Best Alternative to the Apple Magic Keyboard

My daughter bought herself a 2021 12.9” iPad Pro. She wanted a case and a keyboard to protect her iPad. The Apple Magic Keyboard is nice, and I like how it props up the iPad up and closer; but it lacks a function row of keys and it’s overpriced. We instead got Logitech Combo in Sand color. Had it for about 6-weeks now. Pros: - Save over $125 compared to the Apple keyboard (for the 12.9” model) - Extra row of function keys - Acts as a case for protection when you detach the Keyboard (if you want to draw on Procreate or play games) - Glass screen protectors still fit and close solid - Stand is adjustable & Keyboard is detachable for when watching movies/videos - Case is soft denim type material - Feels minimalistic when closed, not too bulky - The case has raised lip around the screen (very tiny lip) so it gives a little space from the screen touching a flat surface; if you happen to lay the iPad screen side down or possibly drop it. Cons: - Keyboard this small, takes getting used to; but my daughter is still small so it works for her small hands - Keyboard makes the iPad feel like a laptop because the screen is further away from you (compared to the Apple Magic Keyboard that puts the iPad closer to you since it’s elevated) - Kind of feels heavy when all put together (but I don’t know how heavy the Apple Keyboard case is for comparison) - The Adjustable stand, you always have to adjust from its flat position (just the con for having an adjustable stand) - No other material options (and only 2 color options) other than the soft cloth material - The Keyboard and trackpad does not feel as solid as the Apple case (but it still works well nonetheless) - No place to really secure the Apple Pencil other than the open charging side (however the Stylus Sling Pencil Holder does the trick) Overall, I would definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a keyboard case that also act as a protective case (when using the iPad without the keyboard). My daughter loves it, and likes the lighter Sand color. I like that it costs way less than the Apple Keyboard.

Great case and keyboard for my iPad Pro 12.9”. I did my research looking for a keyboard case but one that wasn’t so bulky when I just wanted to use the iPad without typing. I was concerned about folding back keyboards on some other models and also looked into the magic keyboard from Apple. The magic is pretty and all but just didn’t cut it for me and can’t fold it back which seemed dumb. I was hesitant about this one because I thought “well what am I going to do just leave my keyboard lying around when i detach it?” I gave it a shot because it was in stock at my local store, and I’ve loved it. The keyboard keys are responsive and have good travel for an iPad keyboard. Trackpad works great. The keyboard is attached via a strong magnet and have never had issues with it detaching unless i wanted it detached. If i am lying around the house and want to just use my iPad on the couch, i will keep the keyboard on my bathroom sink where i have all my chargers. If traveling and you want to not use the keyboard, it will detach, and you can flip it around to reattach to the back of the iPad. When you close it, the keyboard is facing inward (not exposed) and is attached by magnets on both sides so it does not flop around or anything. You have full access to a non-keyboard iPad with the only issue being the added weight. It is quite heavy on a 12.9” but when detached the iPad feels normal (the 12.9 is just heavy to begin with). You really get the best of both worlds with this one and don’t let the detached keyboard hopeless feeling bother you when you are on the road because it cleanly and securely attaches to the back of the iPad with no keyboard exposed. Hope this helps.

It’s an IPad and not a MacBook!

I went on a exploration of the new 2021 iPad’s. I started off with the IPad Air. I then exchanged it for the IPad Pro 11 and then decided to exchange it for my final destination: IPad Pro 12.9. I must say I was impressed with all three IPad’s. However, what it came down to for me was screen real estate. I certainly researched the various new iPads’ before making my decision. There is a lot of tech reviews on YouTube and perhaps even on the the reviews here at Best Buy where uses share that the IPad falls short from being a computer like MacBook. First and foremost, let me just first start out by saying, this is a tablet and not a MacBook. Tech reviewers seem to not be able to grasp the concept that they are two different Apple products that offer two different OS’s. If you looking for a full system that offers software without limitations then, MacOS or MacBook is going to be your best fit. However, you need functionality of daily productivity suites such as Microsoft Office. The IPad line up will support that endeavor. Most don’t seem to understand Apple’s business model. Sure, they put the M1 chip into the iPad but just because it’s in the MacBook Pro doesn’t mean it’s a MacBook. I weighed out the options. Certainly, the M1 chip is going to pack power which from a long term perspective means somewhat future proofing. If Apple released a MacBook OS to replace IPad OS than it would completely defeat their meaning of differentiation between their two product lines. If you are a photographer or videographer and are looking for excellent portability. Then, an IPad is for you. If you are a media consumption junking and like to browse the web, check email, read news and don’t like having a keyboard attached. Then an IPad is for you. Lastly, if you are an artist or student and like taking notes and enjoy using a touch screen in lieu of using a mouse for navigational purposes, than the IPad is for you. It is preference and I feel the IPad OS could use some improvements but the usability for all the things I have mentioned is completely feasible. Some say, well it’s over priced but is it? The features are a trade off and when you weigh out the features, the cost is justified. I feel the Apple Keyboard for the IPad is overpriced but it’s Apple and they can get away with it. I elected to use the Logitech Combo Touch keyboard and I find it extremely competitive and cost effective in contrast. After all, Logitech is licensed to design products for Apple so it makes sense. At the end of the day, don’t get it confused. An IPad isn’t going to be like a MacBook. Perhaps someday outside of the upcoming IPad OS 15 release, Apple with manage to integrate more features to support the power of the M1 but until then, it still is an amazing piece of technology. With that being said, I recommend this product as long as you understand that you purchase this tech with the full understanding that it isn’t going to be a MacBook.

