Within a few minutes of opening the box, I was online and working on this Acer Chromebook – it is that easy to use. The setup is made easier if you have a Gmail account, as many people do. Just enter your account information and verify and you will be online and able to download updates, applications and access your Gmail and G Suite products to which you may have access. The speed of accessing webpages and email is more than adequate – I did not notice any kind of delay. The Ryzen 3 processor in this thing is supposed to have tested to specs near an Intel i7 chip. The Full HD display is every bit as nice as the HD on my much more expensive business laptop thanks to an AMD Radeon graphics processor. There whole thing is very lightweight thanks to a solid state hard drive for memory, but it still appears to be very sturdy. In fact, it claims to meet a military standard for toughness, (MIL-STD 810-H, the latest version of this standard), but I have not drop-tested it and do not plan to do so. Still, it gives me peace of mind to know that it can withstand a little rough handling. I appreciate that it has two USB ports, one on each side – one more than my expensive machine - and it also has all the other ports I need: headphone jack, HDMI port for presenting, USB rectangular (Type C), and MicroSD for my photos. With only 64Gb of memory, however, I will have to get used to storing more things in my cloud accounts. The 360 capability is nice for watching video or sharing documents such as those that you want to sign by drawing with your finger on the touchscreen. The hinges seem very sturdy and the whole thing moves much better than a “yoga” machine I used to own from another manufacturer. Acer claims 10 hours of battery life and I have not used it for that long, but it has exceeded 8 hours. The only real drawback I found is that the keyboard is small, taking up only about half of the real estate available on the surface. I know there are things going on beneath the surface that limit the keyboard size, but I could have done with a smaller touchpad or perhaps moving the pad to the side rather than give up almost 50% of keyboard size. All in all, this is a very competitive Chromebook at a very affordable price and suitable for just about every member of the family except the very young, the power user and the gamer. If I get 3 years’ use out of it, it will have been well worth it.

What a treat it has been to work and play with this brand new convertible Chromebook with a beautiful narrow-bezel 14 inch full HD screen, stunning aluminum lid, spacious back-lit keys, and AMD Ryzen 3 3000 Series processor. It looks amazingly like its more expensive sibling, the Spin 713, but with a bigger screen. Yes, this laptop has a 14-inch screen, and the Spin 713’s spec is only 13.5 inches! Admittedly, their design is different in that the 713 has a 3:2 aspect ratio, and the 714 has the more commonly seen 16:9, the latter being better for media consumption and the former having more available real estate for office work. But I am typing this review with the Microsoft Word app, and have no usability complaints whatsoever. How is the Ryzen and is 4gb of memory enough? For my purposes, the Ryzen 3 has easily and speedily handled every task I have thrown at it, and 4 gigs of memory has been plenty for my work and play. This Ryzen chip was designed for use with chrome OS, and it shows. There is a fan, and after hours of work, I could sometimes hear it turn on, but it never bothered me. This Spin has not bogged down on me at all, and all tasks have been completed with aplomb. I seldom use the Linux apps, but did turn on the feature to install and use several apps, including Thunderbird mail. I had no problems, but I think you would be pressing the limits of this laptop’s memory if you wanted to keep several Linux apps going at once. The 64gb of internal storage is on an eMMC chip, and not an SSD. It has not slowed me down. I stuck a 256gb card in the micro-SD slot, and have more than enough storage for my future use. The card installs flush and does not protrude at all. There are ports aplenty. USB-C on both sides, and you can charge from either. And there are USB-A ports on either side as well, and an earphone jack. The power button is on the left side, and the volume control on the right. The chassis on this device are MIL-STD 810H certified. That means this laptop can stand some punishment. It is so pretty, I would never want to intentionally test that specification! The sturdy hinge allows the screen to be folded back for the tent mode, and then all the way back to use as a tablet. When you fold the screen all the way back, the keyboard is disabled. The battery life is specified to be up to 10 hours. I have already used it for eight solid hours on a full charge, and it is still going strong. I have no reason to doubt that spec. I think this Spin 514 Chromebook should be considered by anyone looking for an attractive midrange feature-rich Chrome OS device. Streamed movies render beautifully. Office work is a cinch. Honestly, this a lot of machine for a great price. If you are considering a Chromebook, you will want to give this one a look.

