Customers are saying

Customers are enthusiastic about the Roomba 890's cleaning performance, ease of use, and effectiveness in removing pet hair. Many appreciate its simple setup process, although some users found the navigation system needed improvement and reported issues with battery life and noise levels. The small dustbin size was also a common complaint. While some found the virtual wall helpful, others felt it could be improved.

I awoke to two pairs of eyes staring intently at me. It was bright and early this morning and my kids were asking if they could "see Jeeves go". We named the Roomba "Jeeves". I gave a groggy thumbs up and a few loud shrieks and happy giggles later, I heard the Rooma activate with a happy-go-lucky tune. Jeeves quietly left its dock and went about its task as the children watched intently, following it from room to room, sometimes tossing bits of paper or other detritus in Jeeves' way to test its ability to do its job. Patiently and without complaint, the Roomba continued on its duties as the children merrily snuck along in its wake. About an hour later, having provided me enough time to prepare breakfast for the family, Jeeves reported the job was done with another happy tune and returned back to its base to relax and recharge. The children happily reported to the table ready to start the day and the floor was clean and ready for playtime. -- Positives: - the Roomba is super easy to assemble and is mostly prepped right out of the box. It's worth going through and examining it for the first time before you turn it on. - the Roomba is super easy to CLEAN. You WILL spend some time maintaining the Roomba.... as the bin gets full pretty quickly the first few runs through. - almost everything that comes in contact with dirt and grime is accessible to you to clean AND is easy to get to without tools. - the mechanism for picking up gunk is two big rubber rollers on the bottom of the Roomba, so that means a lot of fuzz, dirt, hair, and whatever else will be picked up at first compared to your regular vacuum. As Jeev-- ...er... the Roomba cleans your home, it'll naturally pick up just the new dirt and you won't have to empty as much. - the Roomba is a beast. I have kids, so... no judgment... but, I saw it pick up: pieces of pancake (like 1" at least), noodles, raisins, large pieces of egg, you name it. It didn't flinch. It didn't track a mess all over the floor, it just cleaned and kept going. - the Roomba easily cleans under tables and around chairs and pretty much anywhere it can get to. It has no problem transitioning from hardwood to thick carpet and has enough clearance to go over fixed objects (like cord guards and floor mats or metallic table legs flush to the floor/carpet) - the battery is sufficient to clean a LOT before having to recharge. - the schedule feature is easy to learn. - the errors and lights are easy to learn and clearly point to trouble without much guesswork. The app tells you exactly what's going on, too. You can set a remote clean if you want to. - the setup is super easy and FAST. - Robot Vacuum. The floor is wicked clean and WE, BUSY PARENTS, DIDN'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING BUT EMPTY THE BIN. - the kids love it. Seriously, it's their new favorite toy. Negatives: - the "full bin" light came on about halfway through this morning's clean. I paused the clean cycle and emptied the bin and cleaned the contact sensors, but the light didn't turn off. I paused the clean again and cleaned more of the vacuum. Still didn't fix it. The light only turned off once Jeeves returned to its charger again. I'm not sure what that was about, but there's a SLEW of super helpful videos that demonstrate EXACTLY what you need to do to troubleshoot. Some sensors seem to reset only when reconnected with the home base. - I mentioned earlier, you'll need to clean out the rollers and bin quite a bit at first - especially if you have longer hair or someone in the house has longer hair. If you have pets, expect to clean it out A LOT at first unless your existing vacuum is very thorough. - can get stuck and requires your help at first to navigate. If you change the structure, shape, placement, etc of the objects in the room, it can get confused. - bathrooms and under beds are tricky, there's a lot of objects and it seems to get overwhelmed in this space. - they're not kidding when they say make sure home base is easy for the Roomba to get to. The first few times ours got lost because we placed it in our dining room where the nature of the room changes frequently (chairs move, highchair placement varies, etc). It always seems to be able to get back home but not without significant effort. - I wouldn't call this a negative, but... the cleaning approach, while it learns where things are, is... interesting. It "zig-zags" through your home most of the time, rather than going in straight lines along walls and such. There's a method to its madness, but if you are used to the "get everything as clean as possible in the most efficient way before the kids demand your attention again" mode, you're not going to find it here. TL;DR: if you're busy or just hate to clean, you need this. It's really cool and it cleans very well with a minimum of fuss.

I was so excited to try out the Roomba 890. I've heard of them but never really looked into them. This Roomba is a mid-tier model with WiFi connectivity. When I first set it up, there were a few issues with the app and the Roomba not connecting to it. When I ran the Roomba for the first time, I was surprised at how much it was picking up. It seemed to do a nice clean of my rugs and hardwood floors . I also ended up buying two more of the Virtual Walls. I wanted it to clean both our family room and living room, but that proved to be too difficult for the robot as it missed areas or it would stay in one area for 10 minutes and not move on. One issue that I have been having is with the Full Bin indicator. After I empty the bin, I'll clean the sensors and reinstall it into the Roomba, but the light won't go off. It is a little annoying. Hopefully that can be updated in a future firmware update. Speaking of the bin, it is small and gets full pretty quick when it goes over one of my thicker rugs. Overall, I am really happy with this Roomba. In the future, I'd like to try out the Roomba 980 as that has better cleaning and camera sensors and can clean my whole home, where as the 890 is best for one large room.

