Technically no. Display port is larger then mini port. It is a rectangle with a notch out of one corner.

Same signal, different plug. You can find an adapter that can connect one to the other.

No. I have an Apple Cinema Display with a MiniDisplayPort connector only, that I wanted to plug in when I upgraded to new graphics cards. These two connectors are very different things. I did find an adaptor, but not at Best Buy. Had to order it online.

No. Different sizes. Makes more space for laptops, then that of desktops. With bigger monitors, desktops are preferable of normal size Display Ports feeding signals.
