Not fully compatible with Xbox Series X

If you're going to get this receiver to hook up your Xbox Series X, then don't bother. It will do 4K 120hz with vrr but unfortunately with no HDR. Looking at the PDF manual it states that the HDMI 2.1 port is capped at 24gps, not 40gps. Anyways other than that it was OK. Sound was decent but definitely not better than my Denon from 2014. Audysee room correction is better than the standard Onkyo room correction. The higher ended Onkyos will come with DiracLive but this one doesn't have it. The on screen user interface was nice and easy to follow. Anyway, I will be returning it and waiting (forever) for Denons HDMI 2.1 bug free receivers.

Good Idea, but the Spring Spkr Clips are Tell-Tale

I purchased this, wanting really to purchase the Onkyo TX-NR7100, which has still to hit the shelves but has been unavailable for months now. The NR5100 would suffice, although it it a bit limited on HDMI inputs, they were sufficient for me. I wanted a future-proof product to replace my Integra (aka Onkyo) DTR-40.3 which sounded great but did not support 4k video. My grudge was that for the center and surround channels it just had spring speaker clips, not screw terminals and I associate them with budget receivers. So I bit and bought this at Best Buy. Pros All the inputs and outputs for my setup Sufficient amplifier power Feature -rich, including 8k video Nice menu system, albeit a little confusing 'Works with Sonos'. Don't underrate this. As soon as you select a Sonos playlist on your (phone) app the amplifier will power up and select the Sonos audio input and volume level you had previously set. That's nice, but even nicer is it does not introduce a processing delay in the audio. I was vexed by my Integra and previous receivers. They would add a few hundred milliseconds in the audio path if you applied the 'All-Speaker' audio setting. The only way to prevent this was to limit the Sonos audio to stereo, in the room where you had installed rear and ceiling speakers! The delay would cause a horrible echo when you walked into another room where a different Sonos was also playing. I had to use a 6 channel pre-amp to fool the Integra, but it is not necessary on this unit. Cons Those spring clip speaker connections are really second rate. Not a great AccuEQ. This room-sound calibration system comes in different recipes. This was a one-location low-end solution. I was used to placing the supplied microphone in different locations during the setup process, to equalize the sound settings to accommodate more than one person seated in the family room. Noticeably lost is your ability to review the settings it arrives at as well. You cannot review the equalizer settings it has applied. Sonos music sounded pretty good, but the amplifier sound playing a movie felt 'cold'. OK, not great English, but the sound was definitely off-par. I tried recalibrating, but in the end, the immersive sound delight I was pursuing simply felt 'not there'. I ended up returning it and managed to purchase a reconditioned Onkyo TX-RZ840 directly from the Onkyo website. It is sweet, and well worth the extra dollars.

A nice unit that can power front speakers with a 4 ohm impedance. But it drove me nuts!!! With my SONY Bravia TV, no matter what the settings on either device, and there are many with these things, when using the eARC mode, when you turn on the TV the receiver always turns on!!! That drove me nuts! And when I called Onkyo tech support to see if there was a way around that, to be able to use the TV remote to control the receiver but avoid the auto turn-on, the reply was "you can't have your cake and eat it too." Unfortunately, he was not aware of the original version, used by the crazy Unabomber in his manifesto, that makes more sense. "You can't eat your cake and have it too."

Great sounding receiver. Setup was a breeze. ARC worked intermittently and would seem to cut out a lot. What really turned me off from this receiver tho is the lack of speaker binding posts. Why a $500 plus receiver has only spring clips for speaker wires is beyond me. I decided to exchange it for an open box Yamaha RX-A2A which is superior all around.

Product is great, buying at Best Buy, not so much. This was my 2nd unit I bought open box and it was indicated that it included all accessories, which bumped up the price from the "good" and "fair" open box units. I could have saved $50+ buying one that did not include the accessories, but I wanted the setup mic and antennas supplied with the unit. Neither unit came with them. When I called Best Buy, they offered a $25 gift card. That doesn't even come to half the difference in price from "excellent" to "fair" condition. After wasting time, money the least they could do was provide the unit for the correct price. Best Buy doesn't care about customer service anymore and that's too bad. It's the ONLY reason they should still exist. As far as the receiver. It works good. The streaming functionality is wonderful and the ability to control it from the phone is even better. I have this setup to where I am only using my phone to play music with it now from multiple streaming services. It's all controlled through the app and it relatively responsive. Too bad Best Buy sucks now.

Not a bad choice for a budget receiver but I found 3 things particularly annoying: 1) no usb on the front, have to get behind the receiver/rack every time you want to add music to your usb 2) bluetooth is terrible, constantly cuts out 3) speaker connections in back do not accommodate banana plugs

Great receiver, just not for my situation

This is a great receiver if you do not need two zones to be independently volume controlled. In my home, I have two outside speakers that are wired into this receiver as all the wires come to one spot in my home. I wanted the ability to be able to be playing content inside as well as content outside. In trying to turn the outside speakers louder, the only way that this could be done is if I also turned the inside speakers louder as well. It can also be done if I switch the receiver to only play sound on the outside speakers. Because this receiver doesn't have true multiple zones for the speakers, this is not possible. I talked with best buy support as well as the best buy install guys to try and figure this out with this model, but they stated that this is not possible with this model. That being said, this is a great receiver that can push 4k at 120hz as well as 8k so if you need it for pushing your PS5 graphics, it can do that with no problem. However in my situation, I am returning and purchasing the higher model.

Works for the most part except you will drive yourself crazy on certain games that switch resolution, vrr and etc. the screen usually cuts out and you have to change input on the receiver and back to get the video to come back on.

The receiver was working great for about a week. Then I started to have an issue where it would shut off and say check speaker wire. After some diagnosing and testing, I found out it was an issue with the front left speaker. Replaced the wire, but the issue still continued. After doing some more testing and diagnostic came to find out the issue was the receiver it self. Had to replace with a new one.

i like the way it hooks up but i don't know if it's my speakers or the unit but in order to get the full effects of the surround sound i have to turn the volume up way high like around 70 to 80 so over all its a nice unit

This receiver does everything as advertised. However there is nothing that makes it "better" than the competition that I can identify. Disappointed with on screen graphics. It looks like something from early eighties or earlier. But not so different from other brands. If it will stand the test of time I will add at least one more rating star! Easy to use and enjoy!
