Customers are saying

Customers recognize the Roam Smart Portable Speaker's impressive sound quality, portability, and surprisingly large sound for its compact size. Many appreciate its ease of setup and Bluetooth connectivity, along with its water resistance for outdoor use. However, some users point to inconsistencies in battery life and occasional difficulties with charging. A few also mention that the volume could be improved and that the price point may be high for some consumers.

Speaker Software Bricked - DO NOT BUY GEN 1 ROAM.

Worst Speaker Ever. I bought becasue of airplay 2. It worked for 1 week. Then I started noticing issues like I went camping and it turned itself on the drive to the campsite and was dead when I went to turn it on. Lost all connection in the sonos app. Reset three times went through all troubleshooting steps with support. Product is bricked. They mentioned that there is a high amount of issues with this product. It took us 45 minutes to get it to turn on from a "Sleep Mode" the speaker goes into when completely dead. Apparently it does not accept charge when at super low levels while in this mode.... My return period with best buy ended 3 days ago. Ha, Looks like im stuck with a brand new broken sonos speaker. I guess this is what I as a consumer get for buying Gen1.

So disappointed. We have a SONOS system at home and I wanted to have a portable speaker to take with me, so having a device that would work with my current system and travel was a dream. Until reality set in. -the product keeps turning itself on, especially if I use the included case. Which results in it is either out of power or playing randomly. The button needs to be changed to a slide type or to be moved to another location on the device -the controls cannot be seen with my eyes. I need to take a photo of it, blow it up and then use the buttons for up or down volume. I guess eventually I would learn, but geez… -it will not play with my Sonos amp, although it has it as one of the source choices -Bluetooth works but you need to physically connect it each time vs. having the speaker as a choice when launching music Sadly, its going back.

Hi, and thank you for this review. We recently launched an update allowing you to control the experience with it turning on. Under the room settings you can now control the power mode so that it will turn off completely instead of going to sleep. john.milton

I got two of this because I thought they would be a good complement for my Sonos ARC. They’re small but that’s OK. The truth is I spend around 30 minutes of my life everyday trying to get them “online”. The battery is supposed to last for 10 hrs, never seen that, they are constantly out of battery. They are constantly offline. I have to reset them almost on a daily basis. Often times one of them is online and works perfect but the other isn’t even if they are close enough to the router. When I take them out of my house it’s almost impossible to connect via Bluetooth. And of course the battery last nothing, even if you turn them off, by the time you try to turn them on again, they would be out of battery. The whole idea of the Sonos wifi connected system is great but it’s just an idea. In reality it’s a struggle.

Hi there. Here are a few tips to help preserve Roam's battery life: make sure you are powering down when not in use (hold power button full 5 seconds), disable any voice assistants when not plugged in, and ensure that you are charging with a 7.5W or higher charger. If you have tried these methods and are still experiencing issues, please reach out to our support team to see how we can help: support.sonos.com. john.milton

Couldn’t connect via Bluetooth at all. Sonos NEEDS your location to set up which means setting up another account to use another service and you know the deal. It should be as easy as turning it on and connecting, it is not.

    VERY DISAPPOINTED!

VERY DISAPPOINTED in this speaker! I bought 4 of these Sonos Roam speakers and a Sonos TV sound bar. Sound is excellent! We also bought a the wireless charger for each of the Roam speakers. Per the advice of the Best Buy Geek Squad tech who installed the entire system, we always left the speakers on the chargers. That way we could pick a speaker up, go outside, and it woud be all charged up. Everything worked great for just over a year. 2 months after my warranty expired one of the Roam speakers would not take a charge or turn on. After several sessions with Sonos customer support & trying all kinds of things to get it resolved, they essentially said it was a brick and unfixable. They said battery is not replaceable and it was no longer under warranty. So 2 months out of warranty, they wouldn't replace it but what they would is give me 10% off a new one, which at the time would cost more than other stores that had them on sale! AND, to top it off, another one of the speakers just turned into a brick, about 6 months out of warranty, which really torqued me off!

