Bose Hits the Sonic Sweet Spot
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’ve been using my trusty Bose Soundlink Mini II since 2015. I’ve always enjoyed the sound from this speaker, but lately I’ve been itching to see what else is out there. When I heard that Bose released the Soundlink Revolve+ II, I simply had to give it a shot. Here are the things I thought Bose got right with the Revolve+ II: +Sound Quality in a small package - Bose continues to deliver on precision audio quality, delivering big sounds from small devices. The 360 degree sound radiating from the speaker is nothing short of awesome. Place it next to the corner of a room, and the audio sounds more spatial, adding more dimension, and fullness. The speaker is well balanced across the audio spectrum. Bass thumps are powerful without being obtrusively overbearing. Mids are clear and prominent. Dialogue and voices have such clarity that when you’re listening to a program or podcast, it almost sounds like the person is present in the room with you. And what I enjoy most of all is the crispness and sparkle at the treble frequencies (which my mini II lacks). I think this speaker sounds so good that it can substitute as a soundbar for watching movies. I have tested the speaker with videos and the audio/video latency is minimal. So go ahead and use this speaker to watch your favorite movies. And all of this splendid audio is coming from a tapered cylinder that is only 7” tall, weighing only 2 lbs that you can easily carry in one hand with the rope handle. +Battery Life - Bose claims 17 hours of use on a fully charged battery. I don’t know how they tested the battery, but most of the time I don’t listen to music at full volume. I listen more at mid-volume. I’ve been going for over 20 hours, and there is still 30% battery left. Basically, battery life is excellent! +AUX jack - So many bluetooth speakers have eliminated the 3.5 mm aux jack. I am so glad Bose kept it for the Revolve+ II since I sometimes have the need to plug it into legacy audio equipment. +Tripod Mount - For those times when I’m outdoors doing gardening work and don’t have a stable surface to place my speaker and don’t want to place it on the grass or dirt, I can bring out my tripod and attach it to the receiving tripod mount on the bottom of the Revolve+ II. It takes the standard tripod screw mount. +Not a smart speaker - I have plenty of smart speakers in my home already. I don’t need another one listening in on all my private conversations. I’m glad this is a good ole bluetooth speaker. With that said, however, you can still use it with the voice assistant on your phone if you need it. The speaker’s microphone becomes an extension of the microphone on your phone. You’ll just need to press the multi-function button on the speaker to activate the assistant from your phone. Then you’ll be able to make or take calls, check the news and weather, play music, etc. +Speaker Phone - Audio quality is super clear using the speaker as a speaker phone. The speaker’s microphone works well, too. Callers on the other end of the line heard me clearly. While I love singing the praises of the Revolve+ II, I think Bose could have done some things better: -This speaker is still using the Micro-USB port to charge the battery. I don’t know why Bose doesn’t switch to the USB-c charge port, other than to save a few cents in using the older usb standard. -The Bose Connect app is okay, but could be better. You can control voice prompts, check the battery meter, add another speaker for party/stereo, change the name of the speaker, connect to a new bluetooth source, set an auto timer to turn off the speaker, and of course update the firmware. What this app lacks is treble/bass controls or equalizers. As much as I enjoy Bose’s signature sound, there are times when I might want to turn up or down the bass/treble to suit the specific audio I am listening to. If Bose could add this feature in a future firmware update, then this app would be super useful! -Powering off the speaker doesn’t really power it down. You would think that if you pressed the power button on the speaker to turn it off, the speaker would power down completely, right? Well, it doesn’t power it down completely. The speaker’s bluetooth antenna still draws power continuously, draining the battery. Someone at Bose thought it would be a good idea to include a feature where the speaker can be turned on directly from the Bose Connect app. So if your speaker is in the off position, you can simply turn it on from the app. I personally do not like this feature because it continues to draw power and deplete the battery. That means you could have the speaker turned off for a few weeks, and when you turn it on, you may find out that there is not much battery charge remaining. I would recommend that Bose provide a firmware update to allow the user an option to decide whether or not to have the speaker power up from the app. -IP55 - The first digit describes the resistance to intrusion from solids such as dust, while the second digit is for resistance to intrusion from liquids. The Revolve+ II can be sprayed with a low pressure water jet, but don’t submerge it in water, otherwise this expensive speaker is toast. There are a number of bluetooth speakers on the market that have a higher IP rating allowing them to be submerged in water. If being able to take your speaker to the pool party and dunk it in water is important to you, then this speaker isn’t for you. -Lower bumper quality is questionable. On my Revolve+ II, the top protective bumper appears to be made of a high quality rubber material that can take some abuse. However, the lower bumper doesn’t feel as thick as the rubber material at the top of the speaker. It appears to be hard plastic and lacks the resiliency of the top bumper. In fact, there are already a few light permanent scratches on the lower bumper of my speaker, and it hasn’t even been taken outdoors yet. Take a look at the picture I took showing the scratches. Should you buy the speaker? This speaker is expensive, but the audio quality is superb! I would recommend the speaker based on audio quality alone. Since audio is highly subjective and based on individual experiences, I would recommend that you audition the Revolve+ II with other speakers. Other than audio quality, this speaker does not compete well with other more rugged speakers from competitors that could survive being submerged in water.

