You do not need a sling subscription. You can get a guest login for AirTV only, at no charge. No monthly fees or any charge for the OTA guide. To set up a guest account, go here: https://www.sling.com/airtv They keep this well hidden, because they really want you to sign up for Sling TV - but you don't have to. One other obscure detail - if you want to use the DVR feature, you provide your own external hard drive, AND you must use the Sling TV app, not the AirTV app.

You are able to do that through this link: https://www.sling.com/airtv That way you will have full guide integration and access to those DVR features mentioned.

If you do have a SlingTV subscription, you can use AirTV to add your local channels to the SlingTV channel lineup so that all of your channels are in one place. As far as DVR functionality, you'll have to plug in your own external drive. Once you do that, it automatically adds DVR capability and there are no additional fees for that.
