stuck in the middle
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. While this isn't necessarily a bad vacuum, it sits in between two product categories without fully enjoying the advantages of either. It's bigger and more powerful than a stick vacuum but also much heavier. So it outperforms many of the products in that category but without the advantage of being highly portable. It's smaller and less powerful than a corded vacuum but much easier to move around the house. You get the advantage of being lighter and untethered from a wall outlet but lose the powerful suction and carpet grooming of a big upright. This works much better on carpets without a thick pile or on hardwood floors. In thick carpet it feels like it's getting bogged down without really reaching into the pile. Also of note, the original battery that came with it was dead and would not charge. I had to get a replacement for it to work, and it must have the battery in it to run. There's no way to run directly off wall power, although you can charge the battery while it's in the vacuum.

Convenient replacement for upright corded...almost
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.PROs: - The easy-activation ION boost button right near your thumb quickly engages maximum "sucking power" for performance that actually approaches a corded upright - Slings its weight low with the battery pack down by the canister, filter and motor so 1-handed operation is still smooth and easy despite being a bit on the heavier side for a cordless (about 12 lbs) - Some of the brightest LED headlights I've seen on a vacuum thus far--brilliant for dark corners, under furniture, finding crumbles & crud on a hardwood floor, etc. - The power head is perhaps on the smaller side (about 8" across), but there are edge-to-edge brushes that help sweep debris into the rollers/suction-zone - Shark knows 'quick release' very well--a simple button press near the top of the canister and you can easily 1-hand lift the battery/motor/filter unit off the roller head to convert to a 2-handed portable unit for furniture, cars, stairs, drapes, etc., or a 2-handed stick vacuum to reach carpeting WAAAAYYYY underneath beds and dressers - With the power head/rollers running, it honestly does do a great job of grabbing dust, hair and debris from floors and carpets; definitely no complaints in that department CONs: - The extra attachments don't store in/on the unit so you'll have to find a separate location to keep them handy - Unlike some other Shark cordless models, this one does NOT keep the ION Boost's extra suction engaged with a button press; instead, you have to continually hold the boost button down for sustained maximum power - Advertised battery capacity is about 50 minutes; we only got 27 off a new battery pack with mixed ION Boost/regular speed suction Summary review: I get the sense that this vacuum aims to fill the gap between Shark's more capable mid-tier corded uprights and the smaller, more convenient, but less aggressive cordless units. In that sense, it performs quite admirably--the combined perimeter fixed brushes, the hard-floor soft-roller, and the deep clean brush roller, coupled with a motor that can be powerful enough to hold its own against a corded model--all really do a great job of surface, spot, and deep cleaning for both carpets and hardwood floors without having to constantly stop and relocate to a new wall outlet. Like most of Shark's models, this one wears its heavy/bulky parts low on the unit so you're hard pressed to fit the powered brush head deeply under beds and dressers in its upright configuration. Thankfully, you can quickly and VERY easily remove the motor/canister with just one button push, lift the whole assembly off the power head, and then you have a stick vacuum in one hand with the motor unit hanging in the other...it's a very handy design feature that allows seamless transition to a configuration that will extend the power head's reach by several feet for cleaning wide/long swathes under even king-sized beds. Despite this thoughtful design decision, I would have gladly accepted just a tiny bit more bulk to the main unit for onboard storage of the crevice tool and upholstery brushes. I also would have liked the ION Boost mode to stay engaged with a button press, or least stay engaged for a minute or longer, rather than me having to hold down the boost button the entire time--though it's not awkward to do so, it became frustrating for working on carpets that needed a bit more TLC because it felt like the boost setting should have been the default setting all along. We've also got a pretty big house with three levels--the P50 didn't last more than half an hour doing what I consider to be "normal" carpet and kitchen floor cleaning that benefited from both regular and maximum suction power. Granted, we knew going in that engaging the boost would cut short battery capacity between charges so it's not like the Shark didn't perform as advertised, but at least for those of you with a bigger house intending to use the P50 to meet all your cleaning needs, you might want an extra battery pack handy unless you don't mind waiting around for a recharge in between rooms/jobs. Still, when it comes to a vacuum cleaner, the main concern should always center on suction--does this cordless stand up well to its more powerful corded competition? I'm happy to report a "qualified yes." Suction power on the P50 actually does approach that of a corded upright model when using the ION boost mode--just be aware that keeping maximum power engaged can dramatically shorten battery capacity for larger jobs. In its default (i.e. lower power) setting, you will definitely get a LOT more vacuuming time and performance should be good enough for most of your quick-cleans, floor clearing, or smaller vacuuming jobs...there's just not quite enough oomph for really serious deep carpet (or maybe car floor mat) cleaning without a sustained boost from the motor. Still, if you have a small apartment or simply need something cordless to move around for touch-up vacuuming right before company arrives, this one will more than capably fit the bill.

