I basically run through the original set up, run clean water into an empty container after each use. Rise all parts under clean water.

It sounds like your coffee grinds are too fine and/or tamped too tight.  The machine can't push the water through the coffee.  Try lightening up a bit to coarser grinds and not such a hard tamp.
Of course you will also have to keep the internal parts of the machine clean.  Read your manual for cleaning and descaling info.
