Customers recognize the Roam Smart Portable Speaker's impressive sound quality, portability, and surprisingly large sound for its compact size. Many appreciate its ease of setup and Bluetooth connectivity, along with its water resistance for outdoor use. However, some users point to inconsistencies in battery life and occasional difficulties with charging. It is an excellent speaker, a clear sound and intense bass, maybe it lacks a little volume but hey, what do you expect with such a small size.

Great speaker. Nice bass. Connected to Alexa no problem. Exactly what I expected from Sonos. Quality item at a competitive price. Took it to OBX this past week. Definitely beach and pool proof. Just FYI, it floats.

Pros Well balanced sound for the size Surprising bass for the size Trueplay works with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Waterproof Clickable buttons work even when wet Charges with USB-C Charges wirelessly Sound swap makes transitioning quick Can be paired for stereo sound on Wi-Fi Auto switches between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Works with Google Assistant and Alexa Cons Auto switching didn’t switch within the app App kept prompting to go through tutorial Google Assistant took several attempts to pair No carrying bag or pouch included Portable speakers have been around for a long time but, until recently, Sonos had no fully portable option. The Move offered great sound and battery life but wasn’t practical to toss in a bag and go. If you are invested in the Sonos ecosystem and have been wanting a truly portable speaker, just save the time reading. The Roam looks, feels, sounds, and operates just the same as the rest of your Sonos equipment. No surprises here and it will suit you well. If you are more open to other options in the market, then hopefully you will find the rest useful. Design The style is understated. No odd protrusions, stylized panels, or flashing lights. It’s just a simple, matte black triangle with rounded corners. The only color besides matte black is the white Sonos logo. The power button and charging port are located on the corner opposite the speaker grill. There are four rubberized feet that allow you to place it flat and also the ends are rubberized allowing it to stand vertically. The Play/Pause, Volume Up, Volume Down, and Microphone mute button are all on the end of the speaker. Included in the box is a usb-c cable but no charging block. Wireless charging is built in. You can use any Qi compatible charger or purchase the custom designed magnetic wireless charger. It would have been amazing if Sonos just included the wireless charger similar to how they include the charging ring with the Move. A carrying case would also be a good addition. Setup and Performance Setup was different than other Sonos products. When you add it to your account you just have to tap the back of the speaker and it will pair automatically. There is also a Product Tour included in the app, but for some reason it didn’t show up until the speaker was in Bluetooth mode and it was tapped on. Running through the product tour and tapping done also doesn’t prevent it from coming back up which is odd. You can configure Google Assistant or Alexa but the setup was a bit finicky. While trying to configure Google Assistant an unknown error occurred several times before it worked. The error occurred when it switched to Google Assistant so this may not even be related to Sonos and eventually it started working. Of course, being a Sonos product, it can be included in speaker groups with other Sonos speakers with one caveat. The speakers must be visible in the new S2 app. It will not work with speakers in the S1 app. A handy addition is called Sound Swap where if you press and hold the play button while near another S2 speaker the other speakers will play an inaudible high frequency sound. Based on which sound is loudest it will switch to the audio to that speaker without any need for opening the app. There is also a feature in which it passes the audio to the entire group, so it takes some practice to make sure you press the button the correct way for what you want to happen. Once you get it down, it becomes a handy feature. Once you have everything set up and start to hear it is where it surprises you. You do have to keep expectations in check with such a small driver, but it did have a surprising amount of bass for its size. While there are other portable speakers that are larger and have more bass, the Roam seems more balanced. The size does favor more acoustic and vocal music, but it still does a reasonable job with electronic music and bass heavy tracks. It can produce rumbling or droning bass but if what you listen to has more dynamic bass, this speaker can’t work miracles. Hard thumping bass needs a big speaker. That said, you can improve range by placing it on a bookshelf or other surface where it can resonate. If you really wanted to, you could pair two in a stereo pair but the use cases are limited. First, it only works on Wi-Fi. Second, if you can only use stereo on Wi-Fi then it is worth considering a pair of Sonos One speakers as they barely cost any more and their sound presence is much larger. Like the Move, the Roam has Trueplay where it can adjust based on where the speaker is placed. Unlike previous versions, it is said to work in both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi mode. It doesn’t work miracles but there was a subtle difference where when it was moved into a bathroom that echoed it was able to prevent the music from echoing. Unlike the Move, the Roam can automatically switch between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth without user interaction. This is a nice touch although in use it did have an issue. While the speaker switched to Bluetooth automatically, the app did not and required manually switching from the Sonos S2 app to YouTube Music and back again as the speaker transitioned between connections. When out of Wi-Fi range the S2 app would go blank and say it couldn’t connect to Wi-Fi. Videos show the S2 app switching automatically and showing a large Bluetooth icon so hopefully it’s just an app update in the works that will improve this. That said, it’s not a huge problem to switch music apps for now. Battery life so far has been good. On standby it last for the better part of a day. If you need to preserve the battery or are going to be carrying it in a bag you have to remember to long press the power button for at least 5 seconds to fully turn it off. It feels very sturdy so hopefully it will survive any accidental drops. The IP67 waterproof is definitely welcome in such a portable speaker. You can literally put it into water and so long as it can still get a wireless signal it will continue to play. A fun party trick is to either partially or mostly submerge the main driver in the water. Depending on how submerged it is the water will either dance to the music or spray out. It will sound a little muffled at first until the water is driven back out when you play music as you take it out of the water. Final Thoughts If you are a Sonos fan in the market for a small portable speaker, you have likely already made the decision. For anyone else, you mainly miss out on sound swap but all the features are still there in what is a very competitive speaker. If you are in the market for a small portable speaker and value balance sound over excessive bass or gimmicky features, the Sonos Roam is worth a look.