I’ve had connection problems from the start with this. And now it won’t charge. I had loved my Sonos products but this one I don’t. And now, I’m having connection problems with all of my Sonos devices. This is a know issue that Sonos has still not resolved. As of now, a couple thousand dollars worth of paperweights. I would not recommend ANY Sonos products anymore.

Bought it in September 2021 and it stopped working after 2 years. It gave me the same defective issue that many are complaining about where it just stops charging and only shows you an orange light when plugged in. You would think that for $180 it would last longer and that's not the only issue it gave me. It constantly lost the Airplay connection as well. It's disappointing because when it worked the sound was nice.

I now have had it for 6+ months. This thing sounds great but ergonomics are terrible. Power on/off button is terrible; never sure if the thing is really turned off. Easily could have put a slider for power off. Well why do you want to make sure the power is off? Because the power drain is terrible in this so whenever you need it it’s dead. Oh and the orange led is easy to see — it means the battery is so low that it’s not going to work even if plugged in and charging. Who did UX testing on this device? This device also doesn’t feel very sturdy from a materials perspective. When pressing the power button you end up depressing the opposite side which I can feel bending in. Can’t really hook it to backpack. It would have been nice to have a carry case for this.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review Sonos Roam. One tip that may help with the power button is this: Hold for 3 seconds to put it in bluetooth and hold for 5 to power off completely. We recommend a minimum of 7.5 watt charger. We offer lifetime support on our products, so please don't hesitate to reach out to us with questions. At Sonos.com/support you can reach out however you prefer. john.milton

We bought two of these for a family graduation party. Bluetooth would not recognize the device. Downloaded the Sonos App, which required us to set these bluetooth speakers up via WiFi…. When that would not work, the app recomnended to connect with ETHERNET. Save your money, never buy these, and just go with UE or Bose…

From the first day there was sporadic issues in connection. All over the internet there’s one opinion that there wireless technology is not working great with so many funtionalities (apple play, alexa, BT) and its poor. But story doesnt end here. It suddenly one day stops working. It just charge charge charge and never starts. Theres a whole group of people who have similar issue. Look on reddit and reviews section for more details. But overall paying so much for such a cheap product is not worth it. I think its biggest USP (multi modal connection) is its biggest downside

Worthless now. Worked great for about 1 1/2 years. Now won't turn on. Dead. I get the orange light when I attempt to charge but nothing else. Power button now does nothing. I've searched the internet and see lot of complaints about the exact same thing. Sadly, worthless.

Sounds great when I can get it to stay recognized in my app…which then I have had to factory reset to get it to be able to pair with the Sonos app again. I think after the fifth time I need to ditch this sad product. Can’t really fairly rate battery life or range but that’s exactly why this is the worst portable speaker I’ve ever known. BOO. Plus…I’m kind of over the Sonos One because who needs another darn app???

Cannot recommend. As someone who has enjoyed Sonos products for years and currently owns a Sonos Beam, Sonos Play:5, two Sonos Play:3s and two Sonos Play:1s, I really wanted to like this product. First, the good news. It is an attractive speaker and comes in very nice packaging if you are into unboxing. The sound quality is good. Second, the bad: everything else. This product should never have been released with the battery issues. If you purchase you will need to keep it plugged in at ALL times that you aren't actively using it. Even when you power the speaker fully off, the battery will run down to zero in about a week. (Compared to my plethora of older off-brand portable bluetooth speakers that keep a charge for months with powered off). I first thought the "issue" was the speaker was powering up from sleep whenever I used my home Sonos system (bad design choice!). However, I am now on vacation away from home with no other nearby Sonos system and can tell you the Roam is just bad technology. What is the purpose of a portable speaker that cannot keep a charge? What is the purpose of a portable speaker that you need to keep plugged in ALL the time? This is the most disappointing piece of technology I have bought in a long time. Do NOT recommend. Buy a cheap $30 Bluetooth speaker. It may not sound as good, but at least it won't run out of juice 20 minutes into your day at the beach because you left the speaker in your bag for 2 days instead of plugged into the wall.