This was one of the most fun products I've ever used and it is also very functional. I'd like to relay my observations that may help others to use this product successfully. It is simple to set up - you download the Roomba app and follow the prompts. It connects to your WiFi but only the 2.4 GHZ speed which everyone has, I also have 5 GHZ so that's one update I'd like for this product. It is amazing in that it will go under a table or under a couch (even through the skirt) and will find its way out - I wonder when I last cleaned under the couch so that's a great feature. Get's corners really well and has the smarts to detect an edge and will clean along that edge. It also will detect if more dirt in a particular spot and will wheel in a circle to make sure the dirt is picked up. You do need to remove clutter like toys and shoes but it will go around them; however it is best to not have a cluttered area. It comes with one 'virtual wall barrier'. You will need at least two so that you can ensure you can force Roomba to do a single room and most rooms have two entrances - you can block Roomba with a board if you like. The 'virtual wall barrier' has two modes a) a straight line and b) a radius. The radius is useful so you can leave a dog dish in a corner and Roomba will avoid it. You may want to remove chairs to speed up his random cleaning, however if you leave table chairs in place, I was pleased to see that Roomba spun around and cleaned the pet hair and dust from around the leg completely - nice. You can set a cleaning schedule if you're better organized than me. What I found useful was to have Roomba clean a single room and it will return to the home base if it has enough charge left and the dust bin is not full. But it doesn't matter if it does not get back to home base because you will have to clean the dust bin and wipe Roomba's sides and top and bottom (like a baby I guess) , so then you can place him in front of his base and hit the home dock button or just place him on the dock. I found 60-80 minutes of cleaning can be done without a recharge. If you have a plant stand with slanted edges, Roomba will climb up a bit, but will not get stuck and will continue. I made sure it had room to get around a plant stand so that it cleaned everything. I never did see Roomba get stuck. Roomba is quieter than a vacuum but along with the spinning side brush and spinning cleaning rollers underneath, it does have a vacuum - great. I did take Roomba upstairs and closed all the doors and he did the hallway. You can then put him in another room and let him at that dust. I have found that by doing one room at a time with Roomba, I'm cleaning much better and the house shows it. Roomba won't have enough charge to do your entire downstairs in one cycle. Going from carpet to hardwood is no problem at all - I was amazed at the ability of Roomba to negotiate obstacles. I did notice that our dining and kitchen chairs both have a 12" leg spacing. Roomba is 13.5 inches. Not a cleaning problem as he will go around the chairs but if Roomba can get between things it certainly will improve his cleaning longevity. Having said that I would not want to compromise the current design points and find that Roomba gets stuck. I would recommend this device especially for busy people since it does keep things very clean while you are doing other things, just plan it out to do part of your house at a time and you will be delighted as my wife and I were.

    Great Vacuum... almost Perfect

First, let me say, that as a vacuum, the Roomba 890 is a great little vacuum cleaner. It really picks up most dirt and debris, is efficient, and if you use it regularly, it can reduce the need to vacuum the house yourself significantly. In my house, I use this on the main floor, which is an open floor plan, and all hardwood floors. I have not used this on carpets or have taken this upstairs for a few reasons that I will get to shortly. Overall, this little guy is a great workhorse. I had an older Roomba, which works well, but this model has rubber "brushes" which really keeps them cleaner and helps to avoid getting hair wrapped around them. From a cleaning perspective, this thing works well. As others have observed, the Roomba operates in a somewhat random pattern to clean the room. When you watch it, it looks so inefficient, but it works. It does bump into things as it starts to figure out the layout of the room, but it learns over time, and in the end, the floors get cleaned. Is this thing perfect... no. With my open floor plan, the little guy will just wander around and does not finish the entire floor before needing a charge. I use the lighthouse to block off the room I want it to focus on, as opposed to letting the Roomba wander around the house. Then if I want to do another room or two, I simply move the charging cradle and the roomba, and let it go off and clean the next room. I find this works better for me. I also find that I need to Roomba proof the house a bit. I have 2 kids, which means that small toys need to be up off the floor and cords tied back so that the Roomba can maneuver best. It's not a big deal, and this guy hasn't gotten caught, but I've found a couple of accessories and small toys caught in the bin. Just need to check before emptying into the trash. This is basically why I don't use the Roomba 890 upstairs. Overall, as a robot vacuum cleaner, it does make regular cleaning easier, and keeps the floors clean for where I use it. It won't completely replace regular vacuuming of the house for me, but it is a big help!

Cleans decently, but it's just dumb.

PIcked it up to help maintain a house with pets. Overall, it does a decent job of picking up pet hair. Very good on the hardwood floors, so-so on the area rugs. It will not replace regular vacuuming, but it does help in that it's required less often. The biggest issue I have is that the cleaning is just random. Some areas it will clean over and over, while skipping other areas entirely. There's one area in the corner of our living room that has an end table, and it's difficult for the little robot to navigate. It will go in there and bounce around for 10 minutes before finally getting out, only to immediately return and spend another 5-10 minutes trying to get around. It will clean 25% of a room then end up in the next room, where it may clean anywhere from 10% of it to 80% of it before running out of battery or moving on to another room. If it's not in the same room with the dock, it will simply stop there. Once recharged, it will not start where it left off, simply continuing its random pattern as before. Overall it's a nice assistant, helping the keep the house a little more picked up between vacuuming, but it certainly does not replace regular vacuuming. Disappointing for the almost $500 retail price (can be found on sale closer to $300 if you look, though). It's hard to say whether I would recommend it or not. I would if the expectation wasn't to replace vacuuming and you found it on sale, but I wouldn't recommend it at its $449 MSRP.
