I bought two Shark air purifiers to reduce dust in my house. I waited five months to review them because I wanted to give them a fair shot. Unfortunately, they haven't done much to lower the amount of dust in my home. I wish I could return them.

Shark did a lot of things right and a few things wrong with its new Never Change Air Purifier Max. The biggest thing they did right was build the Max around a long-life HEPA filter that, despite the product's name, DOES have to be changed -- but only once every five years or so. That is a lot less often than most other air purifiers and should save you a bunch of money because the filters are usually very expensive. The big. round main filter, which captures the really small stuff in the air, is aided by two additional first-stage DebrisDefense filters that fit into intakes that stick out on each side of the barrel shaped appliance. One of the washable sheet type filters used here removes big debris like dust and pet hair while a second carbon filter sheet helps eliminate odors. All filters are easy to remove and replace (or clean in the case of the first stage filters) which makes maintenance a breeze. And fairly economical compared to other brands. Overall operation easy too, with a top-mounted backlit control panel (a much appreciated improvement) with simple touch controls. In most cases, they are not really needed though since the default AUTO mode keeps constant tabs on air quality and adjusts fan speeds to deal with real-time conditions. Most of the time, the Max runs in a whisper-quiet low mode but the internal fan can crank up to much noisier hurricane force when air quality declines -- which can happen when you are cooking certain foods or something else messes up the air quality. A color-coded LED circular display on the front changes colors to let you know when air quality is bad. Blue is good while yellow, orange and red denote high particulates. There is also a number display in the center of the circle display that denotes air quality, with 100 being perfect and anything less than that needing work. The color circle also flashes to remind you when it is time to clean the side filters. A built- in sensor, dubbed CleanSense IQ, does a remarkably good job of determining air quality and automatically adjusting fan speed to deal with those conditions. Even better it will power down into a barely running eco mode after five minutes of 100 percent air quality, saving electricity and improving filter life. The control panel gives you the ability to dim or turn off the display, as well as manually adjust fan speeds, run the Max on a timer ( another welcome addition from some earlier models) , or change what information appears in the display. Another big plus with the Max is that it claims to have enough power to clean the air in up to 1400 square feet of space. That's an entire house for some folks and a lot more capcity than you usually see in an air purifier of this size. As for the overall design, it looks something like a high-tech garbage can. Constucted of sturdy white plastic, it is fairly light so can easily be moved around as needed using a built in hand-hold cutout in the back. My only reservation is with a new feature that is supposed to improve odor control. This consists of a small round "odor neutralizer technology cartridge" that screws into the top of the Max. It promises to produce a "fresher smelling home." This probably appeals to those who like chemical air fresheners but I am not one of them. Even on the lowest setting, I found the smell a bit overpowering and distracting at times. And I was alarmed by the long list of scary warnings associated with handling the cartridge. The good new is you can just not install this thing and be happy with plain old clean air. The Max really doesn't care. And that is one less consumable you have to replace. Despite my misgivings on that front, I see the Shark Never Change Air Purifier Max as a strong contender in the category, thanks mostly to its chart-topping 5-year filter and impressive ability to clean the air in an entire house.

    Best Air Purifier

The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX has been a great addition to my home. It could be a whole home purifier as it will work on up to 1400 sq ft. It came with 4 items: the Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX, the Debris Defense Washable Filter, the NeverChange HEPA filter, and the Odor Neutralizer Technology Cartridge. I tried to place mine as centrally as possible on my floorplan. It has a mostly white look with a black air vent grill and buttons, so it will fit in most places very unobtrusively. Setup took 2 minutes and was as simple as taking the wrapper off the HEPA filter, putting in the Odor Cartridge, taking off a sticker, and plugging the unit in. I powered it on and it immediately began to analyze the quality the air. The display on the front has numbers that show the clean air percentage, PM1 particles, PM2.5 particles, and PM10 particles, and it is circled by a ring that changes colors with the air quality: from blue (good), to yellow (Fair), to red (Poor). The top of the unit has a number of buttons including for power, adjusting fan speed, Auto mode, air info, brightness of the display, shut-off timer, dust filter life, and a child lock. For me, the biggest issues in air quality are dust, cooking smells, and cat litter. At first I just tried the air purification and it did a great job. One of my kids is particularly sensitive to dust and I could tell after the first day that the dust was not accumulating at the same rate at all. Cooking smells from the kitchen can often be quite heavy in all parts of the house with the right dish, even with the hood fan on, but it did a great job on garlic and strong seasoning smells. On top of purifying the air, the unit has an Odor Neutralizer that you can adjust to receive a light positive smell. The job it did on eliminating any lingering cat odors, on top of the dust reduction and cooking smell reduction, made it the top of the line in my book. I have used other air purifiers that require the main filter to be either interchanged or washed quite frequently, and if I forget to do that regularly I always feed weird about using it. But I don't have to worry about that with the Shark. The NeverChange HEPA filter is good for up to 5 years. There is some regular maintenance that will need to be done, just to be clear. There are dust filters that require a sweeping when the unit tells me, but they are easy to get to and take out, and they can be cleaned and reinstalled quickly. I mostly ran the unit on Auto Mode which uses the air quality to determine the fan speed. Once optimal quality is achieved in Auto Mode, it will automatically run in Eco mode to increase the life of the filters and the unit. The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Max wouldn't be noticeable at all as quiet as it is except for the amazing job it does at making the air not only smell clean but smell better too. It has done a remarkable job of making the air purified in the amount of time that I have owned it, and I recommend it highly for any use in any room.

