    hyper-real - and that's not a bad thing

Hyper-realistic CG - and by that, I mean realistic at times, and fanciful at times, but so good it makes you want to believe that it's real. After seeing the original Appleseed CG movie on DVD, seeing this on Blu-ray was literally an eye-opener. Whether it was the influence from John Woo or the improvement in technology since the original, this really was a phenomenal treat for the eyes. They weren't shooting for super-realistic CG ala James Cameron's Avatar, but more of a stylized, cel-shaded, "hyper-realistic" (should I TM it?) style that was enjoyable to watch. John Woo inserted his tradmark white doves and slow-mo/dual-gun/exaggerated action scenes, but overall it was a great movie that got away from the extraneous explanations of the first movie and really dove into some serious action, conflicts, and love. Highly recommended for any anime/action fans. NOTE - the Blu-ray defaults to English audio with no subtitles. Please fix that immediately by switching to Japanese audio and whatever subtitles you prefer.

    Gorgeous Graphics

Even if you're not a fan of anime this is well worth the money just for the opening 15 minutes. The CG is absolutely gorgeous and the camera angles on some of the sequences are awesome with it's Matrix style action. It's a far cry from the original Appleseed movie and the animation is so realistic at times it's almost hard to believe it's only anime. You can definately see the influences of John Woo (Hostage, Mission Impossible 2, Face Off, Stranglehold) in this movie and Shinji Aramaki did an incredible job directing this anime epic. All in all it's a great achievement in the world of CG and a visual treat that leaves you wanting to watch it all over again.

    Well done.

An excellent movie. The actions sequences are well done and John Woo's influence can be seen. The Visuals are stunning and there are many sequences that are photo realistic. The plot is compelling and the pacing is better than the first movie. I did have two small issues with the movie that fans might agree with. First is some of the conversations and one liners are a bit cheesy. The second and largest is that there is no continuation of the second movie into this movie. Neither of these things detracts from the movie. Anyone who has not seen the first movie can pick this up and not feel lost. Lastly I would recommend that parents of younger children (under 10?) watch this first before letting the kids watch. Most of the violence and done well there are a couple of scenes that might not be appropriate. Also the plot is complicated and younger children may not be able to follow.

    Worth taking a look at.

First off, I'm not to into anime. This was recommended to me by a friend so I decided it's worth taking a look at since it only costs me $15 (2 for $30 sale at Best Buy). Because I have no prior knowledge it kinda took me a while to figure out what's going on with the story since it supposedly picked up where the last one left off. After going through the movie a bit, you kinda start piecing things together. The thing that really does it for me though is the CGI animation on this movie. It's simply amazing at 1080p picture quality and the action sequences are simply amazing. For the price I paid, it was well worth adding this title to my Blu-ray collection.

    Excellent Anime

This title absolutely blew me away. Watching it in 1080p hi-def is a gorgeous visual experience. The story lacks the excessive convolutions and pretense that usually accompany anime 'masterpieces' and provides a well-paced, expertly directed odyssey into a vision of a darkly lined but optimistic high-tech future. John Woo's fingerprints are all over this one, as well. If you haven't seen the first two, this one may have a bit of a learning curve, but it's an excellent watch and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys stunning visuals with their fun stories. 3 thumbs up.

Some people compared this anime to the "Final Fantasy". I haven't seen it, but I'll tell you that - Ex Machina blew me away. It was produced with John Wu. Anything else you want to know? Oh, well - amazing CGI and nice heavy soundtrack complete the picture. And watch it on a decent screen and with good bassy sound, it'll add the pleasure. It can be also found in a steelbox edition.

Watching this film absolutely justifies my purchase of a Blu-ray player and my 1080p LCD. This story is no way memorable, but the quality of the animation alone is worth the price. Interesting bonus documentary about how they brought together Japanese anime directors and John Woo. Good documentary about Shiro Masamune and the origins of the Appleseed manga

The disc itself: Whether or not you like the visual style of the film is subjective, but regardless I was completely prepared to be blown away by some top quality CG. This did not happen. I'm not sure what specific problem with the video prevented this film from looking as good as it should have, but it simply fails to look as three dimensional and "alive" as recent Pixar releases. (In Appleseed's defense, the folks at Pixar have set the bar insanely high.) Add to that a pretty weak story and few special features and this release winds up being mediocre at best. The blu ray edition is easily the best version of this available, so if you're already a fan it's worth picking up. otherwise pass.

If you liked the Final Fantasy series you will love this. The animation is not as good as final fantasy but it is not bad.
