Effective but Annoying Portable Monitor for Mac
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am not UN-happy with this purchase, but it DOES require a little more finagling than I would prefer on my Mac. I am going back and forth about whether or not the inconvenience of to exchanging it for a similar device is worth the hassle of returning to the store, especially because I am not guaranteed any other device would work better. When it works, which it does more than it doesn’t, I am happy. I purchased this in early April 2024 and am using this semi-successfully on a 2022 MacBook Air with M2 chip. Since my MacBook only has USB-C ports, and this monitor only uses standard USB cable connections, I have to use a separate display adapter, but I already had one on hand for use with my regular HDMI standing monitor. This portable monitor does draw power from your laptop, so keep that in mind for battery usage and plug in if you have the option to do so. The driver installation disk that comes in the box is a CD, which my MacBook does not have a port for, so I used the Questions and Answers feature on BestBuy.com and did a web search for “DisplayLink Mac driver AOC USB monitor” as suggested. This successfully got me to the website by Synaptics that let me download the driver needed, which installs to the Applications folder as “DisplayLink Manger.” You do have to grant the application permission to see/record/mirror your screen in Settings when prompted in order for the portable monitor to work, and the DisplayLink Manager application has to be running continuously. It will show in the menubar at the top if successful, right by to the date and time. I was worried this might allow the installed software to share and record my screen to its servers, and I can’t confirm that is not happening, but the monitor still works with the internet and Bluetooth turned off, so I am assuming this is just a local share between devices as opposed to one being transmitted, and there doesn’t appear to be any mechanism to save a recording or connect to the web in the hardware itself. If privacy, security and PII is an absolute requirement for you, do additional research or pick another device. I started having minor inconveniences about 2 weeks after using it successfully. Sometimes, upon initial plug in, the portable monitor will show the “AOC” logo for a few seconds, but then go to black instead of initiating the screen mirror/extension. For one day I thought this was because my device was a dud, but since many of the online questions showed trouble connecting with Macs I did extended troubleshooting. I found that sometimes, the DisplayLink Manager application shut itself off after I disconnected my laptop and shut the lid to transport or put it in energy saver mode, so I have to manually start the app up again, and that startup can take a minute or two to detect the monitor. In addition, sometimes the USB and USB-C plugs on my laptop, the display adapter, and the monitor get jiggled enough that I have to unplug and replug them all back in securely for the signal to transmit. Sometimes both of these happen at the same time. For now, given that this monitor is designed to be portable, these seem to be reasonable annoyances. YMMV.

Allows flexibility when outlets are scarce
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great screen or additional screen. Powered by computer which minimizes the need for more wires. Can be used in portrait or landscape which gives edit flexibility. Downside is that it’s difficult to set up with an Apple computer.

tech compatibility issue if you have older compute
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Love the design of it. It has a built-in stand just like an old-style picture frame that you can stand on a desk or table. It also has a little carrying case. Doesn't seem to work with my older MacBook for which I really need an extra monitor. That part is disappointing as it seems I'll have to get tech assistance to see if it's possible to get it working. If I can't get it to work I'll have to return it. Bummer as I like the style of it's design & portability. So much larger screen to view than using phone or tablet. Hence the not so great rating. Could they not design monitors that will operate easily with most computers? Even older ones?

Amazingly lightweight but not reliable
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great price, wonderfully lightweight and doesn't require an outlet, so I can grab it and my MacAir and transition from desk to standing work super easy. However, the AOC worked on and off (mostly off) with my first dongle. Twice the monitor has quit working and I've had to google and download drivers. Also there are occasionally creepy messages that might involve Screen Mirroring. I've only owned it a couple months. I don't have time for stuff like this in my life, so sadly, I probably wouldn't buy it again. I reallyreallyreally want it to work reliably.

Posted .Hello RobinE, Sorry to hear about this issue with your AOC portable Monitor.
Please refer to the user manual located on the AOC website on how to set-up and configure the monitor: https://us.aoc.com/en-US/products/monitors/e1659fwu/downloads
Below are some troubleshooting tips: -Try using the plug and play feature of your computer. Make sure that both USB cables are connected to the computer's USB ports to provide enough power. It may take some time for your computer to connect. - If the above does not work. Depending on your computer OS version, it's possible you may need the Installation of USB Graphic software on your computer, called "DisplayLink". This software can be downloaded from the DisplayLink website. For further assistance, please reach out to AOC Support Dept. Good idea but doesn't work with Win10
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wish it was compatible with my Lenovo Thinkpad but sadly no. Here's the real issue. I bought two items online (cartridge and this monitor) was promised delivery next day or two and only one made it. Added another $25 to get it moved to next day so that was money thrown right in the trash. Next, and this really got me upset, shopping online I put a laser cartridge in my cart and then this monitor. Obviously I needed to return the monitor. Looked real simple. Go BB!! Wrong, their online return only recognizes that you want to return only the FIRST item you put in your cart! Even their online "help" couldn't understand. I gave up after about 30 minutes and just drove to my local BB to physically return it. So, buying online, smooth transaction, smooth delivery and smooth return? Yes, okay, No & No! From now on I will make one transaction per item and I really believe they owe me the $25 I shelled out for "quicker" delivery but somehow I don't think that's going to happen.

Not completely compatible with all Windows/ comput
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was happy with the monitor when I tested it on my personal computer with Windows 11. As soon as I connected it to my only 2 year old work computer what I needed it for, it didn't work. Should offer USB and HDMI option. Even after I installed the driver's it wouldn't work. Perhaps it doesn't work with Windows Enterprise... Very unfortunate as I was looking at using it.

Good when drivers are up to snuff
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Monitor itself is fine- does the job not the highest resolution and you kind of have to deal with it as-is. The biggest annoyance I find is trying to get it work on my windows 10 hp laptop. I had it running- installed a driver from some link but took me a while to find that info online and figure it out from trial and error- had it working for 4 solid mos- no problems, but now my system updates seem to have caused the former driver to be outdated and i am once again on the hunt for the right download(s)... the AOC site download for this product isn't cutting it. The down time trying to find the right driver stinks! Would much prefer to plug and play. Not thrilled.

Not Easily compatable w. MAC
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not Easily compatible with Mac, I was looking for a quick plug & Play travel monitor but once connected out of the box it turned on and none of my screens or desktops would appear on this Monitor. Turns out I would need to download drivers but there wasn't any QR codes or instructions for that so I returned it. I was surprised when I opened the box to find a CD to download Drivers but I have not had a CD Drive on a Computer in 5-7 years..

Portable Monitor for the Field
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great monitor, it work on my older laptop and not my newer laptop. Perhaps i need to connect both USBs in order to provide power to the monitor. Or make connections in device manager. Still working on it. Otherwise, i like the monitor while im working in the field.

Does NOT work with MacBook Pro.
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this for use with my MacBook Pro, as it was advertised as fully compatible...well, it’s not. After 7 hours on the phone with AOC and Apple support, nothing worked and I returned it. I can’t speak to its functionality with a PC.

Good when it works
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got this monitor because I was travelling to a customer site for a week. The monitor worked great on my personal laptop but it didn't on my work laptop; it just didn't recognize the device. I tried looking online for driver to download but couldn't find it. I returned it because I didn't have the time to explore fixes.