I wanted to love it. It looks like a little droid. But alas, there seems to be a design flaw. When using auto, it doesn’t seem there’s enough air draw to determine if the air is “contaminated.” I have another shark that works perfectly. I returned this and decided to get the Levoit Core 600s

I never had an air purifier. I was always skeptical as to how would I know it was working or doing anything. My mind has been changed. Upon setting it up it indicated a 65 percent clean air in my den. Mind you I have a Golden Retriever so I wasn't expecting fully clean air. In a few hours it read 100 percent clean air and it stayed there. The unit is on AUTO so the fans speed up when necessary to filter the air. I moved the unit one floor up to another room and it still read 100 percent. OK maybe it cleaned that air too. I cant really tell at this point. This all changed when I was finished cooking breakfast that included bacon and a little smoke. I happened to go to the room that has the unit running and noticed the unit, which is a floor away, registering much less than 100 percent and the fan running at almost full speed. It also detected particles in the air. In short time it was back to 100 percent. Now I’m more convinced there is something to this. The unit seems to be doing what it says it does. Included in the unit is a small puck that can be adjusted to release a clean aroma. The QR code on a sticker attached to the unit takes you to the manual and all the info you need for the unit. No manual was packed in the box. The manual references a remote but I did not find one in the box. The unit is super quiet, you forget its on. I like the fact that there is a 5 year life of the HEPA filter. I thought it would be like printers, the printer is cheap but the ink costs a fortune. Likewise with filters for air purifiers, but not this one. No need to constantly change it. That is a big plus for this unit. You know all the cost going in. So I am now a converted skeptic and realize its a good idea to have this unit running in my home. As of now all the windows are closed and central air running. In the fall the windows will be open and there should be more work for this unit, I’m sure it can handle it.

    Best Purifier Yet!

I was super excited when I got this item, and reviewed it! I own multiple air purifiers, and some works better than most. A lot of the ones I have does clean the air somewhat, but not like I was expecting it to. Most purifiers that I have, usually only clear the air for a small room and that's about it. That is why I was shocked to hear about this one, which purify 1400 ft, which is the size of a lot of people's houses nowadays. I was also extremely excited and curious to know how a filter for one of these purifiers do not have to be changed for five years! I own lots of purifiers over the years, and I've never had a purifier like this one. This purifier literally does clean air of 1400 ft.² and probably a little more, because when I went to my basement, parts of that the main living space smell clean also! I believe that this is not even the most expensive air purifier I have, but is by far the best one! I hope that the air filter really does not have to be changed for five years, because that by self will save a lot of money. The biggest surprise of this purifier with it being so small, is that I really breathe a lot better since I've been using it, and it's not even close compared to the other four! I also like the really nice scent that it has that I don't have with any of the others. The only problem is, that you may not want to run continuously like when you're asleep, because it kind of dries you out like it did me. I have yet to find out other thing in the next few weeks that I may love about it, but this is very cost-effective for everything it delivers!

