typical bouncy robot, nice touch with the handheld

This is just your typical bouncy bounce vacuum, that wonders around like an adorable dummy until he decides to (attempt) to go home. There is no smart mapping, or any advanced navigation features other than cliff detection, and he slows down before actually bumping something, but still bumps it. There is one roll of magnetic boundary marker, that you can cut up and place in doorways, but it is quite ugly to have these strips everywhere. This robot is truly a one room vacuum, and I can almost guarantee you that he will not make it back to his base if it starts entering other rooms. With that, this vacuum does clean well, and do what it's destined to do well, but don't have overly high expectations. My other robot is a smart navigating one, so watching dumb dumb clean is aggravating, and I usually have to pick him up and bring him home after he's done. The built in hand vac is nice, but kinda gimmicky as the dust bin can hold basically a skittle or two before its full. Again, not a horrible product by any means. It does vacuum well, the navigation is just not there, but it is in line with any other "non-smart" robot.

I've owned a couple different robot vacuums and this one is just as good, if not better than the other popular brands. Set up is super quick and easy. The app is actually pretty good and well developed. Usually the apps that come with these products are bad but not the Shark app. Others have stated they have had issues with the app but I have had none. This vacuum cleans very well, has a large dust bin and comes with everything you need to maintain a clean house. The handheld vacuum that comes with this is awesome. It is solidly built and has very strong suction. It is so good for those corners of debris and pet hair. This kit also comes with a boundary strip that you can cut and place to block off the vacuum to prevent it from entering unwanted areas. Only complaint about this is that it is a bit unsightly. You can hide it under a rug if possible but we had to use it to block off the area around the cat's water and food bowl. It is definitely an eye-sore but it works. Overall, I can certainly recommend this Robot vacuum system. Works well for me and I think you'd be pleased if you decide to purchase.

Shark - ION™ S87 App-Controlled Robot Vacuum with Handheld Vacuum - Ash Gray I have the Shark ION S87 model RV850WV, which includes the handheld vacuum too. It is a really good combination. I love the convenience of a powerful handheld that recharges on the same charging dock as the Shark ION robotic vacuum cleaner. They set and charge separately while using one dock. The handheld unit is powerful and efficient. It is cylindrical in shape so it gives you more reach and includes 3 attachments which slide into the suction opening of the handheld: there's a crevice tool, a wider attachment suitable for furniture and stairs, and a brush attachment suitable for situations where light brushing while vacuuming is needed. The handheld only has two buttons; power (on/off) and the other button opens the dustbin or dust cup. You just hold the handheld over the trashcan and hit the open button then watch the dustbin pop open dropping its contents into the trashcan. The filters are located inside and are accessible for cleaning when needed. For me, the convenience of grabbing the handheld to do a smaller job is great. You quickly dump the dustbin and place the handheld back in its charging cradle on the dock so it's ready whenever you need it. You can use it not only around the house but in your car as well. The Shark ION RV850 Robot Vacuum has Smart Sensor technology so that it will navigate around your home avoiding furniture and other obstacles (as with any vacuum cleaner, move small items, clothing, curtains etc that you don't want to be sucked into the vacuum). It doesn't scan and map the room as some more expensive robotic vacuums do, but rather goes until it senses something in its way then it will turn to avoid and continue until it runs across something else to avoid and so on. Although it looks haphazard to watch its progress, it generally covers the ground needed in this method. If you schedule it to run every other day or several days a week, it will keep your floors clear of dust and debris. Speaking of floors, this type of robotic vacuum does better on hard surfaces. It will clean carpet, but the heavier more expensive robotic vacuums are better suited to clean wall-to-wall carpet and will do a more thorough job. The ION has the usual sensors so it won't run off steps and will navigate around furniture or other obstructions. I timed my ION and it ran one hour and six minutes on a charge covering about 25% rug surfaces and 75% hardwood/tile surfaces. Once its charge is nearly expended, it will head back to its charging station to power up. Depending on its location, or the number of obstacles between it and its dock, it may take it some time to find its charging station. Shark offers a separate secondary dock for sale to use at the other end of your ION's area so that it can more easily and quickly find a charging dock. The ION does not come with a remote control, but you can download the iOS or Android app to your smartphone following the directions in the app to connect the ION to your Wi-Fi using the 2.5 Mhz band. Once paired with your phone, you can control it whether you're home or away on a trip. You can also use Google Assistant or Alexa to control your ION by voice. In addition, the ION has physical buttons on it you can press to have it return to the charging dock, Clean or Clean with Max power. Max will use the battery more quickly but you'll have greater suction with this setting. It defaults to the regular suction setting whenever you select the Clean button. I downloaded the Android app to my Galaxy Note8 phone, and it connected to the ION without a problem. There are always places in your home where any robotic vacuum can get stuck. Once you've run it a time or two you can pinpoint any trouble spots and usually move something one way or the other to remove the problem. Sometimes there's nothing you can move so the ION comes with 8' of magnetic "tape" you can cut to any length and place in front of the area you want the ION to avoid. When it rolls up to the "tape," it turns and heads another direction. You may want an area where you have pet food/water on the floor to be avoided by the ION. Anyplace you want the ION to avoid, place a piece of this "tape" by it and it will do just that. I really like the combination of the ION robotic vacuum and handheld vacuum. It's very useful. Using the app, you can program the ION to clean different days whether you remember to direct it to manually or not. I would recommend the Shark ION with the handheld unit. This is the only one I've seen that offers the robotic vacuum with a handheld unit, so, in my book, that's a very definite plus. There are a few cons that you might want to keep in mind if comparing with other units: 1. Some comparable robotic vacuums have a slightly longer runtime of up to 1.5 hours or, in just a few cases, more than that. 2. While the ION has two rotating brushes, one on either side, to help push debris toward the middle of the ION where the main roller brush beneath located in the vacuum opening can more effectively pick up the debris, most other units have 3 or more brush heads on each rotating brush where the ION only has one brush head. In my opinion, more brush heads per rotating brush would help provide more efficient pickup of debris. This doesn't appear to me to be a do-or-die issue but I wanted to note it 3. Unfortunately, the 3 attachments for the handheld unit do not have a storage position on the dock - this would have been perfect, but those items must be stored elsewhere While not perfect, the Shark ION RV850WV is a great addition to the household and offers a convenient handheld vacuum I've not seen elsewhere. I recommend it based upon my own use of the product.

