The phono/line switch is for telling the speakers if the attached device, for this we will say record/turntable is being attached, needs amplification or not. Phono, tells the speakers the record player needs the amplification and line tells it that it does not. The second part of your question is no, they cannot be attached to a receiver. The point of these speakers is to avoid a receiver. If you want a speaker for receiver look for "passive" monitor. For an example sake, Klipsch does model numbers like this Powered R-41PM and non-powered R-41M. So any speaker that says powered is not compatible with a receiver.