I've been using the Shark NeverChange Air Purifier for about a week and a half. I'm very impressed with what I'm seeing so far. The design on the NeverChange Purifier looks futuristic and really cool but the features are simple and very easy to use. There is no app, and no remote comes with it, so you have to physically touch the machine to operate it. That works for me but may not work for those who may need a remote or app. The thing that sticks out to me is the up to 5 year life on the filter. This is a game changer since most air purifier filters usually last a year or so depending on how much you use them. Since using this device I have noticed the smells dissipating more quickly after cooking. We use it in an open common area between kitchen and living room and it seems to work very well. Both of my kids suffer from allergies and while right now they are mild because of the time of year, I'm hoping this device helps ease their symptoms a bit. As far as functionality, the machine is super easy to use. The front display shows the current air quality in your home or area. If you're further away from the machine it will show a round circle of blue if your air quality is good, yellow if its fair and red if the air quality is deemed bad. There are 5 fan speeds from high to low 1-4 and then there's auto mode which recognizes when your air quality goes down and it ramps up the fan. Auto mode works for me since there's no remote or app and while cooking something in the frying pan, it just starts ramping up. There's also a time for when you want the air purifier to turn off and a child lock. Also included is an odor neutralizer that releases a nice scent while the purifier is running. Perfect to get those bad smells out of your house more quickly. I really like this device and I think it works well. I'm most looking forward to not replacing the filter so often. I do wish it came with an app or remote at this price point but to just set it and forget it is also nice.

The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Max is another quality product by the wonderful people who create Shark products for our homes. The purifier boasts a 5 Year filter life with timely maintenance of course. As you unbox the air purifier there are very clear directions on removing the plastic from the HEPA filter before you turn it on for the first time. To do this you simply turn the panel on the bottom of the purifier and remove the filter. Once you reinstall the filter you simply turn the panel to the locked position and place the air purifier on level ground. You then install the odor neutralizing pod on the top by turning it until you hear a click and then you adjust the intensity as desired. Once you turn the air purifier on you can place it on auto and allow it to sense the air quality in the room. It will adjust itself based on the air quality. The air quality displays as a percentage on the front display. The once issue I have with my current air purifier is the cost of the 2 filters that get clogged fairly quick. The Shark has 2 debris screens that prevent larger particles from being sucked into the HEPA filter. These screens can simply be vacuumed and wiped down on a monthly basis. You should also remove the HEPA filter and vacuum it to keep it clean. The air purifier has the ability to exchange the air in a 1400 square ft space in 1 hour. The air purifier is very quiet and the lights are dimmable so it's not distracting at night. Overall I am very satisfied by its performance in the first few weeks of using it and believe this will live up to the high quality of shark home products

PROS: - Filter lasts up to 5 years - Great for large rooms/areas - Quiet (for its size) - Built-in air freshener - Large display shows air quality CONS: - Only comes in one color Between the forest fires and usual seasonal allergies, this year (2023) has been rough for my family members that have asthma. We usually have an air purifier in every room of the house (especially in the summer and winter), but it really becomes annoying keeping track of which filters need to be replaced at what interval. This is arguably my favorite thing about this Shark air purifier: I don't need to worry about replacing the filter any time soon! It's a large air purifier, but the trade off is that it can provide "coverage" for a large room/area. Shark rates this for up to 1400 sq ft, which is great for smaller homes/apartments. We have ours setup near the living room and dining room, and it's working great! We hardly notice it, mostly because it's so quiet for its size. Sure, the fan will start to get loud if there are a lot of particulates in the air (like when someone is cooking or one of the kids forgets to shut the door/window on a smokey day), but the majority of the time you can't really hear it during normal activities. While the filter doesn't need to be swapped out for up to 5 years, one thing will need to be replaced more regularly: the air freshener that you can place at the top of the purifier. This is 100% optional, but I really like it. You can buy replacement cartridges off Shark's website.

I bought a Shark Never Change Air Purifier 6/8/25. This is my initial review. I set-up the purifier in my living room per the instructions, and turned it on at 12:30 pm. It started at the "auto" setting which I did not change. Withing a few minutes the air quality indicator indicated that my air quality was on the high end of poor. The air quality gradually improved. By 4:00 pm the air quality indicated clean air (98). My condo is 2,300 sq. ft. I moved the air purifier to my bedroom, which is on the far side of my condo. When I turned it on the air quality indicated 88. Within 15 minutes it was indicating 98. This unit is rated for 1,400 sq ft. However, I firmly believe that the air in my bedroom was being cleaned while the purifier was operating in my living room. There is no way the air in my bedroom would have immediately been rated 88 otherwise. I like the odor neutralizer. I may try putting a drop or 2 essential oil in it. It remains to be seen, how long the filter lasts. I had it standing right next to my recliner. It is very quiet. The air is drawn through the purifier by what looks like an impeller. It is not a traditional bladed fan. I imagine this is why it is so quiet. When I selected this purifier, I considered that I may buy a 2nd smaller one for my bedroom. At this point I do not believe this will be necessary.
