Yes the heat sink can be removed. Make sure you touch something metal that’s grounded to discharge ESD. It should largely pull off with little effort. if it gives you trouble, use a razor blade or exactly knife to help. Be gentle as well as the components on the board can be damaged. There will likely be bits left over. Use isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab to remove the remainder.
