Featuring a combination of excellent audio quality with integrated voice assistant, Bose has crafted an incredible smart speaker that’s ready to get out of the home and provide the soundtrack to your life wherever you go. ~~Pros~~ +360 degree rich, lively, immersive audio. The audio is well balanced. There is even crispness and sparkle in the treble frequencies which is a pleasant surprise since Bose’s signature sound is known for its richness and warmth. The speaker spreads sound evenly in all directions with no dead spots. Placing it near the corner of walls allows the audio to reflect off the walls to create a wider spatial feel to the sound. The bass is powerful and punches deep. (For comparison, the bass competes well against my Sony XB41, and that is one bassy speaker.) Audio from this speaker can easily fill a mid size room with no distortion when turning up the volume. Not enough bass or treble? Feel free to adjust both the bass and the treble via the Bose Music app. You can go from -100 to +100 in increments of 10. Bose didn’t used to allow the user to custom adjust the Bose signature sound, figuring that the factory tuned audio quality was good enough for all types of music. How wrong that was. Some music genres benefit with more bass, others with less. And similarly, some can use more or less treble. Bose seems to now recognize this with the series of smart home audio products (e.g. bose 700 soundbar) that the company is introducing as of late with the ability to adjust both bass and treble. +Choice of Alexa or the Google assistant with the option to switch between the two whenever you feel like it. Some days you want to listen to Alexa’s voice and other days you might want to converse with the Google Assistant. At least now you can have two virtual friends to talk to, but you can’t get them to both work simultaneously. Simply switch between voice assistants in the Bose Music app. I think it’s great that Bose was able to get both assistants on a single smart speaker. Other smart speaker manufacturers only offer Alexa or Google Assistant, but not both. Kudos to Bose for allowing the option to switch. This obviously helps to increase sales. The microphones work well. Even with music playing loudly, the mics are able to pick up my voice from across the room to activate the voice assistant. +wifi audio streaming using pandora, iheart radio, amazon music, spotify, siriusXM, tune in, and deezer. Wifi streaming quality is superior to bluetooth. So whenever, wifi audio streaming is available, you should choose that option. +Wifi or bluetooth, its up to you. It’s a wifi and bluetooth speaker all in one. When you are away from wifi, simply connect and listen to music thru bluetooth. +Bose Music app - Easy to use and feature rich. Save preset stations, adjust bass and treble, group Bose’s smart home audio speakers, adjust volume, select one of the aforementioned wifi streaming services. You’ll need to install the Bose Music app and create an account to perform the initial set up for the speaker. +usb c charging. I list it as a pro, even though many devices today have already shifted to the usb c charging as a standard. The Bose portable home speaker isn’t perfect by any means though. Some wonderful features from the good ole dumb bluetooth speaker days didn’t make the cut into the latest modern smart speaker devices. These notable omissions as well as other things are listed here as Cons. ~~Cons~~ -The Bose portable home speaker does not come with the charging cradle which allows you to simply place the speaker on top of it without having to plug it in to charge. It is available to purchase separately for another $30. For the price Bose is charging for the speaker, you would think they could throw in the charging cradle. -The 3.5mm audio jack has gone the way of the dodo bird. Bose has simply done away with it. Most of us probably wouldn’t use it anymore, but it would have been nice to include just for completeness sake so you can tell this generation of youth that in the old days (errr..last year) you had to use a wire to connect to audio devices. -No speakerphone ability. It’s a smart home speaker, but not smart enough to allow you to use it as a speakerphone. It has sophisticated microphones that pick up your voice from across a room only to allow you to speak commands to your voice assistant, but not speak with a real person. Go figure. For this reason, I can’t part with my Bose Soundlink Mini II which, even though it is a dumb speaker, is smart enough to allow me to use it as a speakerphone. -Portable is relative. Sure this Bose smart speaker is portable, but it’s bigger and heftier than, say the Bose Revolve Plus, Bose Revolve, or my favorite Bose Soundlink Mini II. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of owning or using the Bose Soundlink Mini I or II, you will know how compact and low profile the speaker is. It’s always advertised with a photo of the speaker sitting on the palm of your hand. That is a portable speaker that I can easily throw into a bag. Not so much with the Bose portable home speaker. It is portable, but you’ll need a bigger bag. -You can take it out of the home, but it’s not as rugged as other portable bluetooth speakers. The Bose portable home speaker shares the same cylindrical lantern design as the Bose Revolve speakers, but those have rubber bumpers at the top and bottom of the speakers to protect them during an impact. Bose clearly designed the portable home speaker to have a more aesthetic appeal to blend with indoor furnishing rather than for the outdoor ruggedness. With an IPx4 rating, the Bose portable home speaker is water resistant, meaning it can withstand splashes of water, but can’t be submerged like other portable speakers rated with IPx7 waterproof ratings. Here are some other observations: *You can only use the voice assistant as long as the speaker is connected through wifi. The voice controls will not work when you’re no longer within wifi range. *For the occasions when you don’t want Amazon or Google listening to your conversation, you can simply turn off the microphone by pushing the mic on/off button at the top of the speaker. *Although they look physically similar, the Bose portable home speaker does not have a tripod mount like the Bose Revolve speakers. *It takes approximately 4 hrs to fully recharge the battery. Bose states the speaker can play up to 12 hrs. I was using the speaker at 50% volume and it has lasted well over 12 hrs. ~~Should you buy it?~~ This is one of those products where I would not hesitate recommending. The cons I listed are minor niggles that should not discourage you from putting the Bose portable home speaker at the top of your list to audition. Although it is on the pricier side, Bose has engineered an outstanding speaker with superb audio qualities that will bring a smile to your face when you listen to it.