Versatile, yet powerful with a modern design
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Shark ION P50 Powered-Lift Away IC162 Cordless Upright Vacuum cleaner is an overall versatile, powerful, quite well-designed, and not too noisy when operating. I was truly impressed what it would pick up in terms of dust, hair, and other particles when I cleaned my carpets, amazing! The carpet looked and felt so much cleaner after "shark-ing" it. It also handles very well gentle hardwood and tile floor cleaning. Just make sure you select the right mode conveniently placed on the handle. There is no automated switching between modes, which was fine by me. I truly appreciate the cordless operations of this vacuum cleaner which greatly enhances versatility. Shark provides Lithium-Ion batteries, which is totally awesome as this battery technology ensures constant same-speed operations until depleted. Competitor products come with Nickel-Hybrid batteries which go slower and slower until depleted. In the instructions it is stated the battery would last up to 50 minutes. I found this to be true for hard floors, but that number will go down to about 35 minutes when cleaning carpets, understandably so, as it the brush speed and suction is much higher compared to the hard floor program. Recharging the battery takes about 3.5 hours, so for bigger homes, if this is the only vacuum cleaner you want, you may want to consider getting a spare battery. Plus-side of things: - Easy assembly - HEPA Filter - Bagless operations - Cordless with Lithium-Ion batteries - Decent time of operations with one battery load - Cleans carpets, hardwood floors, and tile floors - Lots of useful accessories/tools Not so plus-side of things: - Cleaning Path Width is only 10 inches - Feels too plastic-y - No on-board accessories storage Rating: A well-deserved 4 stars in my opinion.

Shark ION cordless has power!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Shark ION P50 cordless upright packs a lot of power. Out of the box, there are a few simple pieces to assemble which took maybe 5 minutes. The battery can be charged 3 ways... In the charger, directly into the battery to the power source or with the battery in the vacuum, plug it in. I have used it a few times now and it still has power, so I don't know how long the battery lasts. I first vacuumed a small area and was very impressed with the amount of dirt/dust/cat hair in the cup. I removed the canister and pressed the button to release the dirt into the trash. Very easy. Everything is marked where to "press" for easy release. The vacuum was easy to manipulate - easily steering around objects, and the handle makes it easy to push/pull. Also, the power button is on the handle near the buttons to switch on the bare floor roller or the carpet roller. There is also a "boost" button which increases the suction - I particularly liked that as using it left those nice vacuum steaks on the carpet. However, I did find it to be somewhat heavy for a cordless. I am used to a cordless stick vacuum. It wasn't too heavy, just heavier than expected. It does come with a few on board attachments which is nice and as I said it vacuums very well. Overall, I would like it to be smaller... But it does have plenty of power... So I guess I have to give up one for the other. Though I wouldn't recommend it for a full house vacuum, for an extra vacuum for that quick pick up, it works great

All this Power, and its cordless too!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So, Shark is now officially the king of the vacuum world taking that title from Hoover and Dyson! this thing is a perfect replacement for a corded vacuum; if it only had a spare battery/charging station, you could eliminate your wired vacuum completely! As a few others said, its missing a tool/accessory caddy, but, that is the ONLY thing this little beast doesn't have;cleans all my carpets/floors with just one charge, and, everything about it says quality! With this unit, and a few of their other newer models, there is no doubt that Shark is now the KING of the vacuuming world!

