The AM/FM reference to the updated 29 LTD means the CB radio is now capable of receiving and transmitting on any of the 40 channels using FM. The 29 LTD has a mode select feature that allows operating the radio in AM or the new FM mode. FM offers improved sound quality over AM.

As this radio is used for two way communication, you can listen to it when people are on the airway talking and you can respond to them. If no one is on the channel you won't hear anything.
