I just purchased an Envy printer do I have to use both color and black ink or can I just use black ink to print null

You don't have to use both HP color & black ink. You can use either one, depending on your needs. I usually use the HP black cartridge.

I love my HP Envy 5660 printer for printing & scanning documents.

I don't have an Epson printer, however my experience with past Epson and current HP printers is that the devices rely on both print cartridges. You run out of color, you could switch to black use only and the device wont work. And the reverse will definitely not work.

Your printer should have 2 trays for black and color ink,if your using only black and white use black ink..but for color it needs both cartridges

your printer can be set on black and white, but if you wish to copy a item that has some color and you want it copied proper use both.

You don't have to change the both cartridges together anymore. you can change the black ink only and just leave the color cartridge installed. You can print without any issues.

you can use just black in to print. on the front of the printer you should be able to select the black over the color even when printing color documents.
