitech are you serious you are charging this much for a complete piece of garbage??? Hello, I'm sorry to hear that you've been having some issues with your C920S webcam. The issue you're describing is probably caused by the lighting in the room you're in, so I would first recommend moving the camera to a different location or at a different angle to possibly mitigate this issue. In addition, if you haven't done so already, feel free to download our Logitech Capture software, which should give you more tools to manually effect the video quality.

I didn't need this webcam enough to pay more than it was worth to someone who thinks it is a good idea to take advantage of others during a crisis. I was waiting till I could get it directly from Logitech or from an honest retailer. But my husband wanted to get me something for Christmas that was on my list and so surprised me by paying much more for this than it was worth. Profiteers are inherently dishonest and willing to cheat others, so it is no surprise that even though my husband paid a premium for a new product, this one was obviously used. I had already educated him on how to spot shady dealers on Amazon, so he thought if he bought this on Best Buy he was safe. He thought the price he was paying was the normal price. He was so sad about it that I pretended it was ok and we didn't need to send it back so he would have a happy Christmas memory of surprising me with something I want. He now knows to never buy any technology component without my input. He now knows that besides not trusting Amazon sellers he also cannot trust Best Buy. The one star is given to Best Buy for this educational experience. I give no other stars for the camera as I was not given a new one so any evaluation I have is inaccurate. If you want to know how this model of camera functions go to a tech forum you trust. If you want to buy it look on the Logitech website to see what the price is supposed to be and then purchase it from them or someone else with a similar price.

Hello, So sorry to hear about your experience with purchasing the C920s HD Webcam and it not being new. You have until the 15th of this month to exchange this product and I'm 100% certain that Best Buy will work with you to rectify this situation, especially if you go in store---showing your receipt or online invoice. Looking at Best Buy's website now and seeing the listing for the C920s, it is available for purchase and they even list other retailers that have it priced lower than what they are asking. It is listed higher than what Logitech offers on it's website, but they are sold out and there isn't a waiting list. Again, very sorry to hear about your experience and hope that you're able to get it rectified soon because the C920s is an amazing webcam. Best Regards, Richard from Logitech

Hi, we're sorry to see you're experiencing some compatibility related issues with your C920S HD Webcam. If you haven't already, please unplug and plug in the USB cord to your webcam. Then restart your computer. It's possible that all the drivers didn't download properly. Sometimes the computer doesn't start using the webcam automatically. So, you will have to edit he video/audio input/output settings on the app you're using the webcam with, in order for it to work properly.
