I was originally using this with Edifier powered speakers and it worked fine. It does have a built in preamp which is what I’m using. I haven’t had any issues at all
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes it has a phono preamp. It should work fine with your speakers without anything else. the phono preamp isn't great though. I'm using an Ortofon 2m Red cartridge. there is no reason to spend big bucks on a cartridge for this turntable. It works great but its far from an audiophile grade turntable.

The turntable can output a signal suitable for a low lever phono input or a high level auxiliary (or tape or tuner - those are all high level). The cartridge has a conical stylus, which does not give as good a result, particularly on high frequencies as an elliptical stylus. Denon does not specify who made the cartridge; perhaps they themselves manufactured it. You could easily change the cartridge to something like an Ortofon blue and improve the sound quite a bit. Ellipticals are easier on your records too. This is a good, convenient turntable, performs well for the money involved. The shut-off mechanism is a nice feature. Much better than one of those Audio-Technica 99.00 deals to be sure.
