Customers are saying

Customers have good things to say about the sound quality, Bluetooth connectivity, and ease of use of the STRDH190 stereo receiver. Many appreciate its affordable price and the inclusion of a phono input for turntables. While some users mentioned the bass could be improved, and the volume control could be more refined, the overall feedback is overwhelmingly positive. The receiver's compact size and straightforward setup are also frequently praised.

Horrible CS -Sent wrong product and then it broke

Best Buy sent me the wrong receiver and then it broke after 6 months. When I called, their customer service said it is out of the return window and to reach out to the manufacturer. The manufacturer won’t help because Best Buy sent me the wrong thing and the receipts don’t match. The worst Customer Service experience imaginable. Avoid Best Buy at all costs and buy from a company that cares about its customers

My guess is nobody at the store this receiver was returned to looked in the box. The styrofoam that protects the receiver during transit was one side of the receiver broken in half just stuffed in the box along with the plastic bag they wrap the receiver with at the factory. The manual was in the box, but the antenna wasn’t. So i can’t use the radio which is why i bought it. The receiver has no power. Volume setting turned up to 40 and still needs to go higher. There is a footprint of a toddler on top of the receiver. He wasn’t happy with this receiver either?!

Bad Open Box - Unit Did Not Work

Let me preface this with that I've had really good experiences buying open box from Best Buy. I've gotten two Sony TVs, a UHD-DVD player and other things that might as well have been new. But - lemme tell you - this was not one of them. The receiver arrived in the box upside with a couple of ripped in half styrofoam pieces for packaging. There was a random RCA cable, presumably from the previous owner, attached and the FM antenna wire had been jammed into its' slot, broken off and was unable to be removed. And then, upon plugging it in, the amplifier didn't work...at all. Supposedly this was vetted by Best Buy staff as it was rated "Open Box Good" but very clearly no one had even bothered to look at it since it was originally returned before. Can't give a rating on the amplifier as it didn't work so one star for the poor open box experience.

I originally had purchased this and ended up returning it within a week. My unit may have been faulty though. Seems like Sony cheaped out with the power supply on these and reviews online mention it being a common failure point. When turning my unit on, it would hum very audibly (louder than my gaming pc at idle running Cooler Master SickleFlow 120s), and you would also feel the vibration when touching the unit. The volume control knob was quite difficult to turn, I wasn't expecting the feel of a nice Denon unit, but I expect it to not have a significant amount of resistance, the input control knob wasn't too much different. Despite this, my unit didn't appear damaged. It gets worse though, I had bought this to replace a Legrand amplifier which was faulty and had sound bleeding between the channels (causing distortion). Even with that issue, my speakers sounded worse with the Sony, just horribly muddy, no highs or lows, just mids; they're not fancy either, just 8ohm 40w ones (the Parts Express Overnight Sensations DIY kit). There's a similarly priced Yamaha that should be better, though I went for an Onkyo TX-SR393 instead and have been extremely happy with it, all issues I had with this Sony are non-existent with that, even providing an accurate frequency response.

Hi vince, We regret to hear about the issues you had with this receiver and it had to be returned. This is usually not the case for our stereo receiver nor the experience we want you to have.

Trying out the troubleshooting steps on this link are some of the steps that we recommend to resolve the humming or buzzing issue on this receiver.

      https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/audio-components-receivers-amplifiers/str-dh190/articles/00027601

      https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/audio-components-receivers-amplifiers/str-dh190/articles/00028883

Also, the knobs should move freely and not be overly tight.

If all you hear from the speakers is static or distorted sound, there could be an incorrect setting or there may be a problem with the speakers. Following the steps on the link below should resolve the issue.

Weak Receiver that Lacks a Powerful Sound

I bought this Sony receiver based on the reviews and it was on sale. Sony claims 100w per channel but I could immediately tell that was not true. I have old school Cerwin Vega speakers and this receiver had trouble powering them. At low volumes, the bass would drop out completely. At high volumes, there just wasn't enough headroom or power to sufficiently drive my Cerwin Vega's. Disappointed, I returned this receiver and purchased the Yamaha 200w 2ch Stereo Reciever (model #R-S202BL) that sounds much better and drives my Cerwin Vegas easily. This Sony stereo receiver is weak, IMO, and does not deliver a powerful sound.

      Hi Gamervibe,

We sincerely regret that you are having an issue with your STR-DH190 within a month of use. This is definitely not the experience we wanted you to have. If you haven't yet, please follow these steps if no sound or only a very low level of sound is heard from specific speakers.

      • Check that the speakers and device are connected correctly and securely.
      • Connect a pair of headphones to the PHONES jack to verify that sound is output from the headphones. If only one channel is output from the headphones, the device may not be connected to the receiver correctly. Check that all of the cables are fully inserted into the jacks on both the receiver and the device. If both channels are output from the headphones, the speaker may not be connected to the receiver correctly. Check the connection of the speaker that is not outputting any sound.
      • Make sure you have connected to both the L and R jacks of an analog device, as analog devices require both L and R jack connections. Use a stereo audio cable (not supplied).

Very disappointed with sound quality while using phono. I purchased this specifically so that I could play my phono on bigger speakers instead of a bluetooth speaker. Sound is VERY distorted when record is playing but if you switch receiver to FM it is clear as a bell. Phono is brand new and plays fine with my old system so it's not the needle, its this receiver.

I purchased the Sony receiver with bluetooth to replace an aging Onkyo receiver. The Sony unit I received was non-working out of the box and Sony tech support was completely non-responsive. Thankfully, Best Buy provided an immediate refund when I dropped off the defective unit at a local store. I ultimately purchased an integrated amp with bluetooth from another manufacturer.

"Open Box - Excellent " was DOA and damaged

Bought this stereo receiver for my 2nd bedroom - it was delivered yesterday. Full retail is 149.99; I opted for an "Open Box - Excellent" model for $122. "Open Box - Excellent " is defined as: "Products in Excellent condition look brand new — with no physical flaws, scratches or scuffs — and include all original parts" Well, let's see. No physical flaws, scratches or scuffs? Nope - has a big ol' dent on the upper back left corner. Includes all original parts? Nope - the FM antenna and instruction manual are missing. And as a bonus, it is Dead On Arrival - it won't even power up. I will be returning this piece of junk as soon as Best Buy opens later this morning.

Avoid this model of Sony Stereo Receivers

This review is one star due to poor quality control from Sony on this receiver. I have recently been through two brand new Sony 2.0 Stereo Receivers (STRDH190). The first one came out of the box with a giant dent in the backside of it. Bestbuy replaced it very quickly by shipping me another one. The second unit appeared fine but the display would not come one. I read up on troubleshooting guides and figured maybe the dimmer or display settings needed to be configured. I was not able to get the display on at all. Factory resetting the unit did not help. My advice stay away from this model.

While the product was received on time, in a pretty box, the nearly 15 year old receiver it was to replace performs better than the what I bought brand new. Utter garbage. My old receiver would over heat and short out. I purchase nearly the exact model to replace the old. I excitedly connect a couple speakers. Power up the receiver, cd player powered up, pushed play....and the sound output was literally that of a pair of old headphones. Head phones not on one's head, but imagine laying the head phones down, turning up volume and walking 20' away. That sound. Utter trash. Nearly 3 weeks since returning and no refund. No wonder the big boxes can't compete w/ Amazon.
