I had a chance to hold both. That's one great benefit of going to Best Buy. I don't need a mini ipad. I want a phone. The XR had a smaller screen, slightly larger than the iPhone 7, which was slightly larger than the iPhone 4 I had first. These all slip right into my pocket. I can easily remove it from my pocket when I'm sitting in the car and put it in the dash phone mount. It's a lot heavier than an iPhone7 and a bit thicker. The XS was similarly constructed, but the size made me turn my attention immediately to the XR. Just try handling the two phones at the store to find out what you prefer. You can try one without the lanyard attached. I put an XR in my pocket for feel before I bought one. The staff are very helpful.

Small screen. Also has a LED screen vs oled screen. Screen on the Xr is crisp and looks great. One camera. If you don't need the larger screen size, go with this over the XS max. You will save money and have a nice phone.
