Customers are saying

Customers recognize the Roam Smart Portable Speaker's impressive sound quality, portability, and surprisingly large sound for its compact size. Many appreciate its ease of setup and Bluetooth connectivity, along with its water resistance for outdoor use. However, some users point to inconsistencies in battery life and occasional difficulties with charging. A few also mention that the volume could be improved and that the price point may be high for some consumers.

Buyer Beware the Dreaded Amber Light of Death

The speaker is great when it works. However, there is a known issue where the speaker will not charge. The bottom light stays orange while charging but will not turn on. I own two Sonos Roams and this happened to the other one as well. Unfortunately, the second one is outside the warranty period so Sonos will not replace it, even after a series of diagnostic tests with them stating it is defective. I use the Sonos wireless charger & Sonos charging brick. This happened with Sonos OEM products. Not sure I'll purchase a new one to replace this one. Do your research online as this is a known issue. How Sonos is managing it is not in loyal customers best interest in my opinion. Buyer beware. Purchased Oct 2021 & stopped working Nov 2022.

Its honestly the best sounding speaker when it isnt dead! This batterry life is terrible, I will charge it all night and then the morning pack it for the trip whatever we are going and as soon as we get there, I try to turn it on and its dead, any button you touch turns the speak on or activates it something, honestly dont waste your money, its just a paper weight at times.

Small speakers like this are a dime a doozen, but what makes this one stand apart from the rest, is it's wifi capability to connect to just about any streaming service you happen to subscribe to and then allow you to command it with voice activation, to play what you want. from where you want. Using your Google assistant or Siri, you can basically talk to your Sonos Roam and treat like ( just about every other smart speaker in your home) with the added bonus of it using all of your streaming choices. There's even a SONOS station to chose from & the option for bluetooth connectivity, so you can play music straight from your phone. I can say, right off the bat, it is water resistent. I dunked this baby in a big bowl of water, while playing music at the time, and it continued to play on. The sound is decent, for its size and it also links to any other SONOS speaker you may have around the house to make your flat thump. Truth though, if you already have one of the larger, more powerful speakers, there's really no reason to get this one. Again, the sound quality isn't bad, but it's also not great. It will, however, do it's best to adapt to the environment to push out te best sound it can, for that space. And that's fine for small spaces, but nothing any other much more affordable, bluetooth speaker can't do. The color options are a greyish/black & a I will be dingy really quickly, white. The battery life is, for lack of pulling punches, all out trash and it can only be charged using approved chargers, so keep your puppies away from this thing. I wanted to see something different with speaker, but all I got was a mediocre smart speaker that costs way too much. I can't recommend this to anyone. There are just far too many, much better, options available.

Speaker sounds great! Size is great too! All is great for about a 9 months. This was my 2nd one and I really liked the ability to use multiple for true stereo experience. However, just out of warranty and the unit would no longer charge. Tried different charger and charging brick. Nothing worked. Sonos would only only push their monthly subscription plan to extend the warranty. The monthly fee seems excessive given the higher price for their products. Sounds great but buyer beware it may not live beyond the warranty.

Way more complicated than it needs to be

I wanted to love this and thought I would but I ended up returning it. I'll explain why but first let me list the pros. The sound is good for its size. It's nice that it's water proof. It's easy to old and feels good in your hand. The design looks great. Now the cons. The on-off button is really difficult to master. That sounds crazy but it's true. Sometimes you press it and nothing happens. If you hold it for different lengths of time different things happen (full power off, connect to bluetooth...) but I couldn't find a clear explanation anywhere of this. You'd think an on-off switch would be simpler. I also found that if I didn't full power off (which requires holding the on-off switch for five seconds) the battery would drain completely overnight. So every time I turned it off I had to hold the switch for five seconds, which was annoying. But the biggest problem I had was with connectivity. I'm in an admittedly unusual circumstance in that we set our wi-fi to automatically disconnect at night to keep our kids from spending all of their time online. That meant that each day I'd have to go through a complex process to reconnect the Roam to our network. I tried to set the speaker to be blue-tooth only but that's not possible. It needs to be connected to wi-fi first before you can connect it to bluetooth. And while the sound is good for it's size, it's smaller than it needs to be. I wanted to upgrade from a Bose SoundLink Mini II, which came out way back in 2016. The SoundLink Mini II is slightly bigger but I actually think it sounds noticeably better than the Roam. So in short, I think if you're a Sonos person and plugged in to their system and want to add something portable, maybe this would be good for you. But if you're primarily focused on listening over bluetooth I think there are a lot of options that are better.

