Customers are saying

Customers recognize the Roam Smart Portable Speaker's impressive sound quality, portability, and surprisingly large sound for its compact size. Many appreciate its ease of setup and Bluetooth connectivity, along with its water resistance for outdoor use. However, some users point to inconsistencies in battery life and occasional difficulties with charging. A few also mention that the volume could be improved and that the price point may be high for some consumers.

I mainly use this as my computer speaker. I had a Bose mini Soundlink II, but it has finally died. RIP. I wanted to have a desktop speaker that was roughly the same size but with equal sound. Overall the sound is pretty good, but the Bose sound much better with deeper bass. As for the Sonos app. It just stinks. I have a pair of Sonos One, Move (DO NOT BUY) , and now Roam and there's always an issue with the app not recognizing them. Even now with the Roam. It still can't connect and I've tried everything.

Familiar Sonos Sound in a portable speaker

Overall, I am very happy with the Sonos Roam. It sounds great with a nice depth in the audio quality that you don't usually get in Bluetooth speakers of this size. We have 5 Sonos Ones placed throughout our house and the Roam sounds just like the One. It's just a heck of a lot smaller and more portable. I'm using the Roam mostly as an everyday speaker in a small home office and I really appreciate the sound and ease of use when using Spotify and the Roam. I can go back and forth between my phone and laptop seamlessly to change music adjust volume etc. In a large group setting others are able to also access the device in Spotify, so DJ'ing can be done pretty easily. Because it is Wifi enabled, I can access this speaker along with my other speakers and link them up as necessary. I have two do things I don't like. The vagueness of the power button. I wish it was more mechanical or had an audio beep or something to let you know it was on. Half of the time I can't tell you if it is on or not when trying to turn it on. Secondly, I wish the USB-c plug it came with, was a magnetic connector, not a plug-in to the device. The plug is a 90-degree plug that gives it a nice low-profile look when plugged in, but this is the same design as many of the magnetic plugs. Because it looks like it is a magnetic plug, I try to "unplug" it like a magnetic plug. When I add a wireless charging pad, then this will be a non-issue. Color: I purchased the Best Buy "white". Sonos calls it "lunar white". Don't be confused, it's really just a light gray. I think the Roam is a good speaker for someone who wants great sound out of a small speaker with the advantage of it being portable and durable. I think it excels in small group or solo listening sessions where background noise can't overtake the device. If you expect a premium sound out of your Bluetooth speaker and are okay with a premium price, then the Roam could be a good speaker for you. I plan to use it every day in my office and it will be my grab-and-go speaker for outdoor adventures.

this speaker is small - about the size of a stapler. Sounds great! Doesn't play loud, but loud enough for a single speaker for good quality ambient music. Integrates into the Sonos ecosystem perfectly. If you don't need a portable speaker for the shower and don't need to integrate it into the Sonos ecosystem, you can probably get a louder sound for the money. Features are great. I'm torn if I really have a use case for the Roam, but I'll keep it anyway. I would love if it was able to become a conference speaker/mic for my mobile phone.

Much like the One, these are excellent as additions but not on their own. I bought two for my pool and stereo paired them. Because the Sonos sub in the living room is so incredible and The base carries outside, they work perfectly. But don’t expect a miracle speaker if you want to take one to the beach.

The speakers sounds good but voice response is not quite too great yet however the male computer’s voice sounds really nice though . Also, at times device struggles to connect to Bluetooth and WiFi. Could also be difficult to setup too.

If you’re here to know if the sound is worth the price without taking the features and the Sonos ecosystem into account the answer is: No. But if you’re considering the Roam you have an understanding and appreciation of Sonos and it’s products, and as part of their ecosystem and it’s features is it worth it? The answer is Yes. Pros: It’s full featured considering it’s a small speaker. -Sonos integration. -Smart assistants -AirPlay 2 -Waterproof (not resistant). -Active Sound calibration. -Loud for its size. Cons: -There’s one HUGE flaw, and it’s why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. If you’re in you’re way to a party, the beach, a hike or anywhere and you pick up a Roam on the way, you CANNOT use it right out of the box, not even for Bluetooth, needs to be configured with your system in the app first in your network. This could be probably fixed with software updates down the line, but for now, this speaker out of the box is useless without all the necessary things to set it up the first time, and that’s really upsetting for its price. -No 3.5 mm audio jack (I’m never going to use it or need it but I’m sure there’s people that still feels this is a dealbreaker still in 2021) -Power button is too stiff, lacks “clickyness”, if it wasn’t for the led lights at times you won’t know if your pushing hard enough until you see the indicator. -Sound quality shines at the mid-volume range, with all highs, mids and lows being clear, but the louder you push the volume (75%+), the lows start to fall off and even though the sounds is loud and clear, the trade off is almost not worth it, for music without a lot of lows this wouldn’t be a problem. This was tested with Loudness control Enabled. With all things considered, this is a great speaker for the right buyer, for me, the more than decent audio quality in combination of the features and Sonos integration make more than enough sense and make this a no brainer, and after using it and testing it, I’m happy with this purchase, and will keep this and continue to push it to its limits, will update this review in 6 months to see if it holds up after all.

Just got this today to be able to listen to XM Radio in my office and on my deck. Ultimately the connection between the Sonos app and the Alexa app was pretty easy. Using it as an Alexa device has also been a little seemless...except...when I ask to play Sirius XM it says to go into my Alexa app and add the service. I have already done this. So, I went into my XM app and selected it as a device and then it played. Its a little wonky. Sound quality is good and and clear and the footprint of the device is small. I am a new Sonos user and I think the software has some ways to go. But it should continue to advance every few months. I do think it is over priced. If this was $99 then its a no-brainer. If its $129.99 then I would still pick it up. If you have a Best Buy coupon or rewards certificates then that is also a good way to go. I do not intend to move this outside my home so I did not test the durability. But it seems to be very dynamic. Thus, I took off a star for the software and the price. But its still recommended.