    Versatile, mid-range, solid Chromebook

The Acer Chromebook Spin 514 is a convertible 14” laptop with a 1080p HD touchscreen built with the latest AMD RyzenTM 3 3250C Dual-Core Mobile Processor that provides plenty of performance, with its built-in APU/GPU and great battery life. It came with 64 GB eMMC storage which is more than enough for general web use and apps, but if you plan to download lots of media files and large documents, you may want to also take advantage of the microSD card slot for additional storage expansion. The 4 GB of memory is sufficient for running many Chrome web tabs, watching YouTube videos, Netflix and much more, though it will get a bit sluggish if you never close unused apps. It came with a 45W USB-C charger which helps fully charge the Lithium battery only in a couple of hours. I have not been able to use it for 10 hours consecutively, but I can say it lasted at least 8 hours of mixed use, mostly web, youtube and Netflix. This chromebook has more external USB ports than many much more expensive, high-end laptops. Very thoughtful layout, 1 USB-C and 1 USB-A 3.0 slots on each side, for a combined total of 4 USB ports. Additionally, it still has a good’ol standard headphone jack. The built-in Webcam, microphone and speakers complete the package that makes teleconferencing easy peasy, It worked great when I tried it with Zoom, Teams and Duo. The keyboard has a nice solid feel to it, just enough key travel and most of all it is backlit, which is great while watching TV in the dark. The touchpad is rather large, which makes the wrist pad quite wide, pushing the keyboard further up closer to the screen. It will take some getting used to from my other Chromebooks and Windows laptops. The overall build quality is solid, a bit heavy for its size, but it’s probably because of its MIL-STD 810H rating that reinforces the chassis and will keep it functional and one piece if dropped, which I was only willing to try a slide off the couch onto the carpeted floor :-) I also have an older Acer 15.6” touchscreen chromebook that’s much larger, but only weighs about 0.5 lbs more than this Spin 514 that weighs just under 3.5lbs. It’s certainly light enough to take on travel/vacation. It works well with Chromebook apps and Android Apps from the Google Play store, which automatically loaded once I logged on with my gmail account that was previously used on two other Chromebooks. The durable 360 degree hinge allows you to view at any angle, turn it into a tablet, or stand it up as a tent when watching movies in bed, etc...versatile!

I initially loved this Acer Chromebook Spin 514, but I keep having issues with it. I took it to the Geek Squad about 10 days after I purchased it because it kept giving me the "Aw Snap" message after crashing the websites I was trying to use as well as my emails. It was supposedly fixed and suggested I not have so many tabs open at once. Made no sense to me because my much older Samsung Chromebook never had that problem and still does not. This problem keeps occurring so frequently that I'm taking it back and leaving it with the Geek Squad until they figure it out or replace it.

This is my 2nd acer chromebook spin. 1st was back In 2019 i believe. That one was great and served its purpose but started to slow down and it wasn’t spec’d like this model. This model is faster since it has an actual ryzen 3 cpu now. Very snappy and responsive. Touchscreen works as it should and screen resolution is very nice for what it is. My daughter uses this for her games, YouTube and some school stuff. She loves it better than her last one. This has a backlit keyboard too so that’s a plus. Battery life is exceptional. Last all day and you only have to charge at night. Well built, fast and simple yet solid and study design. I actually got this as an open box In store for an amazing price. Couldn’t be more happy with this chromebook. My daughter as well. Only gripe is that chromebooks need more storage and maybe at least 8gb of Ram.

Acer 14" Chromebook Spin 514 Convertible - 14” Full HD Touch – Ryzen 3 3250C– 4GB DDR4 Memory – 64GB eMMC Flash Memory The set up is easy. I unpacked the Chromebook, plugged it and pressed the power button on. A welcome page is the first thing you see. Click on the "let's go" button to begin logging in. Connect to your wifi, check and download the latest updates, sign in using your Google account, accept a few more terms and conditions and then it will walk through voice assistance. In order to save battery power, it will default to only being available while the Chrome is plugged in to power. To activate, press the Assistant button or say "ok google" anytime. There are also tips and tricks to set up your Chromebook. It was super easy to connect my printer. I don't have an android device to connect but I obviously have a Google account and it pulled up documents easily. I love how it's compatible with other Google devices or accounts. The Chromebook has full HD (1920x1080) touch capabilities and the latest AMD Ryzen 3 3250C Dual-Core Mobile Processor. The 14" bezel screen made of Gorilla Glass, offers more visual real estate. Though, I think there's some wasted space on the bottom of the screen. There is over an inch tall of black that runs along the bottom of the screen that is unusable and only holds the logo. That should be shrunk down to one third of it's size to allow more usable screen. It's highly durable with the military grade metal chassis. It also has a 360 degree hinge, so the cover can swing completely around which offers so much versatility. The backlit keyboard has concave keys for comfort and ease. For port accessibility there are USB-C ports and USB-A on both sides, and a headphone jack and microSD slot on the left. There is a front facing camera and microphone too. I would personally prefer the power cord to be longer too because I don't think it reaches far enough away when it's charging and I'm working on it. I'm not always right by an outlet. The Chromebook feels pretty heavy and thick for my personal preference but I don't plan on traveling with it. This is my fourth Chromebook, some Acer and some Google. It's not my favorite one, the Google Pixelbook Touchscreeen is, but the Acer Chromebook Spin is still a decent one to have. I appreciate the updated version with the faster processor and higher memory and durability. It will meet all of our needs. Our family loves Chromebooks for online learning, Google Meets, playing games, watching videos. It will adapt to all of your needs easily with the screen being able to rotate all the way around. It's especially great for the kids so they don't have to use my more expensive laptop. If you are looking for a laptop for your basic needs, this will be great. It always boots up quick, is easy to use and the display quality is great.