    Sonos Customer Service Sucks

Garbage. I bought this to use at my work office and it constantly disconnected from Wi-Fi. Talked to tech support and they couldn’t help me at all. Reset it multiple times and was still having the same problem. They told me it must be the Wi-Fi router at my work. At this point I decided to take this home and use it. Connected no problem to Wi-Fi and you can control it through the phone but Aleaxa no longer works. It registers that it heard you and responds as if it is doing the action but nothing happens. I understand things happen but sonos customer service was so awful I would never buy sonos again. Been having issues with this speaker since I got it a little over a month ago trying all different things to try and get it to work with no luck. Also out of the return period now so I guess I’m stuck with a defective speaker.

Purchased this premium product, as I have Sonos Beam, and was impressed with the sound signature Boy, I was wrong Out of the box, this product worked wonderfully for the first few weeks Initially, Bluetooth connectivity problem occurred. I was trying to live with them rebooting the speaker occasionally Now, it stopped charging all of a sudden. Tried with all kinds of cables and chargers. Ran out of the BestBuy return window. Sonos support is a pain in the neck and my credit card doesn't have an extended warranty All I have now is a $200 white useless brick Comparatively, my previous Bose Portable speaker lasted for 4 years before giving up

I already have several Sonos speakers with the S1 controller system and have been extremely satisfied. But Sonos has made it extremely difficult to add new items without purchasing all NEW speakers, etc. . This portable speaker, which I thought was really neat and would be convenient only to find out it is NOT compatible with the existing S1 system without disconnecting all the other system speakers, etc. I'm not about to spend well over $150 and dismantle all my other speakers. I had to return it. I know technology changes but Sonos products are not cheap and Sonos is not fair with its long time customers. I'll not buy SONOS anything again.

I love the sound, really, it’s great! I have 8 echo devices, I understand Bluetooth as WiFi… so please don’t think I am just an idiot struggling with technology. Today while golfing it took 4 holes to even get the speaker to connect. The app is horrible and the speaker lights are confusing, although the define the light configuration online. If you plan to use this speaker around the house on one network, you will probably be fine. But I take it golfing, to hotels, to the pool and it NEVER connects in less than 10 minutes. Today I restarted my phone because I just couldn’t understand, it said it was playing, said it was connected but no sound (yes, volume was up!). The other thing that sucks is that it will not charge with the USB port in my truck or a golf cart. So I bought a portable power bank that will charge it but no other cords or chargers work. Just the one cord that came with the speaker. I have tried usb-c and A and wireless pads but literally nothing works. I hate this speaker and I hate to say it!

Repeatedly stopped charging and needed to be reset to work. Now seems bricked and Sonos's solution is to buy an overpriced charger from them since it's a known issue with seemingly every charger I already own. If it only works with one special charger, they need to include it with the purchase.

I have many SONOS products in my home and my overall satisfaction with Sonos is very high. The Sonos Roam made that opinion fall considerably. The Roam took forever to charge with the supplied USB cable. You can buy as an accessory plug to connect the USB to a wall socket for an extra 20$ or a wireless charger for 50$. Really Sonos, your a high end experience company and no connection to wall power to charge in a reasonable amount of time? Also the roam only works with S2 app so if you have an existing SONOS S1 environment the Roam wont work. Not a big deal if you convert all your existing environment to S2 but if you have lots of SONOS devices that wont work on S1 it is a disaster. The coexistence of S1 and S2 was glitchy in my experience. The other issue I found was anytime I went form one home to another like a friends the Roam got confused. It keep searching for the wi-fi connection that it had a password for and it seemed to override the bluetooth connection. The product really need a pocket instruction manual. It was suppose to make different sounds during setup which it never did. There were lots of simple user issues that I had to call support on which I shouldn't of had to do if the on-line documentation had a simple cheat sheet. Overall the speaker sound was great but due to all of the other user experience stuff I decided to return the product as my frustration with operation grew.