This case is such a game changer. I used to hate the bulky keyboards some other brands offer for ipads until I came across this case that serves as protection but also a way to house a computer and a mouse. The only issue is one of the keys fell off and I haven’t been able to get it fixede.

I’ve used this keyboard folio now for long enough that I think I can make a reasoned comparison with my old folio (Magic Keyboard). This has similar contact points that draw power from the IPad Pro for the keyboard lighting and to transfer keystrokes from the folio to the iPad. It uses magnets to seal the folio when it’s closed. The kickstand flap on the rear, to support the display when on a desk or table, also have magnets to help hold it closed when it’s not in use. The build quality has so far impressed! The fabric that covers the folio is sealed at the edges of the folio in much the same manner as was done on the Magic Keyboard, but the fabric is MUCH more robust. The Magic Keyboard had a delicate, thin rubber fabric that proceeded to crack and separate at these edge seals, and the rubber then gradually worked loose and peeled away exposing the inner guts of the Magic Keyboard. I used that folio for years, but it was a taped up mess for all but a few months of its life. Time will tell but first impressions of the fabric on this Logitech folio and the seals at the edges would be: This is like Kevlar compared to Magic Keyboard’s cellophane. It has a nice textured surface that stands up well to hard use. I’m expecting to use this now for the rest of my iPad’s life. I need to explain the four star rating. One star was dropped due to a usability issue that was apparent when comparing how I used the Magic Keyboard vs the Logitech Folio. The Magic Keyboard’s design allows you to easily use it on my lap on the sofa or bed and make use of its keyboard. The Logitech Folio is more dependent on having a flat surface under it so that the kickstand can adequately support the iPad. I include that as part of the review because the Magic Keyboard excelled the Logitech Folio in that one characteristic and that would be the only one! For further comparison, if I was rating the Magic Keyboard here, It would get a two or three star rating, dragged down severely due to its poor fit and finish quality. I felt I had to knock off something on the Logitech but was only allowed to rate in whole stars. Honestly, it’s more of a four and three quarters in my mind.

This keyboard case hasn’t disappointed me since I’ve taken it home. I’m typing this review with the Logitech keys right now, in fact. I think that the only thing I would be how you open the case. It’s not ergonomic and can be quite difficult. Otherwise, this is a very solid and easy to use product.

I like the overall feel of the keyboard. However, there are some dimension issues that causes you to have to circulate around it a few times around the volume button. I plan to return this item for another. Hopefully this will better assist. Also there seems to be a gap from the keyboard to the iPad itself. I do like the protection aspect of the case. Overall decent case.

I believe this setup may be the best alternative to the more expensive Apple branded keyboard cases. However, it hasn’t held up nearly as long as I believe it should have. Within the first year of having it, I had to replace it via the Logitech support site. There were and are connectivity issues, even with the new replacement. As I type this review, the onscreen keyboard is still present, regardless of the many settings Logitech Support had me double-check over and over. Also, the ‘9’ and ‘Z’ keys have fallen off from light use. The case really feels more protective than Apple’s keyboard folio case. However, the case began to warp after about two months! It no longer fits flush against the edges of the iPad. I love that you can detach it from the keyboard and view the screen at the angle of your choosing. I would choose the initial functionality of this keyboard folio case over any other case I researched and tried prior to purchasing. The overall functionality and lack of durability over even a short period of time already has me in the market to buy another less than a year and a half of owning it. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend purchasing it.

I had been going back and forth for months about this keyboard and I finally bought it. I had been using the other Logitech folio keyboard(The one with out the trackpad). It was a toss up between this and the Apple Magic Keyboard but after extensive research and trying them both I went with this one. This keyboard has all the function keys that the Apple one doesn’t. I love the detachable feature. Button feedback is good not much lag.

This keyboard case is great! First, the cons…it’s a little bit thick and heavy and I’m not sure how much it will hold stains into the fabric. When I first got it, it kept becoming unresponsive until I’d detach the keyboard and then reattach it. I think it’s because I tested in the the store and x’ed out of the update dialog. After that, it just said I was up to date. I had to google how to force it to update. No connectivity issues since then. It also takes up a lot of space when using it in your lap, but I’m tall so I have more space than some would. Now the pros: the keyboard works great and has good travel. The touchpad gives iPadOS a whole different dynamic, though I’m used to using tap to click on my iMac’s trackpad and that doesn’t work here. The case feels sturdy and the dark gray looks professional. Aside from this being cheaper than the Magic Keyboard, the main reason I chose it over that is the ability to remove the keyboard completely and still have protection on the iPad. The kickstand is more sturdy than previous trifold cases I’ve used. Overall, I’m pretty happy with my purchase.

GREAT new Folio! Combo touch is a huge upgrade to the last versions. It offers great protection and versatility, connection is instant and powered via the ipad. Keyboard Attaches with very strong magnets with space for Apple Pencil to attach. My only complaint is that it’s incredibly hard to open, there is no finger or thumb slot in which to grip and force the magnets apart. I used my finger nail in the apple pencil slot but must remove the Apple Pencil first. I strongly recommend Apple Pencil pro. (Here’s so quick art i made with it :-)…)

Hey! Thanks for the positive review of the Logitech Combo Touch! It sounds like it's a great fit for you.
The detachable magnetic keyboard definitely seems like a major convenience, especially for switching between laptop and tablet mode easily. And it's reassuring to hear that the typing experience is smooth and the case provides good protection for your iPad.