A True Masterpiece Smart Speaker by Bose

This Bose Portable Speaker is the only device I have tested that contains ALL competing smart speaker technologies: Amazon Alexa, Google Home & Apple AirPlay 2. You cannot call either name and have the speaker respond, as I thought it would, however. You choose which you want to use and set up the speaker that way. For this test, I chose Amazon Alexa because I prefer the Amazon Unlimited Music with HD Sound. This is one of the best looking smart speakers; I chose 2-tone white on top / luxurious silver on the bottom. Triple Black is also available It is a very attractive package & is shaped the same as the older Bose Portable Speaker that did not contain any smart speaker built-in. The speaker weighs 2.4# & measures 7.5" high X 4" diameter. The speaker is water resistant; it includes a built-in tilting carry handle. Setup was fairly typical of Smart Speakers: You need the App for the smart speaker you choose & the Bose Portable Speaker App. I attempted to set it up without reading instructions; the set-up failed. I went back & read the instructions. My error was trying to connect the Bluetooth FIRST. You must connect to your local WI-FI FIRST. This was a very easy change & it set up instantly. Once set up, it never dropped out; The connectivity is excellent. I have several branded Alexa Smart Speakers made by Marshall & by Ultimate Ears. Both brands offer premium quality sound with "barely Alexa" functionality; you must YELL at either speaker & they cannot hear over their own music if the volume is turned up. I feared this Bose would suffer the same drawback. Was I pleasantly surprised!! This Bose Portable Speaker listens & responds faithfully nearly indistinguishable from an Amazon Echo. The onboard microphones pick up the sound from a whisper to regular voice with the music jamming! The BOSE sound quality is spectacular! It features crystal clear audio up to one notch from the highest volume. At the very highest volume, it did not distort; it simply sounded better one notch back. It sounds far superior to the Amazon Echo speakers available today. A USB C cable with power supply is included for charging. There is a round contact below the base, designed to sit on a custom designed BOSE charging base. That is a Must Have accessory & for $349.99 it would have been a welcome & valuable item to BOSE to include with the smart speaker. BOSE claims 12 Hours battery life. I charged my speaker 100%, then set mine up in the bathroom & jammed there a couple of times. The next morning it was flashing the low battery LED, so I now leave it plugged in unless it is time to carry it outdoors. Then simply unplug it & go! The LED's on the top are very well placed & circle in white when Alexa is responding to you. They also show the volume setting when you request it plus the battery low indicator. Various colors show different functions. Equalization is easily adjustable from the BOSE app; select the exact bass & high frequencies to suit your personal taste. The soft touch buttons on the top (Power On / Off with status LED, Volume Up / Down, Play / Pause, Microphone Mute) are easy to see & work flawlessly. CONCLUSION: Bose designed a beautiful Masterpiece for which they should be proud. I am proud to show it to all of my guests & when they hear the sound, every one has been highly impressed. This Smart Speaker earns my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Great sound and portability in a smart speaker