    ## Design The Roam speaker from Sonos is compact and lightweight, making it easy to pick up and take with you around the house. It has a triangular design that can either be set horizontally or vertically on a flat service (and I just realized that the SONOS logo looks the same upside down). There are 4 buttons on one end of the speaker: play/pause, volume up, volume down, and a microphone mute button. On the back of the unit is the power/standby button and a USB-C charging input. ## Performance I was very surprised by the strong musical performance of this speaker. While it doesn't get as loud as the Sonos One speaker for example, highs and mids come through clearly and the bass is very good! The bass isn't as strong as Sonos larger speakers, but you can use the EQ setting in the Sonos app to increase it somewhat if you like. Like the other speakers in the Sonos ecosystem, you can group the Roam with other Sonos speakers for synchronized playback. ## Features - WiFi: The speaker connects directly to your home WiFi to stream music. You can use the Sonos app to play virtually any music you might have: Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music, iHeart Radio, TuneIn, LiveXLive, and many more. What I like about the Sonos app is that you can set what you want to play and close it if you want. The speaker will connect and play the music on its own, so it doesn't tie up your phone or pass along any text notifications or phone ringtones. - Bluetooth: When you move out of range of your home WiFi, you can instead use Bluetooth to connect your phone directly to the speaker to stream music and podcasts. - Alexa or Google Assistant: You can configure Alexa or Google Assistant on the Roam and then use voice commands to play music or do other tasks such as check the weather. Microphone performance seems to work well and can typically "hear" me over the music that is playing. - Automatic Trueplay: This feature uses the devices built-in microphone to get a "feel" for the space it is playing in and adjusts the sound accordingly. For example, when I place the Roam speaker against a wall in a corner, which tends to overemphasis the bass, the Roam adjusted and backed off the bass slightly, which made it less "boomy". - Qi charging: I was surprised to learn that the Roam can be set vertically on a Qi charger to recharge! This is slower than the USB-C wired charging, but it's a nice bonus that doesn't require the purchase of a special base (although one is available if you so desire). Qi charging performance has been hit or miss for me: sometimes the speaker will charge up to about 70% and then seem to stall out, while other times it charges up to 100% without issue. I guess it depends on the charging pad you use and whether you hit the "sweet spot" as far as matching up the charging coils. ## Battery Life Sonos states that the speaker can provide up to 10 hours of playback on a single charge. You can press the power button on the back to place the speaker in “standby” mode, but the battery continues to drain, losing about 10-20% overnight. If you leave the speaker on standby when not in use, you'll likely need to recharge it daily. Turning off the microphone seems to help extend battery life somewhat. ## Summary The Sonos Roam speaker is a strong performer and sounds great as a standalone speaker or when integrated into an existing Sonos system. With water resistance and drop protection, you can simply enjoy your music without worrying about babying the speaker. The built-in Alexa/Google Assistant integration is also a nice touch as you can queue up music without using your phone.

Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5) I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the Sonos Roam Smart Portable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Speaker in its sleek black variant, and it's safe to say that I was thoroughly impressed. As a tech enthusiast and music lover, I had high expectations, and the Sonos Roam exceeded them in every way. Design & Build Quality (5/5): The Sonos Roam's design is a testament to both elegance and practicality. Its compact form factor and lightweight construction make it incredibly portable, perfect for taking on the go. The minimalist black finish gives it a timeless aesthetic that blends seamlessly with any decor. The build quality is outstanding, and it feels robust enough to withstand the rigors of outdoor adventures. Audio Performance (5/5): What truly sets the Sonos Roam apart is its exceptional audio performance. Despite its small size, this speaker packs a powerful punch. The sound quality is rich, clear, and well-balanced across the entire spectrum. Whether you're listening to your favorite tunes, streaming podcasts, or watching movies, the Roam delivers impressive sound with deep bass, detailed mids, and crisp highs. It's equally impressive at lower volumes for background music or at higher volumes for a room-filling experience. Connectivity & Voice Assistants (5/5): The Roam offers versatile connectivity options. You can easily switch between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modes, ensuring seamless playback regardless of your device or network. The inclusion of both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant adds another layer of convenience. Voice commands work flawlessly, allowing you to control your music, check the weather, or even set reminders without lifting a finger. Battery Life (5/5): Sonos has struck a great balance here. The Roam boasts an impressive battery life that can last through extended listening sessions, making it suitable for all-day use. When not in use, it enters a power-saving mode, ensuring it's ready to go when you are. The included USB-C charging cable makes recharging quick and hassle-free. Water and Dust Resistance (5/5): The IP67 rating means the Roam can withstand immersion in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, making it a fantastic companion for poolside parties or outdoor adventures. It's also resistant to dust and dirt, further enhancing its durability. Sonos App Integration (5/5): The Sonos app continues to be a user-friendly and feature-rich platform for controlling your Sonos devices. It's effortless to set up the Roam, group it with other Sonos speakers, and fine-tune the audio settings to your liking. In conclusion, the Sonos Roam Smart Portable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Speaker in black exceeded my expectations in every aspect. Its impressive audio quality, versatile connectivity options, voice assistant integration, and rugged build make it a fantastic choice for both indoor and outdoor use. If you're in the market for a portable speaker that delivers exceptional sound and smart functionality, the Sonos Roam should be at the top of your list. It's a premium speaker that justifies every penny spent.

Quality build with great sound. I will say the volume and bass didn't not initially wow me but after playing with the settings in the app, the sound definitely fills the room. I haven't played it in an outside environment yet but this speaker feels like premium quality. If you already have a sonos ecosystem this speaker is a must buy. There are so many features packed into this small amd very lightweight speaker. Not only can you integrate it into a sonos ecosystem effortlessly you can put it in bluetooth mode and play your Bluetooth source throughout your sonos ecosystem. It literally adds Bluetooth support to your sonos sound system. And the quick sound swap feature is pretty cool. I only have one speaker and I know you can pair two for stereo sound. Although it has incredible sound, do not purchase for home sound alone. If you do not have a sonos ecosystem this may be a cheaper and great way to start but for incredible home sound, get a soundbar with a pair of ones and a sub or two with a pair of fives. That is very costly but very worth it. I'm looking forward to taking the roam with me on the go. I haven't used the Move outside of a demo at the store. That had deeper bass amd sound than the roam but the roam is realistically tge better choice for mobility and its light enough to go on my rack in the shower. I love that it's water resistant better than the move.

I have been waiting for this portable speaker to be released. I have Bose, JBL, HK in the portable speaker pool. To compare with this new add to the stable. I am very impressed by the size of the speaker since it is such a small package and such good sound. I will say that the sound quality is pretty good tends to mix some of the lows like a Bose and highs like my HK. The best description that fits is that this speaker has "presence". It definitely does not appear to be able to have the power/volume of some of the other speakers and the battery life seems a bit less than the other speakers. This speaker is great for a smaller room or office. But since I am familiar with the Sonos ecosystem I knew what I was getting in to with this purchase.

Great sound for its size! Very portable compared to the Sonos Move and would recommend Roam for trips to the park/traveling and keeping Move home for outdoor use. Roam is light with crisp clear sound and reasonable bass for its size. Move is heavy. Roam 40% volume is equal to about 10% volume of the Sonos One. I rexommend Roam, but it should have came with the charging block with it’s price point

This is my shower speaker as it’s waterproof. Works super well and can get quite loud. The app is very easy and useful for expanding upon that. Bass and treble are the two adjustments and loudness is an on off switch. I prefer my Bose revolve+ II, but when they’re not charged this is a great alternative.