Not worth the hassle.
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I recently got the Revolve+ II less than a week ago and boy, I should've saved my money. This whole speaker is a huge disappointment from start to finish. When I first bought it, I was happy to have another Bose portable speaker. My first one I had was far ahead of its time, so I was excited to get my hands on a new model 12 years later. Initially, I enjoyed it but that was pure brand blindness. I was so blinded by it being a Bose, that I didn't realize how bad it was until I really started taking a closer look at it. To start off, I was expecting for this speaker to work in the Bose App as every other product I own from Bose does. It does not. Wasn't too upset about this initially, but when I wanted to I customize my sound and add more bass, that's when I missed it. Which leads me to my next point, it has virtually no bass at all. Normally this wouldn't be a problem if I could adjust a setting to add more but nope, can't do that. Moving past the lackluster bass, the sound doesn't have that Bose touch that's become a sort of midas touch, if you will. When I think Bose, I think crisp and clear audio balanced and engineered perfectly. While it still sounds nice, it's not "Bose nice." Before this, I had a JBL Charge 4 and it doesn't blow the Revolve+ II out of the water, but it is better; if nothing else the fact that it actually has nice bass puts it above the Revolve+ II. In my mind, there's no reason why I should even be comparing JBL to Bose. So just as I'm thinking that it was time to say goodbye to the Revolve+ II I think, "Wait! I can use it to group up with my Smart Speaker 500! That'll be cool!" And it was! You can actually kinda customize the group sounds in the app and how loud each speaker is individually. However, grouping them up that one time was the worst mistake I made and it's the reason I'll be returning my Revolve + II. Every. Single. Time. I turn the Revolve on, it automatically groups up with my Smart Speaker 500. The best part is, there's no way to un-group them in the app. So I have to go into the app and un-group them every time I power my speaker on. To be fair, there are a couple things this speaker does well. Pros: -speaker and phone connection is instantaneous when powered on. -the buttons are inside crevices and there are raised indentations on one of the buttons, that really helps in the dark. -they included a handle. This makes it much easier to carry. -the handle isn't a hard rigid material, it's like a stiff mesh rope. I didn't think I'd like it but they do it well. -the speaker can get really loud if you want it to. -it has an auxiliary port, a rare find these days. -being able to group it with another Bose is cool for the first time you use it. However it's shortcomings far outweigh its strengths. -very user unfriendly (no app control, and contestant grouping to another speaker every time it's turned on) -sound quality is decent but definitely not up to par with the Bose brand, in my opinion. -no decent bass, borderline none at all. -the top of the speaker's material feels cheap. I get that it's supposed to withstand impact better, but that kinda leads me to my next point... -it's easy to tip over. The way it's designed causes it to be top heavy. They've done their best with weighing down the bottom, but it's still easy to accidentally tip it over. Which leads me to my next point... -it's a relatively heavy speaker. I mean it's not gonna weigh you down if you pack it up in a bag of some sort but I wouldn't feel comfortable carrying it by hand without using the handle. - I personally am not a fan of the design. The whole 360° sound thing seems like more of a gimmick than a selling point. In my opinion, it causes some of the sound clarity and crispness to be lost. -it still uses a micro-USB rather than a type C. I know this one is more subjective but I feel like when I pay for a Bose, I should get cutting edge technology. Micro-USB is starting to fade out, so it feels old. -there's no kind of splash protection around the charging port or auxiliary port. I know that doesn't necessarily go with Bose's design style of sleek and smooth, but I feel like it'd be a nice touch. I can't speak for everyone but I like to use my Bluetooth speakers for when I shower. It doesn't put my mind at ease knowing there's no type of water guard on the charging port. I