Rubber inner shell is exposed towards the corners and hard plastic outer shell on the back.

So the Commuter has two parts, the plastic case and the rubbery inner sleeve. On this case, it's really hard to tell in a picture which is which, but the outer shell is slick and not grippy. The inner part is grippy, so you have grippy around the volume buttons, the sleep button, and on the corners on the bottom. The rest is slick plastic.

It has a rubbery, more like a silicon feel, inner case with a metal outer case. It does not feel rubbery at all in the hand nor is it as bulky as some can be. I highly recommend it!