Even the kids want to use it
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This vacuum has it all, looks, not tied down by a cord, good battery life, and easy enough for my 2nd grader to use. The Shark ION P50 comes partially assembled in box, just add in handle, charge battery, and turn it on. The body of the vacuum is comprised of 3 chambers, the main chamber being the dirt collection tank, then the rechargeable battery is to one side and a washable HEPA filter is to the other. This body will lift away with a click of a button, so you can use this vacuum as a portable handheld or a stick. The dirt collection tank also lifts away from the body for ease of dumping, with smooth walls, so everything goes straight into the trash. Shark designed this so you don't have to pull out hair or anything else that normally gets wrapped around the center cone in other vacuums. On the handle of the stick, you have 3 options - floor and carpet plus a boost option. There is also a trigger type lever to release the hose from the stick. One new feature to note is that this vacuum has 2 rollers, one that feels like a microfiber cloth roller, and the second traditional carpet roller. These are both powered, and does a remarkable job of cleaning dust or cat litter off of my hardwood floors. Lastly, included are both crevice tools and a duster brush. Unfortunately these cannot be stored on the vacuum. When powering this on, I find the vacuum is quiet, especially for the amount of suction. I love that the vacuum head is small and will fit in tight spaces and under furniture. For a cordless, the power and suction are great, and almost enough that you forget this is not a full sized vacuum. When using the tools, I liked that the vacuum automatically switches over and adds boost, while your battery life is shorter, it does a great job getting those hard to reach areas clean. When finished, dumping the dirt is one handed, lift away and open compartment are both one button functions. Lastly, and one of my favorite features, is that when you're done, turn it off and walk away. The stick automatically locks upright into place, which is a big plus since my children have broken previous vacuums by letting the handle drop if they don't fully lock it in place.

Innovative Design Works Great
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is by far the best cordless vacuum I have tried. It has a 28 volt power pack with about an hour of run time in normal mode and about 20 minutes in turbo mode. You can charge the battery in a separate battery charger base or you can charge the battery by plugging the power supply right into the bottom of the battery or indeed you can charge the battery while it is installed on the vacuum – nice. It is very well designed in terms of reconfiguring the vacuum into basically 3 modes. Normal with the power head attached is for carpet or bare floors. A second mode is to lift the wand off for cleaning draperies and those cobwebs up in the corners. The third mode is the ability to remove just the handle and this gives you a short configuration to do furniture for example. In the latter two modes you can keep the canister on the machine or easily lift it away. I found it was refreshing to find the very simple ways to unhook the main parts to get into the different configurations. Also it is easy and intuitive as well to clean the dust bin and remove and clean the hepa filter. Some nice accessories are included. There are a couple small heads for wall and furniture cleaning and you also get a very useful tapered nozzle that has a brush that can be deployed on the nozzle or retracted. I do find that with cordless vacuums you can vacuum without getting that cold sweat that occurs sometimes when you push around a heavier corded vacuum. Also the lift-away feature makes it even lighter when you need to clean up stairs for example – and no cord to pull up the steps. The most innovative feature is actually in the power head and is why it gets the label DuoClean Technology. There is a spinning bristle brush plus a soft brush that together really do pull up the dust and dirt on carpet or bare floors – especially the finer particles so that for a wood floor it really does polish the flooring. I do highly recommend this vacuum. It is innovative, well designed, solid and does a great job cleaning your house.

A real substitute for the corded vac!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm really surprised with the power of this battery powered vac! The Ion P50 has nearly the same suction as the corded version and the 2 floor modes work well by reducing the spin of the secondary roller for hard floors. The boost mode works well to remove stuck on debris. I like the fact that it comes apart the same way the corded version does to tackle different jobs. Though attachments could have been consolidated to 2 units instead of 3 and I'm a little disappointed there isn't anywhere on the unit to store them. The battery lasts for a good 45 minutes for 2000sf of floor and about 400sf of carpet twice. I love that you charge the battery externally allowing you to use a second or third battery if you have extensive cleaning requirements. The large dust cup will last until you're done with the whole house and still be only just above the half point. I chose this unit over the other more popular cordless models because it puts the weight of the unit at the base near the rollers where contact with the floor is necessary to it's performance. To make it better, I would've liked the motorized pet brush to be interchangeable between this and the corded unit rather than having to buy another specifically for this. The P50 is well built and I'm sure will last a long time.

Shark has done it again
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a very versatile and useful vacuum for any home. I really like the handheld feature where you can detach the canister. The battery life is insane on this thing. I was really impressed with how it did on hard floors and bare surfaces. It's a little heavy compared to many lightweight vacuums but it does the job. The power mode but I love it.

Wish It Sucked
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I would normally say this unit sucks, but unfortunately it does not. It quit drawing the debris into he canister after just a few uses. It collects at the hose elbow coming from the base and clogs. I called into service and was advised it was an issue they were aware of, bad motor, but motor was not available , so they replaced the whole unit. I was impressed with this service. Unfortunately the new unit started doing the same thing after just a couple of uses. Doesn't help to replace one bad unit with another bad unit. I suppose they will send me another bad unit. I wish my review was like the others who have had great success with their unit.
