Sony introduced Quantum Dots way back in 2013 and branded it as Triluminos. https://www.theverge.com/2013/1/16/3881546/sonys-new-triluminous-tvs-pursue-vibrant-hues-with-quantum-dots Anyone trying to say Triluminos does not use Quantum Dots is regurgitating marketing propaganda. Samsung stopped making OLEDs in 2015 because the manufacturing costs were too high. This was a major misstep and ceded the OLED market to Sony and LG. Faced with a shrinking share of the high margin end of the market, Samsung Marketing decided to use the cheaper Quantum dot technology and just stick a Q in front of LED to try and compete against Sony and LG OLEDs in the high end. Obviously it worked. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-samsung-elec-tv/how-samsung-fell-behind-sony-and-lg-in-the-premium-tv-market-idUSKBN1I24K2
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes it IS quantum dots. It's uses nano particles of 30 atom size for green and 50 atom size for Red and then Sony uses pure blue light LED as the back light. Triluminos is basically their term for Quantum dots. Samsung calls it Qled. Hisense Uled etc etc. You cannot achieve wide color gamut on an LCD TV without it. Quantum dots can either be "excited" electrically or by external light source.

It is used similarly (to help achieve a wider color range) but would compare more closely to the color range of Samsung's 8000 series TVs. Because triluminous is a marketing term used by sony it has changed over the years as to how they actually achieve WCG. For one year (I believe 2013) they used a version of QD in their 55" 900B. Since then triluminous is (in addition to their processing) blue led with red and green phosphors... the result is not quite as good as QD, but much cheaper to manufacturer.

Colors are as rich and vivid as nature’s own thanks to the TRILUMINOS® Display with more shades of red, green and blue than ever before. You’ll enjoy vibrant, authentic images that evoke the emotion in every scene. When combined with HDR video, TRILUMINOS® Display further increases the color depth for noticeably brighter and more realistic colors. Discrete LED Control: Backlight Master Drive uses a new, innovative algorithm to control the TV’s ultra-dense LED structure. The result is a picture even more precise than that of a standard full-array TV. Calibrated Beam Design: Send light only where it is needed. Each LED emits a straight beam for greater brightness and more accurate contrast than ever before. Oscar.
