No you do not. There are many free apps to choose from and roku provides an app with some decent movies and tv shows for free.. You will if you want to order netflix, hulu, etc. But usually that is done thru your laptop or phone, etc. Easy to use with easy instructions.

No sirr theres tons of free streaming apps on roku only if you wish to subscribe to a certain app such as netflix or hulu
