First off, I loved the Zero Escape series, especially the original 999, which I thought was one of the best games for the Nintendo DS. So I went into AI Somnium thinking it would be along the same vain. While it does have a similar style, The Somnium Files just felt disappointing. The story itself takes a while to get going and overall is pretty good (although your mileage may vary with how good the story is in the beginning due to the branching paths of the story). Perhaps I just got the most boring path. But as you reach the second half of the game, you won't want to put the game down so you can finish the story. The gameplay is the most disappointing. While technically the game can be classified as a visual novel so that gameplay isn't very important, after playing Zero Escape, I expected a bit more. There isn't any detective work/gameplay or puzzle-solving as the game packaging might make you believe. Everything is linear and the "gameplay" portions involves you making pretty arbitrary random choices where the punishment for choosing "wrong" is getting a game over and then you retrying and choosing the "right" choice. It can be a little bit frustrating at time since there is no way to know what is "right" besides just trying it. It was pretty disappointing in this regard. The extras in the Special Agent Edition are okay. The artbook doesn't have many pages and the stickers, etc aren't very exciting. I would have liked a steelbook case at least. I would have been much more disappointed if I had paid the full retail price for it (I got it on sale fortunately). I would say, get the game if you're looking for a good visual novel and are okay with the backward steps (in terms of gameplay) from Zero Escape.

Ive been waiting to play this game and it doesnt disappoint. The game story of very interesting and allows u to explore all possible outcomes if u want but you just have to be aware that this doesnt have your normal gameplay features but its still fun and compelling going into victims minds to solve the way they died! The artbook is nice the soundtrack is awesome but not sure if it was all really worth the price but i have no regrets because i want to support these unique games on the switch!

This is one of those visual novels that take the mind to a deep subconscious. A great story so far that’s shrouded in mystery with a cast of characters that move the story along.
