• You don't have to use the cleanbase you can get just charging base that will charge the device and manually empty the Roomba.

• Hello Slim, If you want the self-emptying feature and have the I7+, yes the Clean Base will be the standard charging station. You can always just purchase a standard I7 and use the normal Home Base without the self-emptying feature.
