Unit Does Not Pass Through 4k @ 120hz
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First of all: lots of positives with this unit. Good sound quality, a pretty full suite of features for a reasonably priced unit (especially if purchased on sale or open box), etc. It really pains me to have to leave a bad review, but there were a few too many negatives to ignore: 1. This unit WOULD NOT under any circumstances pass 4k @ 120hz. I tried 3-4 different monitors/TVs, 3-4 different HDMI cables, and spent hours poring over the instruction manual and google searches. I've probably tried over 50 unique configurations of the above for testing. I even spent over an hour on the phone with an Onkyo support who admitted that I had done everything right, and could eventually offer more than trying some debug mode you can enter that ultimately did not solve the problem. We ended the conversation with him repeating "well it's not guaranteed to work with all equipment configurations, so Onkyo isn't going to process an exchange or any similar remedy because it's not our problem." That's great, Onkyo support guy, but the problem isn't that 4k @ 120hz doesn't work under A configuration. The problem is 4k @ 120hz doesn't work for me under ANY configuration. I have 8k high speed HDMI cords. I have a brand new PC and monitor. This may not seem like a big deal, but I SPECIFICALLY researched and purchased this model due to its confident marketing of 4k @ 120hz pass through capability. And Onkyo told me, in essence, "sucks to suck." 2. It's super lame and inexplicable why only the front left&right speakers have proper connections on the back. The rest are the tiniest terminals of all time that you're going to have to strip some of the copper off your speaker wires to jam in there. 3. This is neither here nor there as it is very likely a Windows/driver issue, but I've had intermittent trouble getting Windows to recognize this unit as Dolby Atmos capable. YMMV. Want to love this unit, but given the, from my perspective, pretty blatant false advertising and refusal to help me get a key marketed feature, I'm forced to leave a below average review.

Love the Onkyo 5100!
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.GREAT receiver!! This is the third Onkyo receiver I’ve owned and it’s outstanding. Upgrading from a 12 year old Onkyo (still works great just older hdmi that won’t support 4k). It’s powering a 5.1 system and even at only 80 watts/channel it’s loud and clear. Calibration and room correction are a good starting point but you will need to tweak the settings to taste (calibration set my fronts to a 40hz crossover even though I have a sub) Updates are easy with wifi. NOTE: Old reviews talk to spring clips for speaker connections however this model has been updated to binding posts. Additionally, this model does not support HDR10+ only supports HDR and Dolby Vision. IMO not a game changer unless you want to spend another $100 for the NR6100

Good Idea, but the Spring Spkr Clips are Tell-Tale
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this, wanting really to purchase the Onkyo TX-NR7100, which has still to hit the shelves but has been unavailable for months now. The NR5100 would suffice, although it it a bit limited on HDMI inputs, they were sufficient for me. I wanted a future-proof product to replace my Integra (aka Onkyo) DTR-40.3 which sounded great but did not support 4k video. My grudge was that for the center and surround channels it just had spring speaker clips, not screw terminals and I associate them with budget receivers. So I bit and bought this at Best Buy. Pros All the inputs and outputs for my setup Sufficient amplifier power Feature -rich, including 8k video Nice menu system, albeit a little confusing 'Works with Sonos'. Don't underrate this. As soon as you select a Sonos playlist on your (phone) app the amplifier will power up and select the Sonos audio input and volume level you had previously set. That's nice, but even nicer is it does not introduce a processing delay in the audio. I was vexed by my Integra and previous receivers. They would add a few hundred milliseconds in the audio path if you applied the 'All-Speaker' audio setting. The only way to prevent this was to limit the Sonos audio to stereo, in the room where you had installed rear and ceiling speakers! The delay would cause a horrible echo when you walked into another room where a different Sonos was also playing. I had to use a 6 channel pre-amp to fool the Integra, but it is not necessary on this unit. Cons Those spring clip speaker connections are really second rate. Not a great AccuEQ. This room-sound calibration system comes in different recipes. This was a one-location low-end solution. I was used to placing the supplied microphone in different locations during the setup process, to equalize the sound settings to accommodate more than one person seated in the family room. Noticeably lost is your ability to review the settings it arrives at as well. You cannot review the equalizer settings it has applied. Sonos music sounded pretty good, but the amplifier sound playing a movie felt 'cold'. OK, not great English, but the sound was definitely off-par. I tried recalibrating, but in the end, the immersive sound delight I was pursuing simply felt 'not there'. I ended up returning it and managed to purchase a reconditioned Onkyo TX-RZ840 directly from the Onkyo website. It is sweet, and well worth the extra dollars.

A pretty good unit, with WIFI control
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This unit works very well. I got it because the HDMI board on my old Onkyo went bad. Got this one mostly because of the wifi and app control. You still cannot control every aspect of the unit by the app, but you can change inputs and volume and many other things which is needed for me because the unit is not mounted line of sight. One bad thing is the center/surround/height speaker outputs are old school wire push in and NOT banana pins. Even though the front L/R inputs ARE banana pin. The other, wish it had, was 6 HDMI inputs instead of 4.

Base receiver. Nothing fancy.
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Input switching is slow. When passing 4k, the screen will occasionally blip out for 10 seconds then return. Started doing this after about 6 months. Still a pretty good unit. Not enough HDMI inputs. Will replace soon.

is ok for what it is but comes with drawbacks
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not a bad choice for a budget receiver but I found 3 things particularly annoying: 1) no usb on the front, have to get behind the receiver/rack every time you want to add music to your usb 2) bluetooth is terrible, constantly cuts out 3) speaker connections in back do not accommodate banana plugs

Junk HDMI
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Onkyo has long been struggling with HDMI issues, after my TX-NR 809 , i had read that Onkyo had overcome many of those problems, so when the oppertunity came up to by tge TX-NR5100, i thought it may be a better product, boy was i wrong, still having HDMI priblems, and now CEC and eARC as well, I literraly have to power reboot it every morning else the audio from both TV, cable and apple tv, goes into never land and does not come back until the TX-NR5100 is power rebooted (hold the power button for 5 seconds), sorry to say, I would not recommend.

Bluetooth problem
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought it for future proof, 8k but mainly because it has Bluetooth transmitter so I can connect Bluetooth headphones. Tried to connect it but it doesn’t stay connected, always disconnect after 10-20 seconds. Other than that there are no major differences between this unit and the one I use right now TX-NR555. Also the price suppose to be $499 when onkyo announced it. Because of chip shortage they increased the price to $599. Honestly it’s not worth the price to upgrade so I returned it.

Junk HDMI
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Returned my first one for a failed subwoofer output. Should’ve just got my money back. Exchanged it for another one and after only 4 months the hdmi failed. Won’t output from any source setting.
