Customers recognize the Roam Smart Portable Speaker's impressive sound quality, portability, and surprisingly large sound for its compact size. Many appreciate its ease of setup and Bluetooth connectivity, along with its water resistance for outdoor use. However, some users point to inconsistencies in battery life and occasional difficulties with charging. A few also mention that the volume could be improved and that the price point may be high for some consumers.

Good sound, so-so battery life
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Sounds pretty great and Wi-Fi/Airplay streaming is much more reliable than Bluetooth. Just wish it had better battery life compared to Bluetooth speakers.

Volume is low
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I expected more from Sonos, the sound quality is unsatisfactory and the volume is low, my advice is don't waste your money. Three stars from me because easily connects and work well with other Sonos devices.

Sonos Roam
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Setup with out WiFi is impossible for the speaker, so don’t buy it on your way to the beach and expect to turn it on, pair and go. Sound quality and battery life is great, but lost points for setup and app use.

Nice design but weak in sound.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Yea, sorry not what i expected from Sonos. Not loud enough. Not used to a speaker been so tiny in sound and bass. Had to return. Used to big sound from the play 5s at home! Just not good enough for me.

When it works it works.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The sounds quality is what you expect from a Sonos product. If you haven't experienced that, then the sound is excellent. The problems I have with the Roam are: if I'm watching a show, for example, the sound will just cut out when another episode plays. It's happened if I switched from a show to music, or video on YouTube. The only fix is to turn off the Bluetooth and turn it back on. The power button has a terrible feel - like it's hard to press or stuck. And because the Roam sometimes doesn't make a connection sound or the light doesn't light up you may think the power button isn't working. I've found that if I double-press the power button it will turn on but I still have to manually connect via BT otherwise I'll be waiting some time for a connection. I took it with me on a trip and the Sonos app is useless because it needs to be on the home network to even see the battery percentage of the the Roam. The physical design and sound quality is really good but only when it actually works.

Decent speaker, some concerns
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this to replace my Bose Soundlink III which is almost 7 years old. This speaker was well reviewed in many places so I thought I’d give it a try. I have to say I was shocked that it doesn’t work out of the box and requires you to start giving Sonos your data before you can pair it. Once you’ve created an account with Sonos via app/email and connected to Wi-Fi you can then use it. The app seems feature rich and well designed and once connected you can then not only use the speaker with your phone, but even pair your new Bluetooth speaker with any Bluetooth device! What a concept! Pros: Sound is good can auto tune to its environment to improve quality using built in mic Can pair with other units for more sound Compact and light Physical play/pause and volume controls Cons Expensive App requirement to use a Bluetooth speaker was infuriating to me No hardware/Bluetooth enabled battery gauge (only works through the app) Overall sound quality seems about the same to me as my 7 year old Bose but this speaker is much more compact. I wish the app could be circumvented for those not concerned with it. This speaker is capable of advanced voice functions through Amazon Alex or Google and an always on Wi-Fi connection. I was not looking for any of these features and in fact disabled Wi-Fi and deleted the app as soon as I got the device pairable over Bluetooth; my ISP has data caps so I try to limit the number of devices always connected (however insignificant they may seem). Lastly my impression is skewed by my use case so if the Wi-Fi, smart assistant, and fully featured app appeal to you, or you already have the ecosystem I think you may be very happy with this device.

5W Power Brick WONT Charge Speakers
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really like the actual speaker - sounds great & I like that it can be used in the shower & by the pool. I have a pair and setting up stereo is pretty easy and they sound even better together. However, as someone who is pretty tech savvy, to spend hours trying to figure out WHY my speakers aren't charging (with old 5W iPhone bricks - ones that most people will have) is kind of ridiculous. SOLUTION; maybe Sonos can either include the necessary power brick required to charge the speaker or inform customers before they buy. Never in my life have I received a product that is not fully functional out of the box, especially at this price. Actually quite mind boggling. Fortunately I had a couple of spare 12W iPad bricks that seem to be charging the speakers.

Power brick not included.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The speaker has good sound. Basic setup is fairly easy. However, if you have multiple Sonos devices, setting up group play is more complex. Now my gripe. The speaker is well over cost of other speaker on the market. You would think fir 169.00 they would include power brick. I have iOS ind the power brick does not charge the phone. I am thinking about returning just on principle. Over priced and does not even include what is needed to make speaker operational.

What a bummer.
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The sound is amazing. I bought a pair and I will be returning them however. The battery life is terrible. If I charge them to 100% and don’t use them for a day when I go to use them the battery is at 76%. If I use them for 20 minutes, the battery drops to 55%. There is no way you can play them for 10 hours like it claims. Totally defeats the purpose of being a portable speaker. Also, I have to set them up to stereo pair every time. Once I set it, it should stay paired. I literally have to pick the left and right one each time. This is my first experience with Sonos and I’m pretty bummed. If I wanted to have it plugged in all the time, I’d have bought a Sonia one. The sound quality was great, but for the battery life these are over priced by $100.

Good sonos speaker but it could be better.
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Nice speaker for the size. I have my house full of sonos speakers so getting this was a must. I did expect better sound because they make the best smart speakers. It will travel good and is waterproof so I will get plenty of use with it. I do think its a bit overpriced. Hopefully they build on this model and make improvements to the sound.

