It means it replaces your old phone, without a contract. Manufacturers often place higher prices on phones when customers do not want contracts with the device.

A replacement device means you are not eligible for an upgrade and you are just replacing your current phone. It may also mean you do not want to use your upgrade eligibility and would rather pay full price. And $700 is the u subsidized full price of this phone.

Ouch! You must still be "in contract" on your current device and not eligible for a discounted upgrade? If so you should check with Verizon to see if you can take advantage of their new "pay in installments" plan. Otherwise no way would I pay full retail -- instead check out Gazelle's new "certified used" offerings, CraigsList, etc. -- or wait till you can upgrade at a full discount!

A replacement device is a trade-in to get the money for a new phone, the next one in line. Since you traded in a device, it becomes $700.