Bose continues to design and pump out speakers with great sound with the Bose Portable Home Speaker with Amazon Alexa and Google voice assistants built in. The design is similar to their recent years’ portable models with the vase shaped, non-directional circular sound design with upward facing microphones around the top bezel for the voice assistants to capture you no matter what side of the speaker you’re on. This is a great design for indoor and outdoor use since you don’t have to aim it in just one direction and I’m surprised more portable speakers don’t go this route. I also think it’s great that they opted for both Amazon and Google voice assistant options so you don’t have to choose between what your preference is and you can switch without having to shop for another speaker. And if you don’t prefer the voice assistant options, you can always use the bluetooth feature to connect your smart device however there is no auxiliary input for those “old school” wired devices. It uses a USB-C cable to charge the device or you can opt for the charging cradle, not included. I prefer the voice assistant to listen through my synced music app or stream internet radio. It can also be used as a speaker phone when connected to your smartphone. It was fairly simple to set up and link your preferred voice assistant through the smart device application which you can use to also adjust the bass and treble, check battery life, control the volume, set/use preset stations and more. You can set the speaker to remain on, in standby mode for voice assistant use or turn off which all affect battery life accordingly. The sound is impressive, as you would expect from Bose, and I found myself not needing to turn it up more than half way even when using in a large area outside. The small handle on top is convenient for toting around from place to place, the speaker is small and light enough to not be a burden and the sound is big enough to fill a few rooms or outdoor area. All that being said, I would recommend this Bose speaker to anyone in the market for a portable smart speaker.

Bought as open box excelente. It looks like it was used for a year por more, but with a heavy use. Just a waste of time and money for bestbuy because I'll be returning this asap. I would not pay $50 for this. They sold it close to $300. I'm not sure how they determined that the condition is excellent. Lol

    Great Speaker from Bose

Out of the box performance is great. I had to do minor tweaking on my end to get a superb sound, and now it’s awesome. It has all the signatures of Bose quality and I’m pleased with their product. In the short few days I had this, I received notice of a firmware update. It was a rather quick update, might have taken about 10 minutes. I don’t have many cons about this product. There are only 3 dings that come to mind. Two have to do with the downloadable app and the third is the actual speaker. Some people might call it unfair, but it’s the truth. My first ding is adjusting the volume within the app while connected via Bluetooth. For some reason while in the app, when I make adjustments to the volume, it gets really loud and then quite. I have no idea why this happens, but it’s every time I adjust the volume. I’m curious to see if anyone else is experiencing that too. Even if the volume is low and I want to make it louder, it spikes and then goes down. I’m guessing this will be a simple firmware update. My second is with the battery life. I’ve seen better battery life from portable speakers, so I’m a bit disappointed but overall it doesn’t ruin my experience. I believe the product description says about 12 hours of consecutive play. So far I tested 3 consecutive hours and the battery dipped to about 65%, so I’d agree with their 12-hour claim. Again, this isn’t a major concern just a minor inconvenience for those on the go. My third issue is that you can’t turn it on and off within the app. I know it’s petty, but what’s the point of having a portable speaker and app if you can’t power it on or off within the app? Chalk it up to laziness. This in no way is a deal breaker, just my opinion. I know standby mode allows me to turn this on and off, but standby mode drains the battery. Pros: Easy Setup! Great Sound Durable Long Charge Cord Ability to make sound adjustments Alexa Voice Control Google Assistant WIFI connection Smart Speaker Setup so people on my WIFI can play a song Cons: Battery Life is only about 12 hours Can’t turn on and off within app Price Not a speakerphone Not fully waterproof Overall I’m very pleased with this speaker system. I do feel it’s a bit pricey compared to some of the competition, but the sound quality will definitely impress you. It’s a relatively new product, so I’m confident they’ll be able to work out the kinks. If they can make a few minor adjustments within the app, this can be truly perfect. I’m not fully confident I’d recommend this product to friends and family. Although the Bose name is really impressive and the sound is great, there are some minor things that prevent me from doing so. If you don’t mind spending over $350 on a portable speaker, then definitely look at this product.

