The COOLPIX AW130 uses A-GPS which is not related to cell towers. It is satellite based. The "A" is for assisted. It is a file that gets updated from our servers in Japan with GPS detail that will assist the camera in getting the GPS coordinates faster.

Accuracy is usually within 10feet or so unless you are moving in a car Cell phones can use wifi and cellar data to approximate your position but as you've found it doesn't work in remote areas
