This was a nice little black & white printer when it functioned. Unfortunately it stopped feeding the paper properly after 4 months. Very disappointing.

Worst printer I've ever made the mistake of buying, and that's saying a lot. Requires reboot and reinstall between every print job, if you're luck. Simply stopped working after a month.

Replacement for a larger Brother printer we were using in the office that crapped out an early death. This little dynamo fits the bill as a replacement. It has a much smaller footprint than most printers, including our previous one, which is great in a small office space. While it is smaller, it does everything we need it to do. The set up out of the box was a breeze. I think it took about 10 minutes from the time I cut open the tape on top of the box to printing pages! Basically upack, plug in, download the app on your phone or computer/tablet etc and follow the prompts. Super easy. Hooked up to wi-fi easily. It is set up for auto updates and low ink notices, which is more convenient than asking it to look for updates. So this one is black and white only, which is perfect for our basic doc printing needs in the office. This means less cost for ink in the future. They give 2 months free of the ink refill subscription program. I am not sure how long we will need to stay signed up for that. I guess we will see how long the cartridges last since there is only the one color. As for performance, it is quick and prints clear smear free pages. Copy works great from glass or paper feed. Scan is seamless as well and scans to your chosen destination, dropbox, google, email etc. The HP Smart app is user friendly and can also be used for other purposes like scanning and mobile faxing. So far this is a 5 star office purchase that I recommend. We print hundreds of pages every month. This will get a lot of use.

Compact and fairly quiet, this HP black and white laser jet printer is a beast for your home office. If you don’t need color for printing, a black and white laser jet is perfect. I’ve printed lots of shipping labels from a popular clothing reselling app without any issues. It has also been great for printing master copy worksheets at home to copy at work for my students. This laser jet printer claims to print up to 21 pages per minute and it stands up to that claim. It’s super quick! It is also a scanner- also black and white- which in my testing has been more clearly scanned than others I have tried. All of the buttons are on top. Connecting to my home wifi was a breeze and after the initial set up which was also easy, I was printing crisp copies in no time. Being able to print from my phone is so simple it’s been a game changer for me. My phone connects to the wifi at home and seamlessly prints through the printer that is also connected to wifi. No more fussing with ink cartridges or running low on a color- just a black and white toner cartridge that has far less upkeep than any color ink printer I have used. If you don’t need color for printing, this black and white HP laser printer will be the home office tech you never knew you needed.

HP M140W - solid little printer.

The HP M140W is HP’s compact, stylish, and affordable black-and-white laser printer for home or office use. It is the smallest laser printer I’ve ever seen and sports a scanner that’s not much larger than a legal sheet of paper. The copy function makes it a convenient addition to any SOHO setup. The out of the box experience is easy enough. The gorilla in me just started pulling at anything orange, and essentially that’s the strat. The toner needs to be removed and a ring pulled from the side. I wasn’t certain about this step, but I did double check the quick start guide and knew I should have just gone with the gorilla instinct. Once everything was removed and the toner reinstalled, it was a simple plug in a play. The printer is really compact, measuring only slightly longer than an A4 sheet of paper. The depth isn’t too far off the same. However to use the printer, you do have to fold the front down and load paper. That increases the printer’s size, but is a necessity given the need for a paper tray. It is odd essentially having a non-hidden paper tray on a laser. Plugging in the laser, you’re going to need to download the HP Smart app. Yes, this printer requires a smartphone to setup, and I’m not certain there is any way to set it up otherwise. That said, it’s also a wireless printer, and there is no USB port on it. That said, network discoverability of printers is pretty idiot proof these days. I fired up the app, and after being prompted to subscribe to toner, and a few other upsells, let me connect my printer to wifi and get it running. While the app prompts you to share it with other users via text or other sharing mechanism, never fear, native AirPrint is here. Once you figure out the connected IP address, you can visit it in a PC browser to get to more advanced settings. The password is the ‘PIN’ found on a sticker near the serial number inside the printer by the toner. Once logged in there, you can configure SNMP, change IP configuration settings, and a bunch of other stuff nobody does anymore. From print to first page out it’s fairly fast, at less than 10 seconds. Printing is fast and simple - with a rated 21ppm. I had no trouble finding the printer via my Chromebook, iOS devices, Windows PC, and Mac. Normal printer sharing, and AirPrint seem to handle connectivity pretty universally. Page quality is pretty good for entry level. Larger solid black sections can get uneven, but text is nice and crisp. Toner isn’t too expensive, with a 1000 page toner costing around $52 give or take. I’ll give black and white lasers a huge advantage for most home users. These printers will outlast most people’s daily causal printing needs far better than ink jets, and their dry, and high maintenance ink cartridges. Lasers are so crisp and nice. Also who needs color? If all you print is airline tickets, concern barcodes, or other occasional forms: laser is best. And the M140w does this quite well. Overall HP’s M140w is a solid entry level performer, with a compact form factor that blends nicely into any office. I find this a good backup printer for my guest room, and let’s them print their airline tickets when necessary. I highly would recommend this to any light use user. Color is great, but the headache free maintenance of a laser always wins my recommendation. Another solid HP printer.