Bose Portable Home (Smart) Speaker vs Sonos Move

    |
    |
Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed.
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have both the Bose Portable Home Smart Speaker and the Sonos Move. If all I wanted was a portable speaker I certainly could’ve spent less and gone with a bluetooth-only model, but I like the ability to have a portable speaker that is used primarily at home where I can easily connect from my iPhone/iPad using Wi-Fi and AirPlay 2. So between just the two? I like the aforementioned Bose slightly more than the Sonos. But just slightly. Portability/Charging… The Bose is smaller, lighter and just much more pleasant to carry around than the Sonos. Additionally, for convenience, should I ever take these speakers traveling, the Bose so far has accepted all the old USB-C chargers I’ve got sitting around. However, the Sonos despite also having a USB-C charging port, is apparently pickier about which chargers it will work with because none of my USB-C chargers will charge the Sonos. Speaking of charging, though, I highly recommend getting Bose’s optional charging base. Prior to buying that I was always running out of power despite me thinking I had turned the speaker off. At the new higher MSRP that Bose charges for this speaker nowadays it’s too bad it isn’t just included in the box. As for sound quality… At quieter to moderate volume levels I slightly prefer the sound of the Bose. At louder volumes my preference shifts slightly toward the Sonos. I tend to listen at lower volumes, and as such I appreciate the Bose’s sound signature because its treble is easier to hear at lower volumes than it is on the Sonos, in my opinion. I think the Sonos Move’s treble is somewhat dull in comparison—more so at quieter volumes, less so at higher volumes. (Note: For additional comparison, I also own a couple Sonos One’s and a Sonos Five; those speakers also have more detailed treble than the Sonos Move, in my opinion, despite adjusting the EQ up a tad.) My slight preference for the Bose Portable aside, I’ll admit that the sound is clearly colored and has a little bit of what I guess is the, ahem, “Bose sound” whether good or bad. It’s pleasant enough, but listeners with a trained ear for Hi-Fi probably think it’s bad. Bass fanatics might initially be pleased with the Bose, but in a direct comparison across quite a number of different songs it becomes apparent that the much larger and heavier Sonos Move is capable of a bigger bass sound. The actual frequencies it plays may not be a whole lot deeper than what the Bose can do, but the Sonos presents them in such a way that bass is much more apparent and room filling, though, still not room shaking. At similarly moderate to “loud-ish” volumes the Sonos’ bass almost makes the Bose sound hollow, which I maybe wouldn’t have noticed without a direct comparison between the two. Apps/Music Services… Something that knocks down the score of the Bose Portable is its app and its lack of compatible music services, even managing to miss some major ones. This isn’t a big deal if you’re using AirPlay 2 or Bluetooth exclusively, but it’s a pretty big deal if you need to use the app. The Bose Music app also disappointingly only works in a portrait position and not in a landscape position, despite being an official iPad app (as opposed to just an iPhone app). The Sonos app is better as it has practically every music service available and works in landscape mode on an iPad. Voice Assistants/Music Services, again… As for the built-in voice assistants, I’ve not used them on either speaker. But from my understanding both the Bose and Sonos are more limited in what music services they are compatible with via voice commands than what say a Google Nest Mini is capable of. As such, just because you can set a particular music service as the default in your Google Home app, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can actually use that service with your Bose Portable or Sonos Move via Google Assistant voice commands. Apparently not all Google Assistant capable speakers are equal when it comes to functionality. That said, from what I’ve read the Sonos apparently is compatible with more music services when using voice assistants than the Bose is. Conclusion: As I mentioned in the beginning, I have a slight preference toward the Bose Portable Home Smart Speaker. But if the treble in the Sonos Move could’ve been a tad brighter, like say, if the Sonos Move had the exact same treble and detail as the Sonos One or Sonos Five, then I would’ve easily preferred the Sonos Move over the Bose Portable despite it being heavier and otherwise less suited to travel. As it stands, neither speaker is perfect (especially at these price points) and they each have pros and cons. And I certainly wouldn’t fault anyone for getting the Sonos. After all, most reviews on the Internet seem to indicate the Sonos is actually the speaker with the better sound quality and since it includes a charging bass it might actually be the better value now. ***Note: From what I can tell, at some point Bose decided to rename this product from the “Bose Portable Home Speaker with Voice Assistants” to the simplified “Bose Portable Smart Speaker”. Best Buy seems to think they’re the same product according to my purchase history. I, too, think its the same identical speaker, fwiw.***

I was looking for a great sounding portable speaker and the Bose PSS has been exactly what I was looking for. So far it's been flawless using AirPlay through WiFi or with Bluetooth. The sound quality is incredible and I'm hearing things in songs that I didn't with my previous Apple HomePod. The clarity, bass, and volume are exactly what I was looking for. The Bose Music app is a great addition with all of its features. I especially like the treble and bass adjustment, the custom radio presets and other misc. settings. I sometimes pair it with my Bose 500 and together they can really fill a room and sound amazing. I purchased the Bose charging cradle also because it's so much easier to just grab the speaker and take it with you to another room, but I do think that it should have been included with the speaker for the price. Overall, the Bose PSS was well worth the money for me.

