You will need a landline for the fax.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. To fax without a landline, you would normally want to use a software solution. The fax option discussed for the printer is a hardware solution, you plug a phone line into the printer and it answers the call, broadcasts a fax signal, negotiates with the fax machine on the other end (using audio noise) and sends or receives a fax. So to use VOIP, which you can, you must have service, through a computer, custom box like magic jack, or modem, that manages a physical phone jack or line with standard phone protocols (audio noise and voice) that you can then connect to the printer/fax. If you want to use IP (internet protocol), normally you just send files like pdf's etc, but it is of course as you say possible to use VOIP to make phones (and faxes) travel over the internet for part of the trip.