The Sharik ion robot is my second floor robot. I live on a farm and dirt is part of our life. The robot is very sturdy and has great power for driving it over various types of floor, from vinyl to carpet. The power wheels have a nice tread. It also seems to have a great sense of where it is and when to slow down and turn. I watched it navigate cords without sucking them in! Woo! As expected in a Shark, it was very easy to remove and empty the extra large dirt bin. Because of the amount of dust in my house (it IS a farm), I am going to buy a second filter so I can have one rinsed and drying on alternate days. When it started getting low on power, it shut down its sucking and headed for the charging station. The robot has three power levels. On quiet it uses less power, but I did not find it much quieter than the normal vacuum level. It definitely picks up the pet hair, find dust and clods of dirt though! An interesting point is that this robot did not bother my dogs. My other one does. The robot comes with a handheld vacuum, which is quite nice. the little handheld is lightweight and charges on the same stand. There are three attachments for the handheld: brush, crevice and flat tool for sucking up pet hair. I was disappointed that there was no place to store the handheld attachments, either on the charging station or the handheld itself. This surprised me as most Shark products are cleverly designed to be helpful to the user. This what part of the reason I reduced my rating. On the robot, I was surprised that there was not a regular 'remote' that could be used to steer the robot or set a pattern of cleaning. Also the instructions did not indicate if more than one phone could be tied to the robot, or if it would work if the internet is down (I assume it would still work). So my rating is reduced to four for the lack of storage for the handheld (really would be simple to have points on the charging station to store them!), lack of information about using more than one phone, lack of information about lack of internet, and lack of being able to steer the robot from the phone or from the (missing) remote control. This is the best vacuuming robot I have seen in action and the drive wheels enable it to get over things that are over half an inch high, including cords, rugs, and doorways.

I really like robot vacuums! What could be better than watching something (not me!) vacuum the floor - on its own??!!?? Ok, so this may not be the best robot vacuum out there, but then it's not the most expensive either. It is a reliable Shark and it comes with a handheld vacuum that is used separately for those quick pick ups. The robot is efficient and over time, it seems to learn your set up and it knows the way back to its dock. It does a good job removing dust and dirt and some pet hair from your carpet/floors. Pet hair can become tangled in the roller but thankfully we have short hair cats so that shouldn't be much of an issue. It is easy to dump the collected dirt from both the robot vacuum and the handheld. I like this Shark. I am enjoying using it and I find it extremely useful. To me it won't replace my upright, but I won't have to use the upright nearly as often! Yay!