Out of the box, it needed a charge as it was under 50%. Once it had a full charge, started setup, took about 5 mins as our family already has the Bose App setup and other products. The longest part was a minor update to the unit to align with “Ok Google”. We did test with Alex and enjoy both as they both are very informative and provide lots of updates on items you’d normally track via mail or email, calendar, etc…If you have either, then you know what it’s like. The good stuff, box has two pull tabs to open, inside you will find the speaker (obvious), USB-C:C charging cable, Bose branded power adapter aligned with speaker color, and a quick setup guide. Note just toss the guide to side as it directs you to download and install the BOSE app through your MobileOS provider (AndroidGoogle Play; AppleApp Store). Then create an account if you do not have one. The speaker does have this little handle; cute shall we say. As a word of caution, during the initial boot/turn-on, there is an intro sound that is played. If you have a little ones sleeping go to another room as far away as you can because it did get a little on the loud side. The setup, it’s a little tricky if you do not have any BOSE products, a little easier if adding. The method has gotten clearer though on how to setup their units and the biggest thing to note is connect to your WiFi (your home network)...DO NOT SKIP THIS…as the speaker needs it’s latest updates to work properly with the BOSE app. There’s no need to setup Bluetooth (BT) until after you’ve connected it to your WiFi and set the speaker up. The Bluetooth is there for when you’re not on your normal network and if you’re out and about…not just for home use. The range is great on these for WiFi/BT. The sound. For such a small little unit, it packs a lot of sound class. Typical with Bose products and is very clean and clear. I was actually confused at one point in my home during the test thing it was coming from my main unit when it was the speaker. If this says anything. I’d definitely recommend this for music goers whether it’s in home or outside for parties, wineries, BBQs, camping (maybe see some bears gettin’ jiggy with it), etc…Best of luck with your new toy and hope you enjoy this thing as much as I did.

Sound quality is amazing. I have this hooked up to 900 Soundbar and it’s great! If you are in an area of 1000 square feet or less this is all you will need to satisfy those loud lip syncing session. Bass is great, sound is clear and battery life is like 8 hours +. Only complaint is that if add it to your soundbar and try to watch a movie with this speaker attached it will have a delay. Not with music but only with movies.

I love these "pails"! We have 2 of them and got my brother-in-law one as a gift. Setup of this and all of the Bose speakers I bought has been finicky at best. Sometimes the speakers won't group, sometimes show as unavailable. But when they work, it's really great. And of course, it sounds like Bose...which I have been a fan for years. dating back to the old Lifestyle systems (which I still have 2 of them that sound great after 10+ years). it's amazing how good they sound given their size. I carry it around the house or out into the yard. I also bought the charging cradle to make it easy to just plop it down and let it charge. Love these!

Great portable speaker and has good sound to be so small. It’s a little expensive but has good technology (Alexa, Air Pay, Group Play) and pretty decent battery life. It’s well designed and looks sleek sitting on the counter when not in use. I’d recommend for outdoor gatherings or small apartments. It’s loud enough to definitely annoy neighbors.

I love this speaker! This sound is crisp and clear, even at high levels. It's a little pricey but, considering that the Bose Revolve+ goes for $299, paying $50 more to have wifi, Alexa and, to have access to mostly all of your favorite music outlets (Pandora, Amazon Music, SiriusXM), it's well worth the price. I say go for it and happy listening!

The unit works great. Being partially handicapped, it’s nice to take my music anywhere in my home from room to room. Including the shower since it’s water resistant but not water proof. My pet peeves are well known to Bose. I really wish there were preset buttons built on the unit. There’s plenty of room for them. Not a fan of yet another app I have to download and use when I already own sound touch AND Bose connect speakers. The fact that I have to open the app to change stations or make any kind of adjustment is tedious. Every time I have to refer to the app I feel like I may as well use it as a Bluetooth speaker. But if you’re a long time Bose lover like me, buy it. The sound is incredible. And now that I can control the bass, it makes it even better using it at night when things quiet down. Haven’t used the voice controls due to privacy concerns but I’m sure it adds another layer of options. It does remind me of an oversized broadcaster’s microphone. Brings back memories.

The sound quality meets, if not exceeds, The high expectation we’ve come to expect from Bose. The portability is also great in that it can get dirty and damp but cleans up great without any negative effects from enduring splashes from poolside use. The flexible handle is comfortable and sturdy. And the battery life is impressive. I’ve run the speaker through a night’s sleep and it’s still going strong when I wake and take it into the bathroom to shower. The big fail: the buttons on top are indistinguishable and should have raised, identifiable blisters for finger recognition at a minimum. But for a quality product from Bose, I would have expected the buttons to light up for easy identification. In a dimly-lit room or at dusk I have to use the flashlight on my phone to use the speaker. For this reason alone the speaker gets the 4-star rating.