know better than to actually put it in the shower with me but with all that steam in the air, over time that may cause problems that'll occur coincidentally just outside the warranty dates. Relatively minor thing, but that's what I pay a premium for: the minor things. -my final and biggest complaint is that it's overpriced. This doesn't feel like a Bose product, but my wallet definitely felt it. Why would I spend $350 on a speaker when it has this many shortcomings? That was one of my complaints with the Smart Speaker 500, was that I felt like I was paying for a name. It was worth it for the Smart Speaker 500, but it's not even close for the Revolve+ II. I can get better sound and better element protection from a $150 speaker over this $350 speaker. In conclusion, if you're reading this, just don't buy it. Save yourself the time and money and go get something else, you'll thank me later. However, I am going to give Bose another shot at redemption. I'll be promptly returning this and getting the Portable Smart Speaker for about $80 more. I'll be sure to review that as well.

Great sound all around
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m a big fan of Bluetooth speakers. They allow us to bring room-filling sound with us wherever we go, unencumbered by wires or the need for an electrical outlet. I’m also a big fan of Bose products, and they’ve been filling my life with music for over 30 years now. I’ve been using one of the small portable Bluetooth speakers for a while now (unfortunately, not a Bose), but I wanted something with bigger sound, which is why I got the Revolve+. This is the second iteration of the Revolve+, but I do not have the first, so I can’t compare. My understanding is that the water resistance is improved, and they’ve added an option to purchase a charging dock (this is not included in the box). I like the idea of being able to have this speaker by the pool and not have to worry about it getting splashed, so improving water and dust resistance is a good thing. Pros: • Does a good job of reproducing tones across the spectrum, with clean, clear highs, solid mid-range, and full, rich bass. While not a lot bigger than my other Bluetooth speaker, the Revolve+ II puts out much fuller sound, with bass that isn’t muddy or unclear. That’s maybe the best feature of the Revolve+: it hits the sweet spot between too much and too little bass. The sound remains good throughout the full range of loudness, and doesn’t distort even at maximum volume. • Nice rubber on the top and bottom, providing drop protection and making it easy to hold, even when wet. • Easy to pair with Bluetooth devices, but still includes a 3.5 mm input jack. Nice touch! • Bose thoughtfully included a screw-mount for attaching the Revolve+ II to a tripod. This could be handy at a party. • Built-in handle is sturdy and comfortable. This is meant to be taken with you! • Sounds great in all directions, not just the spot directly in front of the speaker. Putting it close to a wall enhances the sound even more. • Great battery life. • Call quality using the built-in microphone is better than expected. Cons: • The Bose Connect app. I’m not sure this is really a con, but it’s not a plus, so I’ll list it here. The app is used for delivering firmware updates (VERY slowly) and managing connections and setting up party mode, but not much beyond that. In addition, Bose is following the path of many other manufacturers by requiring separate apps depending upon whether you have a Bluetooth speaker, headphones, or other equipment. I currently have Bose headphones, Bose Frames, and now the portable speaker. Why can’t I control all aspects of these devices in a single app? It's a minor point, but one I thought I’d mention. • No ability to change and save EQ settings. • Could be a little louder. • A little expensive. It’s a wonderful speaker, but it would be even better at a good sale price. • Still using micro USB to charge. Why are they still doing this? The Bose NC700 headphones use USB-C, as should this speaker. Not a deal-breaker, but disappointing nonetheless. The Bose Revolve+ II portable Bluetooth speaker sounds better than any other that I’ve owned. The quality is top-notch, without any visible seams in the aluminum casing. It looks and sounds great! Well built, rugged and water/dust resistant, this speaker is designed to go where you go. I’m very happy to have this one.