I have to say I was excited to get this robot vacuum as I've had others in the past with varying degrees of success and I figured something from a company as good as Shark would put out a decent robot vac. I was wrong. To start, the concept is a decent one, it's the tried and true roomba-esque disc-shaped model with sweeping brushes to help get in corners and direct debris toward the brush head. In addition, the charging cradle also has a wand-style mini-vac for quick cleanup jobs which is a nice addition. Honestly this is just about where my positive feelings stop. In my house only our second floor has any carpet, so I figured I'd set it up, up there so it could do me the most good. When it started it seemed like it might be on its way to a decent job at cleaning, but I couldn't have been more wrong. On getting stuck First, this appears to be slightly taller than many other robot vacs I've had, which is to say it's right at the border line between too tall to go under many things, and short enough to go under them. In fact, in each room I've put it in, it's been just tall enough to get snagged with its front bumper hooked under at least one piece of furniture, where it then oscillates about for a while until it decides it is stuck and stops moving. This was the case with the bed in one room, a futon in another, and a chair in the third. I'm not entirely sure how they managed to pick exactly the right height to get hooked on something in every room, but they did. On cleaning track and multiple rooms. Next, if you have multiple rooms you expect this to go into and out of, just dont bother. I placed this in the relatively short hallway and let it go. For each room it went in, ran around until the battery got low, then went to find the dock. That is to say it never left the room to go vacuum somewhere else. I looked up how this vacuum determines its location, and the short answer is: it basically doesnt. It has a preprogrammed path that it follows until it hits something, then it turns. Unfortunately that makes it entirely random for it to not only find its way into a room, but then hopefully find its way out to move on to other areas. In each case for me it never found its way out. After it would finish a room and run out of batteries to go dock, I would have to close that door so it would not find itself going back in that room and redoing everything it already did. To the point of the preprogrammed path. You will find that it REPEATEDLY goes over the same spots over and over and over again. Doesnt seem to matter what size room as due to the fact it will never leave that room, it will reclean areas of the floor repeatedly. Now in a smaller room it actually did a good job covering the entire floor, and while it never left that room, it did manage to get to basically every part of the floor (with the exception of getting stuck under the front edge of the ikea futon). Honestly, I can say the best use for a robot vac of this style is a single open-concept floorplan with as few to no doorways as possible. If you live in a house with a large open floorplan, this will be fine, but anything with hallways and many doors you'll be much less than impressed with it. On the app and 'smart' functions I would say this robot is basically smart in name only, and that, only because it has an app where you can tell it to start or stop. It does not learn so outside of the fact that it is wifi connected, there is nothing smart about it. The app is extremely basic and only allows you to start or stop cleaning as well as set a schedule. Overall this was a fairly disappointing showing from shark. The strange size and overall lack of any mapping at all makes for a fairly useless smart vac that constantly gets stuck unless you have a very specific floorplan.

I did not know what to expect as this was my first automatic vacuum but I am loving it. It feels well built and easy to handle when needed. For example emptying the debris container is very easy. I also really love the hand held vacuum it came with! It comes in handy for so many different situations and it feels very powerful. The app for this vacuum is very user friendly. It is extremely straightforward and I had no issues getting it to connect to the robot or set up a schedule for it. One con is that it only allows one scheduled cleaning per day so it would have been nice to set it up to run multiple times without having to physically push the clean button. It is very smart in regards to its surroundings; when it goes near stairs, it knows to stop and turn around so you do not have to constantly watch it. It is great that it is so versatile and can move around from different surface types with ease. It is very strong and powerful, almost too strong though. It pushed a kitchen chair back into the table and even closed a pantry door. Also, one thing that worried me early on was it ran over a phone charger cord and when it sucked it up, it raveled it up and rather than shutting down, it attempted to continue cleaning. After something like that happens, you learn pretty quickly to keep anything that could mess with it, up and off the floor. When cleaning, it is pretty quiet and you can easily still hear a TV playing unlike a typical vacuum cleaner. Also noticed it does take quite a long time to charge but the battery life seems to last a very long time so it balances out. Overall the convenience of this machine is very impressive and I would recommend it to just about anyone with a home larger than a studio apartment.

This is the first robot vacuum I have used. I have to say that I really do like the vacuum running around the house on it's own sucking up dog hair and dirt - it has reduced the amount of time I have to vacuum using the standard upright. I like the vacuum wand that is attached to the charging base. This is very convenient for vacuuming the couches and works great on dog hair. I would give it a higher rating, but the phone app does not work on my Pixel phone. I called customer service and when I was disconnected, I had to call back (they can't call you back). After getting through to a second agent, he was unable to help me fix the connection problem, so he said that he would escalate it and that I would get a call back within 24 hours. I still have NOT received a phone call (it's been 2 days). I am able to run the vacuum without the app (thank goodness) by just touching the Clean button on the unit. It seems to do a good job of vacuuming - the bin was totally full (and it's very easy to empty). The second down side is that when I do run it, it manages to make it into my living room and kitchen/dining area, and it made it to one of my bathrooms once. It has not ventured down the hallway to my other rooms - so really it is only vacuuming half my house. If I could get the app working and if it learns to go down the hall - it would be closer to a five star rating.

This thing sucks. I've ran bot over 15 times. and it has never mapped; Neato mapped after 1 run (I have Neato downstairs, Shark upstairs). The bot has never gone from my bedroom to bathroom, the entrance doesn't have a door and is wide so can't understand why it doesn't make it. Ugh! Such a waste.

We apologize for any confusion on this. This robot is not a mapping robot. It is designed with Smart Sensor Technology so it can navigate around obstructions as it cleans your floor. By using an array of sensors, the robot will steer itself around your home, using walls and objects as its guide and gently bumping them. This method allows the robot to travel in and out of rooms and around obstacles. The robot might not hit every area in one cleaning, but by scheduling daily cleaning, you'll notice its cleaning path will differ with each run to ensure it is maintaining your floors.
