It allows you to set the oven temp and turns it on to pre - heat and so on. As for using an extension cord. You could but not recommended For safety reasons. Better to have an outlet installed by a licensed electrician. However , Consider this ; The one you are getting has a control knob for the oven. You never have to worry about it ( control panel ) going out. I love mine and the control panel works great. You get an oven light and a clock. You have to decide luxury and a chance it ( control panel ) may go out or plain jane and keep on cooking. If you do upgrade , I would consider a 5 year warranty. I hope I was helpful.
