Yes. The cartridge is the same size it just has more ink in it.

NO. The sales rep made a mistake and gave me 271 for my 281 printer. The cartridges fit, but my printer does not recognize them and gives an error code!

Yes, the XL just means there’s more ink inside.

It will fit the same spot, however, you may still get an error message on your printer.  
The "271" series cannot replace the "281" series....even though the cartridge fits.

It should...the XL just means MORE COPIES per inker as far as I know.

Yes it can. The Canon ink cartridges are made the same way and the only difference is how much ink the cartridges hold. The set-up ink cartridges when you buy a printer look the same on the outside but the ink capacity is small and you'll be buying more ink real soon! Many printer companies will lose money when they sell you a printer but they make their money when they keep selling you ink cartridges for the printer. That is why more people choose to buy bulk ink and refill the cartridges themselves to save money if they do a lot of printing. I buy bulk ink and refill my ink cartridges myself too.
