We had a lease on a fancy copy machine that was ending. We were looking to replace it with an all-in-one printer that we could purchase. I was worried that we would be disappointed going from something so fancy, but we have not been disappointed in the least! Easy to set up wireless for 4 computers and great black & white and color copies! Just DON'T replace the toner when it first says it is low - I printed at least 200 black & white copies after I got the message!

My previous Brother color laser printer (not an all-in-one) was damaged in moving. As it happened, this new MFC L8850CDW adds the scanner and fax functions plus a vastly-improved control panel and, yay, happened to be on sale at Best Buy when I went looking for this model.
A month with the new unit has revealed no problems. Last night I printed 38 copies of an 8-page booklet (duplex, 4 pieces of paper in each booklet). The printer chugged through this in about 30 minutes, no jams, no overheating. The unit noticeably paused for the one page with color but was faster on the black-and-white pages. I've used 20 pound, 24 pound paper, and 24 pound glossy stock in it. The manual feed worked fine with card stock.
The scanner/copier page feed has been excellent. I reeeeally like one pass to scan both sides of a document. This is bound to produce fewer jams than rerouting each page to scan the second side, and I expect does not cost significantly differently. There was no perceptible skew with the sheet feed.
My only significant complaint so far is that no matter how carefully I place a page, the flatbed scanner skews more than I like. This corrects automatically in Adobe Acrobat OCR, which I would use anyway for its ClearScan cleanup. Acrobat also produced better OCR results than the software included with the printer. (Ha, Acrobat had better do well for what it costs.) I suppose experimenting and perhaps a piece of tape would let me compensate for this tiny skew. My old flatbed scanner offers higher resolution for handling photographs, but I rarely need that.
Tired of junk faxes at the office, I successfully tested sending & receiving fax but then unplugged that phone connection from the printer. It's available if I need it, and with nice reporting and re-send capabilities.
This all-in-one is bigger and heavier than competing units. I hope that's a sign of robust over-engineering. I put it on plywood on the floor under a work table. The scanning functions, print output, paper feeds, and controls are still quite accessible but I must be a little more careful of dust. This printer is quiet. Warm-up delay is minimal. Although this printer is on a different power circuit, not on the UPS, nevertheless as with my previous laser printers waking for a print job makes my UPS click and the lights dim a little.
It appears that the print cartridges have the same optical sensor as on my previous unit. I wish this sensor issued a one-time warning rather than refusing to print. Or just dispense with sensing; I am capable of judging print quality. With that older unit I got several more months of use from cartridges by putting opaque tape over the sensor.
Brother's new touch-screen interface is superb! I wish my big expensive office machines were as well-designed!
I use this Brother printer via a wired connection. Though beyond the printer's control, output from Mac OS X is slightly lighter than the same item printed from Windows, even for PDFs. The control apps differ between OS X & Windows but seem functionally equivalent. Printing from a Linux virtual machine worked fine.
So far I am pleased with this purchase.

It a top notch printer. Bit heavy to carry and may need 2 people especially since the box is big and tough for one person to grip. Installed in 2 mins and works great.
Had a b&w brother laser and this company makes it right. Previously tried Epson, HP and Xerox. IMO, this is the best bang for the buck. I would not spend 600$ on it, but its work 350-475$. If you get a sale on it, get it.

This is a very good laser printer. set up was easy and I have not had any driver issues like my HP's. Double sided scanning is the best.

I bought this printer as a gift to my husband. It's WiFi connected, so I can give command from my laptop wherever I am in my home and I get print. It made life so easy. Earlier for scan or photostat I used to ask my hubby to get from his office, now I can just insert a flash drive and get a scan. It's perfect for my art and craft hobbies also, this being a color printer I can get a print of idea, before putting effort in.

I am very pleased with this all in one color printer. I purchased it mainly because I needed a scanner that could duplex scan multi page documents. It does a great job and is nice and fast. I also prints well with a quick 1st page out.
I am very happy.
Other reviewers said that it was very large but I think it is normal for a color laser with all it's features.
They paper trays and doors are not as solid as a higher end business machine like a HP or Ricoh but as long as you don't abuse it, that shouldn't matter. and if that's what they had to do to keep the price down I am ok with that, because they didn't skimp on features.

This is a great printer for home / small business! Initial printer setup takes less than 20 minutes. Wireless configuration is straightforward. The faxing setup is really well done as well. I would highly recommend this printer to home and small business users.

This printer does everything we need in a small office. Very fast printing and scanning. Does duplex scanning. Easy to use. Toner is much more reasonably priced than HP and Dell.. I don't especially like the paper output area. It's in a little bit of a closed area, but that is a very minor issue. I would purchase Brother products again.

Print quality is very good, not quite photo quality, but Brother makes no such claims.Installation was a breeze on both Windows and Mac platforms. 500 pages printed thus far, no jams or issues. 2 sided printing has worked without an issue. It is big and heavy, benefits from its own stand, but similar in size to comparable units.

I must have checked out over 100 printers before deciding on the Brother MFC-L8850CDW, and I'm pretty sure I made the right choice. It prints great, scans well, and best of all I don't have to mess with ink cartridges anymore! I haven't tried the fax feature yet, and probably never will, so if you do a lot of faxing please check out a different review.
The pros: Quick and easy wireless setup, great print output, quick and quiet printing, fast scanning with great resolution.
The cons: Very heavy, and has a fairly large footprint. I have it set up on a hope chest in a spare bedroom which is great except for when my wife wants to get something out of the chest...
Without considering price, this is an excellent color laser all-in-one printer/scanner/fax machine. When you add price to the equation it's even more amazing.
If you need a wireless color laser all-in-one unit for home use, buy this one without hesitation.

Noisier, slow first copy, costs more than MFC9130CW

My 2 yr. old Brother MFC 9130CW wore out, so I spent several hours comparing printers for my 3 small businesses. This model has more features but the paper tray and duplex function are too noisy for a quiet office, the startup power consumption is higher dimming the lights briefly, and the first page print time is longer than my old printer. Otherwise, it meets my needs nicely, especially the intuitive touch screen menus.

It scans very well and fast into flash drive
I am still exploring scanning into e-mail, I have not figured it out yet.
Brother customer support is always handy when you call

I bought this as a replacement for my brother 9000 series printer that started printing very slowly. This printer has exceeded my expectations. I ship around 500 packages a month with packing slips, & I'm also an accountant. This has lasted through a tax season without 1 slow down or toner change.

Unfortunately, the particular one I received has developed a problem after about 30 days.I will be returning it soon for a replacement. After scanning about 100 pages in a row the Printer loses its wifi connection. It starts off ok, and scans sheet after sheet without hesitation but after about 50 sheets, it starts starting and stoping the scan, it starts and stops 3 times a page and then after 20 to 50 sheets more it gets stuck and does not scan any more sheets, it says scanning on the display but does not feed any more sheets, after 10 minutes of this, the computer says the printer cable was disconnected (mind you it is set up wirelessly). The problem is in the printer not the router or modem. Also the touch screen is not aligned correctly. If you touch directly on the icons it does not respond, but if you touch a half inch below the icons it accepts the touch.

The machine is great as advertised, it can handle all my needs. I give it 4 star because it’s sort of slow when printing paper even the b/w.