I have been waiting for this portable speaker to be released. I have Bose, JBL, HK in the portable speaker pool. To compare with this new add to the stable. I am very impressed by the size of the speaker since it is such a small package and such good sound. I will say that the sound quality is pretty good tends to mix some of the lows like a Bose and highs like my HK. The best description that fits is that this speaker has "presence". It definitely does not appear to be able to have the power/volume of some of the other speakers and the battery life seems a bit less than the other speakers. This speaker is great for a smaller room or office. But since I am familiar with the Sonos ecosystem I knew what I was getting in to with this purchase.

Great sound for its size! Very portable compared to the Sonos Move and would recommend Roam for trips to the park/traveling and keeping Move home for outdoor use. Roam is light with crisp clear sound and reasonable bass for its size. Move is heavy. Roam 40% volume is equal to about 10% volume of the Sonos One. I rexommend Roam, but it should have came with the charging block with it’s price point

I have two of these. I love the fact that you can pair multiple speakers together to give you a louder surround sound. The sound quality is very nice and my only complaint is that it is not as loud as I would like it to be. I still recommend it to anyone looking for a good quality transportable, waterproof speaker that can pair with the rest of your Sonos ecosystem.

This is my shower speaker as it’s waterproof. Works super well and can get quite loud. The app is very easy and useful for expanding upon that. Bass and treble are the two adjustments and loudness is an on off switch. I prefer my Bose revolve+ II, but when they’re not charged this is a great alternative.

Wifi and bluetooth compatible. Nice feature adaps sounds settings to the room and its noticable. Worth the money in my opinion

I have about a dozen Sonos devices throughout my house which I've acquired over the years. I've been looking for a portable bluetooth speaker to take with us on vacations. We tend to rent homes with a pool and want to bring a decent waterproof speaker that can be easily thrown into a backpack. The Roam sounds very good at low to medium-high volumes. It starts to fall apart quickly at anything above that and it does lack the clarity of the One speakers. That said, it has nice bass to it and it's perfectly acceptable for a portable speaker. The buttons are easy to use and the battery life is fine for its use case. We have two of these - one black and one white and I suspect the white one will be the travel device due to the white color reflecting the heat of the sun a bit better. When home, these are found all throughout the house. Showers, porch, bedrooms, garage, etc. Quite easy to pick up and listen on the go as roaming about the house, puttering, cleaning, etc. All in all, very nice devices. Nice enough that I picked up two of them. The JBL competition such as the Charge 5 may have a bit stronger sound but if you are already invested in the Sonos ecosystem these little speakers make quite a bit of sense.

I wanted to buy the Sonos Move but the price tag was too high and too bulky. I just needed something portable with enough volume to use in a small office area or outside (i.e. beach, gardening, camping, golf). This little device does the trick and is the perfect size for the person on the go! I love you can charge it via USB C or certain Qi chargers. It's water proof so no fear when it rains or near a pool. I've heard reviews that some people use it in the shower. It is easy to set-up and works via Wi-Fi or bluetooth. When in bluetooth mode I wish you see how much battery life is left on your mobile device. Maybe I'm missing something. It only displays when you are on WiFi. Not a big deal because it seems to last a long time. I already have a Sonos eco system so it compliments my other speakers. I was able to pair it up with one of my newer Sonos One speakers (Alexa version). I only wish the price was bit lower. I think the sweet spot is $129 range; however, I was lucky to purchase it open box. I think Best Buy (and Sonos) may have promo deals in the near future. The reason I gave it 4 out 5 is because it did not include a plug. Overall, the setup was easy to do and it works seamlessly.

The Sonos Roam is a compact yet powerful portable speaker. Its sleek design and durable build make it ideal for on-the-go use. The sound quality is impressive, delivering a rich and balanced audio experience. The ability to connect seamlessly with other Sonos devices adds versatility to your audio setup. While the battery life could be longer, the quick charging feature helps mitigate this concern. Sometimes it can lose connection and need to be reset. Overall, the Sonos Roam is a solid choice for those seeking a portable speaker with excellent sound quality and the convenience of the Sonos ecosystem.

Great Sound - Somewhat Frustrating Setup

So far so good. A couple of things to be aware of. If you have older Sonos products and are using the S1 app, you have to jump through a few hoops to get Roma up and running. You have to completely remove your old system, create the new one and then re-create your old one. That's the bad. Now the good. The features are what you come to expect from Sonos. Once setup playing music was super easy and what I was used to. The sounds quality is good for such a small speaker. I used to use a JBL Flip4 and this has much better sound. I have mostly been using it on my network but connected Bluetooth to see how that works (not obvious how to connect - hold the back button until the light turns blue). Once connected worked great as I would expect a Bluetooth speaker to work. I almost returned it after my frustration with trying to get it to work with my old system but I am glad I did not. I would recommend this for anyone who has an existing Sonos system. I am not sure it is worth the extra cost VS other speakers if you are not already in the Sonos ecosystem.

Very high quality sound! The wifi connectivity is very handy as you can connect to the speaker as soon as you get home automatically. My only two caveats that warrant 4 instead of 5 stars are 1) the battery life is not amazing and it drains relatively fast if WiFi is enabled, and 2) the maximum volume could also be a little louder. However this is a very tiny, lightweight, and amazingly portable speaker producing very crisp sound sound!
