What I was told at the Apple store was IPad Pro is more for making videos or recording  things movies etc. if you don't do these things you don't necessarily need the pro which costs more.

They are very similar devices with a similar price. Main difference is iPad Air has more colors and the pro had a higher refresher rate display.

A new updated iPad Pro will probably come out soon as well, but currently they use the same processor.
