When you open apps like YouTube or Netflix, there is an icon you tap and it connects. Your phone then becomes a "control". You are not actually playing things from your phone. Just seems that way.

YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now/Go, abc, ESPN, NFL) from your phone and then look for the Cast icon, which is a TV-shaped rectangle with what looks like a Wifi icon on the bottom left corner (Note that the icon may not be placed on the top right as shown in the screenshot; it depends on the app). It will then let you select which Chromecast you would like to connect to. Once you've connected to the TV, look for the show you'd like to watch and play it. The phone display does not need to stay on while watching the show. You can also use the phone as a remote while watching from the TV.
