I had the same question and when I contacted support they tried to tell me that the web site was displaying the input power not the output power. In my humble opinion, this is BS. The reality is that the web site is just plain wrong. This is indeed a 1200 watt unit. I tried to convince them to make the change but they could have cared less. To be honest, 1200 watts for a microwave is more than enough and I have been extremely happy with this product. But BestBuy should certainly change the information on the site.