I have about a dozen Sonos devices throughout my house which I've acquired over the years. I've been looking for a portable bluetooth speaker to take with us on vacations. We tend to rent homes with a pool and want to bring a decent waterproof speaker that can be easily thrown into a backpack. The Roam sounds very good at low to medium-high volumes. It starts to fall apart quickly at anything above that and it does lack the clarity of the One speakers. That said, it has nice bass to it and it's perfectly acceptable for a portable speaker. The buttons are easy to use and the battery life is fine for its use case. We have two of these - one black and one white and I suspect the white one will be the travel device due to the white color reflecting the heat of the sun a bit better. When home, these are found all throughout the house. Showers, porch, bedrooms, garage, etc. Quite easy to pick up and listen on the go as roaming about the house, puttering, cleaning, etc. All in all, very nice devices. Nice enough that I picked up two of them. The JBL competition such as the Charge 5 may have a bit stronger sound but if you are already invested in the Sonos ecosystem these little speakers make quite a bit of sense.

The Sonos Roam sounds good for its small size. The speaker is travel friendly, lightweight and simple to use. I choose the white model over black due to my Sonos setup being white and other light colored devices that I own. The sound of the speaker is not overwhelming and it does not lack bass. The sound of the speaker is neutral and evenly distributed. I wish Sonos would have made this a bluetooth speaker first and a smart speaker second. What I'm saying is in order to even use the bluetooth portion of the speaker you must download the Sonos 2 application and connect through wifi like all other Sonos devices. After the device has been setup via internet the option to use the device as a bluetooth speaker is presented. For many people this won't be an issue but for those who hate apps or don't wish to use wifi to use their speaker this product is not for them. Another thing that I think is an inconvenience Sonos did not include a wall power adapter for the device. The speaker requires a wall adapter with a voltage of 5V2A or greater to charge the speaker. Using anything less will take a very long time to charge or won't charge the speaker at all. After learning this I opted to purchased the wireless charger sold by Sonos. The charger works fast however; any Qi charger with the voltage listed about would work fine. I suggest if purchasing the wireless charger to purchase it from Sonos directly as it includes the power adapter, if purchased from Best Buy the wall adapter is not included but the cost is the same. Finally there are many reviews regarding the battery life of the speaker. Sonos advertise the speaker as 10 hours listening time and days of standby time when in standby mode. Results will vary but there is no way in standby mode the speaker will last more than a few days. When in standby mode the speaker will periodically power itself on to check for a wireless network and updates. This is not a problem when at home but when traveling and when not in use I highly suggest to power the device completely off to preserve battery. Through mix usage in a 24 hour period I managed to get 18 hours of usage using, wifi, bluetooth and placing the device in standby for about an hour throughout the 24 hour period. Overall I am happy with the device and all that it does. If you live in a Sonos ecosystem and like the sound of Sonos you won't be disappointed.

We’ve been traveling with the Oontz 3 Ultra for a few years now and always thought it sounded great. We use it in hotel rooms and cruise ship cabins. We have SONOS throughout the house and were hopeful for a small improvement in our travel listening when the Roam was announced. We are quite amazed at how much clear sound with punchy, rattle-free bass this thing puts out. And it’s even smaller than the Oontz and has the same weight. I don’t know how SONOS pulled this off, but the Roam fills a medium size room with very rich sound. The only minor drawbacks are the price and that the control buttons are black against black. But the buttons are logically placed and I quickly learned where they are. The price is steep but still a good value for such quality sound and portability. Definitely 5 stars.

Love this speaker. Great entry level for audiophiles. If you are in the Sonos ecosystem, you will be thrilled to take this speaker on the go with you, or just as an extra where the standard speakers don't normally go. Bluetooth or wifi. It's a fine default speaker for a small or medium space. Sounds great: good highs, warm mids, and solid bass. Best portable speaker I've heard at this price point. Battery life is fine, but not the best. You get what you pay for, and it's worth it.

Overall, very pleased with the speaker so far but it isn't perfect by any means. The sound is pretty impressive for such a small device; however, it is a bit bass heavy but I get that you do that for times it is going to be outside. The overall sound is very warm. The features are great, having both WIFI and Bluetooth as options and each have worked great. Now the issue, this thing won't stay asleep even after being put in sleep mode. At this time I am having to turn off the device when not in use otherwise you will tear through the battery very quickly. Not a huge thing but also not something you should be having to do all the time.
