“I am looking for a wireless device that will basically stream what is on my PC monitor onto my Smart TV in my living room. An hdmi cable would be too long and ugly. Can I use this device for that?”

Yes. You can stream from your PC to the Chromecast using the Google Chrome browser and cast any cast-enabled sites. You will need a smart phone or tablet to initially setup the Chromecast. Once setup, you can enjoy casting using the Google TV with the remote, through your phone's cast-enabled apps or PC.
