The commuter has a raised lip around the front to cushion drops but is open faced. The defender adds a clear plastic screen protector covering the front. Defender has a belt clip that clips over the back like a second commuter hard shell (or you can clip it to the front blocking use until you remove it but offering hardshell protection to screen for packing or hiking or other extreme use). The clip can be used as a stand to tilt the screen for watching.