This is an excellent value for the money; I purchased it on a Memorial Day sale for around $225 for my daughter for school. Last year we purchased her older sister the Spin 513 chromebook for school. This is the updated model. For a child in school this works extremely well. The screen is clear and the ability to fold to tablet mode, etc is very useful. This model has a backlit keyboard (her older sister's Spin 513 from last year does not), and that's a nice feature. The speed and memory are fine for a school chromebook before college but might be slow or limited for advanced or business use. This one is a little bit bigger than her sister's, and it is fine but also at the maximum size that is easy for her to carry around in her backpack; I would not go any bigger for a middle school or high school chromebook. The battery does deliver the advertised long life. Her older sister's previous model has stood up well to being taken to and from school daily for a year and this one seems to be solidly constructed as well. Kids being kids, I did purchase the geek squad warranty on it for accidental damage though! My daughters like to draw and I purchased separately a USI pen. It works with the unit but I don't think we get all the advertised functions for pressure sensitivities, etc, but we may not have the right software loaded for it. In summary, this is our family's second chromebook of this series and both seem to be very well tailored for school use up to the 12th grade. Both have been a very good value for our needs, thus my 5 star rating. I don't think they would be ideal for my use for work but we didn't purchase them with that in mind.

This is the 3rd Chromebook I've had and they have all been easy to setup and use. Coming from Windows laptops my whole life, I like the fact these don't take any time to maintain. Updates happen automatically, antivirus software is included and all the productivity tools are connected to your Google account. From the time I took it out of the box, I was able to get everything setup and configured in about 10 minutes...however, there was a large update that needed to be downloaded and installed before I could really use it. Once that was done, it was all set to go. During the setup process, you connect it to your Google account and all your settings for Chrome, your photos and Drive are all linked automatically. Most of what I use laptops for these days are web-based and this Chromebook is perfect for that. The display is a touch screen and is bright enough to use outdoors in sunlight. It can also be flipped completely to use it like a tablet. Overall, I would recommend this laptop for anyone looking for using web-based tools or surfing.

I work in education and since the pandemic, we have been using Chromebooks for any virtual learning and meetings with parents and staff. I had been using an old school-issued Chromebook but saw this device and decided to give it a try. The speed and clarity of the video are amazing! I am working off the same school internet but I don't have issues with freezing or being dropped altogether. This is small enough to carry to work and home every day without issue. It lasts the whole school day on a single charge. I am able to switch between a work google account and my personal account easily. I also love the touch screen (something the school laptop did not have). I no longer worry about not being able to meet with students or parents online.

I purchased this for a Special Needs adult, and I can say it has been a great purchase for him. ChromeOS is very user friendly for someone who is not very tech savvy. Everything you need is easy to find and get to, without any bloatware or special features to get in the way The laptop itself is surprisingly durable even though it's mostly what i think is plastic. It's handled drops and dings with ease. Battery life is great for someone who forgets to plug things in often, assuming another big plus of ChromeOS.

If you’re a student or a business professional this is for you! If you want to game or edit video footage etc. then I’d say go with maybe a MacBook. With that out of the way, wow is this neat! Touch screen works well, heavy duty durable screen and laptop body. 4GB of RAM had me nervous due to me being use to 16-32GB, but for a chromebook it’s very optimized to use just the 4GB no issues still fast. Im an apple guy, but with it being able to fold and have a full size keyboard, at under $400 I’d choose this over an iPad. I’m stocked. I was able to score this for only about $359.99 on sale and it’s serving me well. Battery life also lasts about 10-12hrs…like I said if you’re someone who’s maybe a student/teacher or in real-estate this is the one for the best budget price.