Good, not great.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The best use case is for current Sonos owners who want a small speaker to move around the house with. It sounds good next to other speakers and when you balance the volume you can sort of get a stereo effect if you have rooms with other speakers present. I use this mostly in my bedroom and office where each have a single One. This adds to the sound in those rooms. I also use it in the shower, which has made the ritual of showering much more enjoyable and relaxing. Out of home, I use headphones, and it's winter where I am, so I haven't had any outdoor gatherings to "DJ", so not sure about the out-of-home / social experience of using this yet. I do not recommend this if you do not already have, or plan to have additional Sonos speakers at home. the value prop and performance is weak and overpriced as a single speaker. Pros: - size and weight, very portable. lighter and smaller than my JBL - Integration w/ my existing Sonos system - sound quality is pretty good all things considered. it sounds clear and crisp, and the fact that it is weak in the low end isn't bothersome. as long as your expectations are in the right place, you won't be disappointed by how it sounds overall. Cons: Controls, pairing, overall usability, and functionality - Many times activating this speaker with music already playing will crash the system. For example, I have a One playing music, I hold the play button on the Roam and sometimes it works, but other times, it kills all the music and unlinks the other speakers that may be playing at the same time. Then I have to get into the app, reselect the music, and wait for it to pick up. its just not as smooth as the wired speakers. - BATTERY LIFE IS THE PITS. making it not a good speaker to take out on a trip. Bluetooth battery MIGHT be better, but I haven't been able to quantify the difference between the two - wouldn't take it to the beach, the pool, the patio, etc. it's not loud enough by itself and I'd only get 1-2 hours on the battery. - volume when paired with other speakers in home: when you adjust the volume on the speaker, it adjusts for each speaker that is playing. not a bad thing, but there are many times where the other speakers are fine and just this one needs to be adjusted. You have to go into the app to adjust this. - takes too long to get up and running. With the JBL's you play something on your phone, turn on the speaker and it pairs and plays almost immediately. with this, I have to go through MANY more steps AFTER picking music because of fumbling with the Sonos app in addition to fumbling with Sonos/Apple - So far I have been unsuccessful with getting the voice controls to work. one day I may figure this out.

Disappointed and underwhelmed
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Was very excited to receive the new Roam, but ended up underwhelmed. The reviews I read and listened to did state that the speaker does not get loud and the low end/bass is not great. I should have stopped there as that is true. It does offer clear/clean sound, but for $169 I really expected more. If you turn the bass up, nothing really happens but muddy the sound. I believe this product is very overpriced. Yes, I love that it connects to the other Sonos, but I think they need to go back and reevaluate this offering or significantly lower the price. This should be priced at no more than $100 and they have room to develop another larger portable speaker that performs better for a sub $200 price point. I do like the size and the portability of the unit, but will stick to my JBL Charge 3 and Flip 5 for transporting around and on the boat. I am considering the MOVE to use on patio, since this won't work for me, just having a hard time with the price.

Not sure if I would purchase again
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this speaker after having an LG Bluetooth speaker that had decent sound. Was hoping for something with a more refined sound and a little smaller and therefore portable than the LG. The sonos roam is quite light and easy to transport around. Sound through the speaker js great. However if I listen to the speak two hours a week, it loses significant charge. I previously used the LG in the same fashion and charged only once a month. This is quite a disappointment as I have other Sonos products and expected more for this speaker. Additionally the sonos app can be cumbersome at times and hard to navigate.

Roam
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The sound is great. It is very light weight and wonderful to take any where. I gave it 3 stars because it requires that you plug it into your computer to fully charge it. I originally plugged it into a regular outlet the way I do my iPhone and iPad and it sent me a notice that it wasn’t fully charging. It told me to plug it into my computer for a full charge and I did and it charged just right. What if you don’t have a computer handy to charge it? I think it’s impractical.

Iffy
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’ve had this for a few weeks now, not very happy with the connectivity, it random drops the connection (bluetooth & wi-fi) every other time I use it. It sometimes drops bluetooth connection when my phone is sitting less than a foot away from the speaker. Other than connectivty issues, this speaker sounds great for it’s size.

Disappointing range and volume.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Roam is disappointing for a Sonos. I have the Arc, Sub and ones and they sound great. The roam does not punch the highs and is very limited on volume for outdoor use. It sounds fine for casual use in a small room or for just background music. I bought it because it is one of the few that can stream Wi-Fi music. Outdoors I just use it as a remote to control my whole house system driven by Alexa.

Sounds great, but...
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I REALLY want to love this speaker. The sound is fantastic. The only issue I have with it, and it's bad enough to cost 2 stars, is that it CONSTANTLY loses connection to my network. This pretty consistently requires a power cycle of the speaker to get it back on-line. No other electronics in my office have this issue. It's a real shame, without these frustrations, the speaker would be simply excellent.

Great sound, but horrible battery life!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First and foremost it’s a really great sounding speaker for it’s size, but that’s about it for me! Now the bad. It has horrible battery life, I was only getting 3 days out of it before it needed to be recharged. It lost a lot of battery in sleep mode for some reason. After first setting up device for true tuning, I had microphone off as well as voice assistants…and still had horrible battery life. Maybe after updates it will be fixed. Also, for the people that want to use Apple Airplay, another strange thing is you need to open up the Sonos app to wake up the Roam before you can actually use Airplay. If you are playing a song like normal then go to your Airplay devices you will not see the Roam because it will be in sleep mode. Which for me kinda defeats the purpose of having Airplay. Last but not least, Sonos should have made the play/pause & volume buttons the same white color (black color for the white roam) as the Sonos logo that’s on the speaker, because they are hard to see. I returned the Sonos Roam and purchased the Marshall Emberton…and I’m very happy with it.
