“I just bought an MPOW Iron virtual 7.1 gaming headset, but the microphone doesn’t work with my controller. The manual says that older controllers may need an adapter for the mic. would I need one for this controller too? Please help.”

Make sure you don’t have your mic muted. No you don’t need an adapter because it has the headphone jack port in the bottom of the controller.