Not only is it easy to operate the best part was I hired the Geek Squad to install it and then demonstrate how it works! They are very professional, thoughtful and PATIENT. Furthermore, I've been purchasing color printer's forever and never used the color. So this time I saved money by purchasing the black HP laser.

For those looking for a laserjet printer without the heft/size of a conventional one, this might be worth a look. I've had several laser printers and all of them have been relatively beefy in terms of size/weight. I usually have to put them on a separate stand or cabinet due to their size but, this M140W is rather tiny by comparison. It's the smallest laserjet HP offers so it's better suited for that home office or small business where you need fast, efficient printing but not having to worry about where you're going to put this thing. It's an HP so print quality is very good. Print speed is also good at 21ppm. As with most other printers, including HP, this is also usable through their app so you can print on the go or do things wirelessly if you need. The toner for this is also relatively inexpensive at around ~$50 or so which is really nice. Haven't used up a whole toner yet so not sure on output per cartridge but I'm guessing it should be good for a couple thousand prints or so. Overall, biggest takeaway for this printer is it's a small laserjet. Really like the footprint on this as I can now relocate my older, bigger laserjet somewhere else and still be able to print via the app with this smaller one.

I've seen and bought hundreds of HP printers for office environments and never owned one for a long time. They have supreme command of the laser printer market since as far as I can remember and very little complications and failures. This HP is the first HP printer I've owned since the late 90s when an unusual printer that lasted over 35 years was zapped. I must admit I am very impressed by this HP printer in general its functionality is exceptional it's scanning capacity above standard and its entire HP smart software alone makes this printer a powerhouse for any home, small business, and cloud remote operations. What HP exceeds at is a synergy of software and hardware working together to create an above average product. Once you learn HP smart you can do just everything: OCR picture captures documents copies, email and at high speed stunning black and white print results to and from cloud storage with or without your mobile devices both to and from the printer. Within the first day in fact, I was in use as a standard computer printer, I spent the rest of the time working the exceptional possibilities that this printer still held with multiple programable operations and its remote access. Comes with a standard ink replacing program app that replenishes your ink and matches the latest trend in subscription ink services that can avoid any downtime for when ink runs out. Its silent operation and 3d objects scanner add quality to its scan, and it comes with its cloud and support software on the Internet that give a fast reliable access and that's directly to the printer. Very reasonable and cost efficient. .

I haven't used this printer a lot since I purchased it, but it's done a good job on everything up to this point in regards to printing and scanning. It's for home use and so far, it's been well worth the less than $90 price tag on sale.

Low price point that comes with some shortcomings

The HP Laser Jet M140w is a no-frills entry point laser printer that has a low entry cost into the world of black and white laser printing. This low-cost entry point comes at a sacrifice to normal quality of life features. If this printer is connected to your computer via USB cable, then you should have no connectivity issues. It will be recognized by Windows 11 easily when adding the printer. To use the wireless functionality, you will need a smartphone. There is no display on this printer to allow us to navigate the menus. Everything must be set up using the app. That in its own might be a deal breaker to most because it’s another app you need on your phone to control your printer. However, the app is only good for setting up the printer. After setting up the printer wirelessly, sending print jobs over the network to the printer causes issues at times. The display on the printer will display a series of two-digit error codes which makes it not as intuitive to debug print errors. I had hoped to pull up the app for it to tell me what was wrong with the printer. However, the app does not do anything but tell you if the printer is online or offline. Since the printer flashes a series of two-digit codes, searching the internet for the meaning of error codes was difficult. After lots of internet research, I believe the stack of blank papers had slipped out of the tray causing the printer to think it was out of paper. Therefore, make sure the surface you set your printer up is level to prevent any slippage of the stack of paper. In addition, the only way to get the printer to start up again was to do a power cycle of the printer. I also encountered Wi-Fi disconnect causing the printer to appear offline to all the computers on my network. Another thing this printer lacks is an automatic duplex printing mode. Sometimes when asking the printer to print in double-sided mode, the computer will prompt you to put the printed page back in the printer and click continue the prompt to print the other side of the page. Other times it won’t ask, you can just stop. This means that you will have to cleverly figure out how to print again to finish the double-sided printing. If you are just looking for a small footprint black and white laser printer at the lowest cost possible, this will work if you have a mobile device around to set it up if you want the wireless features. However, I believe the lack of detailed error logs on a screen will cause headaches to the user.