Don't Buy - Battery Life Worst on the Market

The sound quality is decent, comparable to a UE Boom. But there is one ginormous flaw that is an absolute dealbreaker: the battery life is HORRIBLE. Worse than ANYTHING on the market. I bought two to put into my two showers in the house. Listened to a podcast on one for 15 minutes while getting ready yesterday and by this morning it was dead. And the other one in a shower that wasn't even used (!) was DEAD by the afternoon. My UE Booms hold their charge for WEEKS at a time in between uses. There is a serious design flaw with this speaker and it should ONLY be used for single-day trips to the beach or pool and literally nothing else.

One of the worst portable speakers I've ever owned. Maybe I have a defective one? List of pros and cons below, I wouldn't buy this again. Cons: The bass is fuzzy. The battery life is incredibly bad. A couple hours of listening and it needs a recharge. By the way, trying to play music while it recharges from a low level is impossible. I also had a two-month period when the speaker would not charge or power on. It is also incredibly difficult to connect new bluetooth devices. I've had many small gatherings where people have given up trying to connect to play music. Even as I write, the darn thing is flashing a red light for the first time, which I've googled is a "fault condition." Geez this thing is horrible. Pros: very portable and seemingly durable. It has Alexa

While most of the other Sonos products are pretty good, this one fails to meet expectations. The first time i used it on a bike ride the volume shot down to zero and continues to exibit this problem. Also the power button sucks and is not easily manipulated. The sonos roam seems to always power up when charging as well even after powering off which is super annoying. You can't adjust the bass and treble on bluetooth either which sucks to. Sound is sub par for the price as well. I hope sonos is able to remedy these problems with software updates. For now I'm stuck with it unfortunately.

When it worked, it worked great! Great full sound and great Bluetooth range. After about a month, it would no longer charge or turn on. I tried several different charging blocks and outlets. Tried all of the different resets I could find and still nothing. Pretty expensive for a 1 month use speaker.

The sound on this thing is great. It’s got good bass, clear overall sound, it’s nicely designed with a pleasing aesthetic and feature set… But the battery life is unacceptably bad. I had to return it because the battery would drain 30-50% each day even without it being used. My old UE Boom would last weeks, if not months on a single charge with minimal use. This thing NEEDS to be charged every 2-3 days, even if you aren’t using it, and that just doesn’t work for me. Ended up replacing it with a JBL Flip which has been much better, despite the sound quality not being quite as good (though still good.)

I’ve had my speaker for just over a year (a year and 4 days) and its battery has already died. Will not charge. I don’t use very often, but when I do, I don’t charge it until it’s dead. The last two months of using it, it would die after just a few hours of use rather than a few days. It’s unfortunate it didn’t last long with even mild use. When I would use it in my office, I would connect to our tv (maybe 15ft away around the corner) and the audio cracks in and out as if it has a bad connection. I could get over the cracking despite its annoyance, and until a couple months ago, I’ve had a great time using it. The battery dying has me giving it a ‘fair’ review.

In theory Sonos speakers a pretty cool but the roam speakers aren’t worth the purchase. Had mine for less than 2 years and now it no longer works. Was told by Sonos by Sonos that they only warranty them for a year and that after 18 months they are known to not work if they are on the charger too long. Sad because I have a Bose Bluetooth wireless speaker that I’ve had for around 20 years and that still works fine.

Sound is fantastic - we actually bought two of them! But we stopped using them because they are so finicky with bluetooth - plan on a 5 minute ordeal every time you want to listen to anything through the speakers through bluetooth - by the time I get it paired, I am out of the mood to listen to music. We got the expensive Bose one that looks like a little coffee pot and it pairs through bluetooth immediately - no hassle - but sound quality is not quite as good as the Roam (even though the Bose is much louder)

Have not had this long and it is losing connection and won't even go into repairing mode, regardless of how many times I try holding down the power button. The location of the power button, which is the only button on the device that is responsible for a multitude of functions, is completely awkward to get to every time you need to power the device on. The only reason it didn't \get 1 star is because the sound quality is pretty good.

The roam sounds great but overall its not a good user experience. The wireless charger is a separate purchase. You don't need it but its a nice to have, But the device will sometimes die while its sitting on the wireless charger. Which you need to plug in a USB-C cable to the back to get it to initially charge back up sometimes. The battery life on this is terrible. Using it off the charger will get your a couple of hours maybe around 4-5 from my experience. Everytime I try and pair it to bluetooth I usually need to reboot the device a few times until I can get it pair/connect correctly. I have had mine for a year and it is currently in a state where it shows its charging but it isn't and I can't power it on or do anything with it. This seems to be common looking at the support community forum.

I purchased this same product three times in one month. All three speakers would not hold a charge. I was very disappointed because my entire home is filled with SONOS speakers. This speaker is not cheap so I expected the usual performance and ease to operate that I am use to.