Is Bose just riding on its name?
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Maybe 3 1/2 stars. I have mixed feelings on the Bose revolve+2 speaker. First off, it does sound amazing! From low volumes - all the way up to more than fill the room, it is well balanced. It could just be me, but when I had it hooked up to my TV, it seemed to lower the bass so you could hear the dialog much better. I actually liked that. It connects thru bluetooth very easily. However I prefer the way my old bose bluetooth works, volume wise. The volume on the speaker was independent from the phone media volume. (you could have the phone volume at the level you like then change the speaker by itself.) Now it's linked together. ( changing the speakers volume moves it on the phone too.) The battery life claimed on the Revolve+ is 17 hours. I listened to it at a comfortable level, 30-50%, and got 27 hours before it needed a recharge! Amazing! It does however take 4 hours to recharge. That's the next downfall. While it's nice that the charging cable isn't proprietary anymore, it's micro USB. Come on Bose, how about USB C? It is 2021 after all. Also it would have been great to have wireless charging built in( my wireless earbuds - being much cheaper - have both) , or at least include the charging dock like you used to. (a $30 add on) Using voice commands is hit and miss, nice when it works. (only when connected to actual smart assistant on phone or smart speakers, one's not built into the Revolve) The voice included when you connect, that tells battery life and connection, needs work. Sounds like an old version of "dragon naturally speaking", speaks out letters most the time. Wierd. A little info display on the top would be very nice. The app is pretty basic and does not even include an equalizer. The design of the speaker is nice. True 360 degree sound. It is very rugged and well built. The bumpers on the top and bottom, protect it from falls. Small falls, off the table, I didn't try chucking it across the room. Small splashes and a light rain are OK for the Revolve+2. The grill being open and the charging port and aux jack are uncovered, so don't put it too close to the pool. Being the second generation, there should be many more upgrades. One more claimed hour of battery life is all I could tell as the difference. Maybe offer more colors even. If you love bose and want a great sounding speaker, then get this. But I just don't think the value is there. If it had the USB C, wireless charging, built-in assistant, Travel bag, and other features - make it a premium speaker - it would be worth the $300 price tag.

Posted .Hello,
Thanks for leaving your first impressions of the SoundLink Revolve II. It's great to hear how you liked the sound quality, ease of connection and the battery life!
While our speakers feature active equalization to ensure the best performance in quality, we understand some users may wish to alter things further. The great thing about using a Bluetooth speaker like this is that you are not limited by the Bose Connect app if you wish to adjust EQ, you can do this from the source device settings or via EQs built directly into your favorite music service apps!
Kind regards,

More of the same always a good thing?
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Soundlink Revolve+ II is a good speaker. I'll get that out of the way immediately. However, as the second version of this speaker, there isn't much in the way of improvements over the original. Biggest oddity is a speaker released in 2021, from a top name company, is still using the now outdated micro-USB for charging. Hello? The Soundlink Revolve+ II has a rated battery life of 17 hours and carries a dirt/dust and waterproof rating of IP55. These are slight improvements over the original Revolve+. Other than that, not a lot appears to have changed. the speaker looks the same and is built of the same solid materials, with the same fabric covered handle. Sound wise this is a fairly balanced speaker, perhaps leaning a little to the bass end of the spectrum. It will get fairly loud for a relatively small speaker and the 360 degree sound is very smooth and even in all directions. A nice overall speaker for most any genre of music. So in the end the Soundlink Revolve+ is a good overall speaker and well built. There are nice voice prompts to let you know what is going on with the speaker and Bose has an app available for both Android and Apple. The price is at the high side of the ladder for a speaker of this size and it's strictly Bluetooth or wired use via the 3.5mm jack. No WiFi support on this unit. I would recommend this speaker, but I would have liked to see a truly new model rather than more of update that still uses micro-USB.
